Health vulnerability and loneliness among adolescent and young adult populations: a comparison of generations based on a nationwide survey in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Using nationally representative data, we investigated differences in loneliness across generations in Japan, focusing on the unique factors affecting adolescents and young adults. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2022 and 2023 Basic Survey on Human Connection conducted by the Japanese Government. The dataset included responses from 22 361 individuals aged 16 years and older. Loneliness was assessed using the three-item University of California at Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS). Multiple linear regression models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, social and

Association between time to transfusion and outcomes in patients with traumatic haemorrhagic shock: an analysis of a nationwide trauma registry in Japan.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association of in-hospital time to transfusion on outcomes of patients with traumatic haemorrhagic shock. METHODS: Using data from the Japan Trauma Data Bank (January 2019-December 2023), we identified adult patients (aged ≥ 18 years) with haemorrhagic shock following trauma (systolic blood pressure < 90 mmHg; shock index ≥ 1.0 upon hospital arrival) and received ≥ 10 units red blood cells within 24 h of injury. We excluded patients transferred from or to other hospitals after emergency treatment, with burn injuries or cardiac arrest, without transfusion time recor

Environmental context related to hydrogen sulphide and regional variation in utilisation of ROCK inhibitors in Japan: a nationwide ecological analysis.

Regional variation in healthcare utilisation is widely documented, yet the contribution of natural environmental context to prescribing patterns remains poorly understood. Geological environments shape long-term background exposure to naturally occurring substances, but population-level evidence linking geological context to ophthalmic prescribing is limited. Experimental studies have suggested that hydrogen sulphide (H2S) may interact with the RhoA/Rho kinase (ROCK) signalling pathway, which is the pharmacological target of ROCK inhibitor medications used for glaucoma. We conducted a nationwi

Evaluation of Ease of Use for Pediatric Medications Requiring Decapsulation, Dissolution, or Partial Dosing: A Questionnaire-Based Study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Solid dosage forms such as fine granules, mini-tablets, and micropellets are gaining popularity worldwide because of their longer shelf lives, lower need for preservatives, and precise dosing compared to liquids. However, international pediatric formulations are often liquids or powders, and it is unclear whether these offer advantages over single-dose packaging, which is used in Japan, for caregiver management, preparation, administration, and cleanup. The acceptability of solid forms that require extra preparation, such as decapsulation, weighing dissolved powders, or taking part

Pediatric medication-related incidents in Japan: a nationwide observational study of severity and factors associated with severe patient harm.

UNLABELLED: Children are particularly vulnerable to medication-related harm. However, most previous research has focused on prescribing errors, leaving incidents occurring during downstream stages of the medication-use process insufficiently well characterized. We determined the epidemiology of pediatric medication-related incidents in Japan and examined factors associated with severe patient harm. This retrospective cross-sectional study analyzed nationwide incident reports from the Japan Council for Quality Health Care (JCQHC) Safe Master database involving patients aged 0 to 19 years report

Risk Factors for Colostomy after Chemoradiotherapy in Patients with Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Anus: A Nationwide, Multicenter Analysis in Japan.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the incidence of colostomy, aiming to identify its risk factors following chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) in a large Asian cohort, and to clarify the prognostic significance of a complete response (CR). While CRT is the standard of care for SCCA, the risk of colostomy remains a major concern due to its potential impact on a patient's quality of life. Prior studies focused mainly on Western populations, and data from Asian cohorts are limited. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study of 246 patients with

Nursing Support for Cancer Symptoms and Caregiver Burden in General Wards: Protocol for a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey in Japan.

BACKGROUND: General ward nurses increasingly care for patients with advanced cancer; however, the implementation of evidence-based nursing support remains unclear. Multicenter palliative care unit (PCU) surveys quantified nursing practices for major cancer-related symptoms and caregiver burden using systematically developed item sets; however, findings from PCU settings may not directly generalize to general wards, given differences in staffing, patient populations, and resources. OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency of nonpharmacological nursing for five cancer-related symptoms (pain, dyspn

Nationwide epidemiologic study of osteochondroma in Japan: Analysis of 4843 cases from the bone and soft tissue tumor registry.

Osteochondroma is the most common benign bone tumor; however, large-scale epidemiologic data remain limited, particularly in Asian populations. This nationwide registry-based study aimed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of osteochondroma in Japan. Patients diagnosed with osteochondroma between 2006 and 2019 were identified from the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor (BSTT) Registry of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. Demographics, tumor location, subtype (solitary osteochondroma [SO] vs. multiple osteochondroma [MO]), and surgical history were analyzed, and comparisons bet

Implementation of a dried blood spot-based Newborn screening program for adenosine deaminase deficiency: An initial experience in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency is a congenital error of purine metabolism and major cause of severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). This life-threatening hereditary disorder requires early diagnosis and intervention. However, conventional SCID newborn screening (NBS) using T-cell receptor excision circles (TREC) and kappa-deleting recombination excision circles (KREC) may fail to identify ADA-deficient cases. Therefore, ADA-specific NBS is needed to ensure comprehensive detection. METHODS: We analyzed ADA-specific NBS data in Kumamoto, Japan (October 2024-August 2025). Deo

The burden of hand, foot, and mouth disease attributable to climate variability: A nationwide time-series modeling study in Japan.

Substantial evidence suggests that meteorological variables are associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) incidence; however, geographic variation in these associations and in the corresponding attributable burden remains insufficiently characterized. We conducted a nationwide time-series analysis to quantify the burden of HFMD attributable to non-optimal ambient temperature and relative humidity in Japan, while examining between-prefecture variation in the estimated associations. For each of the 47 prefectures (2000-2019), exposure-lag-response functions for temperature and humidit

A multicenter, retrospective study in patients with multiple sclerosis treated with natalizumab in a real-world setting in Japan: The REFIND study.

BACKGROUND: Natalizumab (TYSABRIⓇ) is known to be an efficacious treatment at a standard-interval dosing (SID; 300 mg administered intravenously every 4 weeks) for patients with relapsing-remitting sclerosis (RRMS). However, the SID of natalizumab is associated with increased risk of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). Lengthening the time between doses of natalizumab beyond 4 weeks, also known as extended-interval dosing (EID), is associated with lower risk of PML in patients with RRMS, and patients have been switched from SID to EID without meaningful loss of efficacy. In this
