Cardiac telocytes. From basic science to cardiac diseases. II. Acute myocardial infarction.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the scientific evidence regarding a potential role of telocytes in myocardial infarction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To this purpose, we performed a systematic review of relevant scientific literature, indexed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS: We found six articles containing relevant studies aimed at liking myocardial infarction and telocytes. The studies that were analysed in this review failed to show, beyond a reasonable doubt, that telocytes do actually have significant roles in myocardial regeneration aft

Protective role and mechanism of snakegourd peel against myocardial infarction in rats.

BACKGROUND: Injection of snakegourd peel (SP), an herb used in traditional Chinese medicine, is used to treat coronary artery disease and stable angina in China. However, its therapeutic role and mechanism of action for the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI) is not fully understood. PURPOSE: The present study was designed to investigate the effect of SP on MI-induced cardiac injury and elucidate its underlying molecular mechanisms. METHODS: To create an in vivo model of MI, we ligated the left coronary artery of Wistar rats. For our in vitro model of MI, we treated primary neonatal rat

MiR-1908 improves cardiac fibrosis after myocardial infarction by targeting TGF-β1.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role and mechanism of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-1908 in myocardial fibrosis after myocardial infarction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In in-vivo experiments, the rat model of myocardial infarction was established, and miR-1908 was up-regulated by lentivirus with miR-1908 overexpression. Cardiac function of rats was detected by echocardiography. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and Smad2/3 expressions in infarction border zone were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blotting. Masson staining was used to detect the f

Reg proteins direct accumulation of functionally distinct macrophage subsets after myocardial infarction.

AIMS: Myocardial infarction (MI) causes a massive increase of macrophages in the heart, which serve various non-redundant functions for cardiac repair. The identities of signals controlling recruitment of functionally distinct cardiac macrophages to sites of injury are only partially known. Previous work identified Regenerating islet-derived protein 3 beta (Reg3β) as a novel factor directing macrophages to sites of myocardial injury. Herein, we aim to characterize functionally distinct macrophage subsets and understand the impact of different members of the Reg protein family including Reg3β,

Precursor proadrenomedullin influences cardiomyocyte survival and local inflammation related to myocardial infarction.

Increased adrenomedullin (ADM) levels are associated with various cardiac diseases such as myocardial infarction (MI). ADM is cleaved off from the full-length precursor protein proadrenomedullin (ProADM) during its posttranslational processing. To date, no biological effect of ProADM is reported, while ADM infusion leads to antiapoptotic effects and improved cardiac function. Using an MI mouse model, we found an induction of ProADM gene as well as protein expression during the early phase of MI. This was accompanied by apoptosis and increasing inflammation, which substantially influence the po

Areas of Cartilaginous and Osseous Metaplasia After Experimental Myocardial Infarction in Rats.

The presence of hyaline cartilage has been previously documented in heart tissue of different vertebrates, ranging from birds to superior mammals. However, there is scarce published data regarding the appearance of focal deposits of hyaline-like cartilage within the hearts of laboratory rats. Few mechanisms that could trigger the appearance of this type of cartilage in heart were hypothesized (e.g., mechanical stress, ageing). Using different microscopy techniques this report confirms the presence of hyaline cartilage and bone in Wistar rats, which underwent left anterior coronary artery ligat

Ivabradine promotes angiogenesis and reduces cardiac hypertrophy in mice with myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the underlying mechanism of ivabradine (IVA) in promoting angiogenesis and reducing cardiac hypertrophy in mice with myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: Nineteen mice were randomly assigned into three groups as follows: sham group (10 ml/kg/day phosphate buffer saline (PBS), n=6), model group (MI and 10 ml/kg/day PBS, n=6) and IVA group (MI and 10 mg/kg/day IVA, n=7). All groups received an intragastric gavage for four weeks. Heart and body mass were measured. Cardiac function and heart rate were assessed by echocardiography and electrocardiography, respectively. Simultaneous Assessment of Cardiac Inflammation and Extracellular Matrix Remodeling after Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Optimal healing of the myocardium following myocardial infarction (MI) requires a suitable degree of inflammation and its timely resolution, together with a well-orchestrated deposition and degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. METHODS AND RESULTS: MI and SHAM-operated animals were imaged at 3,7,14 and 21 days with 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using a 19F/1H surface coil. Mice were injected with 19F-perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanoparticles to study inflammatory cell recruitment, and with a gadolinium-based elastin-binding contrast agent (Gd-ESMA) to evaluate elasti

[Foreign accent syndrome caused by the left precentral infarction-a case report].

A 57-year-old right-handed man was admitted to our hospital because of right facial paresis and acute-onset dysarthria. He presented with non-fluent aphasia. His aphasia gradually improved, but he started speaking with a strange accent and intonation from the fifth hospital day. He was diagnosed with foreign accent syndrome (FAS), which lasted for 2 months. MRI revealed ischemic infarction with edema in the superior, middle, and inferior parts of the left precentral gyrus. One year later, MRI revealed old, small infarct lesions in the left precentral gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and postcentra

Prognostic Value of Aortic Stiffness in Patients After ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: High aortic stiffness has been shown to be a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality in the general population and several patient cohorts. However, in patients after ST-elevation myocardial infarction, the prognostic value of high aortic stiffness is unknown so far. METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective observational study included 160 consecutive patients with first acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction. Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured 2 (interquartile range 2-4 days) days after infarction using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The primary end point was d

Ascending Spinal Cord Infarction Secondary to Recurrent Spinal Cord Cavernous Malformation Hemorrhage.

We report a case of a 58-year-old Hispanic man who developed ascending paraparesis over several weeks secondary to recurrent hemorrhages and resulting in spinal cord ischemia from a low thoracic spinal cord cavernous malformation. The patient's deterioration was attributed to recurrent hemorrhage of a thoracic intramedullary cavernous malformation at T11 resulting in vascular congestion and spinal cord ischemia. The patient was found to have a heterozygous mutation on exon 13 of gene KRIT1, which was consistent with autosomal dominant familial cerebral cavernous malformations. Expedited surgic

Suboccipital Decompressive Craniectomy for Cerebellar Infarction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suboccipital decompressive craniectomy (SDC) for cerebellar infarction has been traditionally performed with minimal high-quality evidence. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to investigate the impact of SDC on functional outcomes, mortality, and adverse events in patients with cerebellar infarcts. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Our primary outcome was the proportion of patients with moderate-severe disability after SDC. Secondary outco

Fibromuscular Dysplasia with Spontaneous Coronary Artery Disease Presenting as Acute Myocardial Infarction.

A 40-year-old female presented to a rural hospital with crushing substernal chest pain. An initial electrocardiogram showed ST elevation in lead II and aVF with elevated troponin I. She was immediately transferred to a tertiary care hospital. An emergent coronary angiogram did not show any significant coronary artery disease. On the second day, the patient experienced recurrence of severe chest pain with ST elevations in leads I, aVL, V5-V6, ST depressions in V1-V3, T-wave inversion over V2-V5. The troponin I level increased to > 40 ng/ml (normal 0.0 to 0.04 ng/ml). An emergent angiogram was p

Patient Outcomes and Cerebral Infarction after Ruptured Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm Treatment.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture and treatment is associated with high rates of dependency, which are more severe after clipping compared with coiling. To determine whether ischemic injury might account for these differences, we characterized cerebral infarction burden, infarction patterns, and patient outcomes after surgical or endovascular treatment of ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with ruptured anterior communicating artery aneurysms. Patient da

Punding following posterior cerebral artery infarction: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Punding is a complex stereotyped behavior, characterized by excessiveness, non-goal orientation, and repetitiveness. It is mostly associated with Parkinson's disease, and very few cases in non-Parkinson's disease have been reported. We report a case of punding associated with supratentorial ischemic stroke. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 70-year-old man with left posterior cerebral artery infarction with quetiapine-induced punding manifesting as repetitive unidirectional body turning. Remission of punding behavior ensued after cessation of quetiapine and administration of clona

Challenges in secondary prevention after acute myocardial infarction: A call for action.

Worldwide, each year more than 7 million people experience myocardial infarction, in which one-year mortality rates are now in the range of 10%, but vary with patient characteristics. The consequences are even more dramatic: among patients who survive, 20% suffer a second cardiovascular event in the first year and approximately 50% of major coronary events occur in those with a previous hospital discharge diagnosis of ischaemic heart disease. The people behind these numbers spur this call for action. Prevention after myocardial infarction is crucial to reduce risk and suffering. Evidence-based
