EEG, cognitive and psychopathological abnormalities in children irradiated in utero.

Computerised EEG, a clinical neuropsychiatric examination, and IQ tests were examined in 50 randomly selected prenatally irradiated 9-10-year-old children and compared with 50 randomly selected non-exposed control children of the same age. In the prenatally irradiated children a disorganised EEG-pattern with slow and paroxysmal activity (acute and high-voltage delta-waves, sometimes: spike-waves) in the left fronto-temporal region was disclosed. There was also a significant predominance of delta- and beta (dominant frequency: 20 Hz)-power in the frontal lobe, particularly, in the left fronto-t

Schizophrenia and autism considered as the products of an agnosic right shift gene.

Crow (1995a) has argued that schizophrenia is caused by a gene associated with the evolution of human language and cerebral specialisation. This paper suggests a mechanism for Crow's theory which requires only one new assumption for the right shift genetic model of handedness and cerebral dominance (Annett, 1978). The proposal is that the RS+ allele, whose normal function is to induce the left hemisphere to serve speech by impairing speech-related cortex in the right hemisphere, tends to lose its directional coding. It becomes agnosic (RS+ a) for right versus left and impairs the left or right

Improvements in preventive care and communication for deaf patients: results of a novel primary health care program.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that profoundly deaf persons would have better preventive care compliance and improved physician communication if enrolled in a primary care program providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. DESIGN: A case-cohort community-based study. The authors had ASL-fluent research assistants interview 90 randomly selected patients (the cases) enrolled in a unique primary care program for the deaf (Deaf Services Program), which provided full-time ASL interpreters and subsidized health care costs for some patients. Eighty-five deaf controls were friends of the

Accurate diagnosis of latent tuberculosis in children, people who are immunocompromised or at risk from immunosuppression and recent arrivals from countries with a high incidence of tuberculosis: systematic review and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) [(Zopf 1883) Lehmann and Neumann 1896], is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Nearly one-third of the world's population is infected with MTB; TB has an annual incidence of 9 million new cases and each year causes 2 million deaths worldwide. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of screening tests [interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) and tuberculin skin tests (TSTs)] in latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) diagnosis to support National Institute for Health and Care Excel

Cognitive and gait in Wilson's disease: a cognitive and motor dual-task study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive and motor dual-tasks play important roles in daily life. Dual-task interference impacting gait performance has been observed not only in healthy subjects but also in subjects with neurological disorders. Approximately 44-75% of Wilson's disease (WD) patients have gait disturbance. According to our earlier research, 59.7% of WD patients have cognitive impairment. However, there are few studies on how cognition affects the gait in WD. Therefore, this study aims to explore the influence of cognitive impairment on gait and its neural mechanism in WD patients and to provide ev

Automated detection of gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma recurrence from electronic health records.

In gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA), recurrence following curative-intent resection represents one of the most clinically important outcomes. However, recurrence information is not consistently captured in structured fields within electronic health records (EHRs), and retrospective identification typically relies on labor-intensive manual chart review. We conducted a retrospective, single-center cohort study of patients with GEA who underwent R0 gastrectomy or esophagectomy from July 2020 to October 2024. A fully automated, rule-based natural language processing recurrence detection algor

Validation of the Egyptian-Arabic Version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) in Diagnosing Dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) (2012) is a brief cognitive battery that assesses five sub-domains of cognition (attention and orientation, memory, verbal fluency, language, and visuospatial abilities) which are commonly impaired in dementia. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to validate the Egyptian-Arabic ACE-III in dementia patients, and to provide cut-off scores for the ACE-III in diagnosing dementia in Egyptian-Arabic speakers. METHODS: We included 37 patients with dementia (Alzheimer's disease, n = 25, vascular dementia, n = 8, and dementia with Lewy bodies, n = 4

Linking late cognitive outcome with glioma surgery location using resection cavity maps.

Patients with a diffuse glioma may experience cognitive decline or improvement upon resective surgery. To examine the impact of glioma location, cognitive alteration after glioma surgery was quantified and related to voxel-based resection probability maps. A total of 59 consecutive patients (range 18-67 years of age) who had resective surgery between 2006 and 2011 for a supratentorial nonenhancing diffuse glioma (grade I-III, WHO 2007) were included in this observational cohort study. Standardized neuropsychological examination and MRI were obtained before and after surgery. Intraoperative sti

The development and validation of the Bronchiectasis Health Questionnaire.

Health-related quality of life or health status is significantly impaired in bronchiectasis. There is a paucity of brief, simple-to-use, disease-specific health status measures. The aim of this study was to develop and validate the Bronchiectasis Health Questionnaire (BHQ), a new health status measure that is brief and generates a single overall score.Patients with bronchiectasis were recruited from two outpatient clinics, during a clinically stable stage. The development of the questionnaire followed three phases: item generation and item reduction using Rasch analysis, validation, and repeat

Comparison of Two Perceptual Methods for the Evaluation of Vowel Perturbation Produced by Jitter.

OBJECTIVES: To explore perceptual evaluation of jitter produced by fundamental frequency (F0) variation in a sustained vowel /a/, using two different methods. One is based on listener's internal references and the other is based on external references provided by the experimenter. METHODS: We used two methods: one is magnitude estimation-converging limits (ME-CL), which is close to the standard approach used by speech therapists when they use numerical estimations and their own standards, and other is intramodal matching procedure (IMP), where each matched stimulus is to be compared with a fi

Functional cerebral lateralization and interhemispheric interaction in patients with callosal agenesis.

OBJECTIVE: The corpus callosum (CC), the largest commissure in the human brain, is thought to play an essential part in the formation and maintenance of lateralized cognitive and motor functions. In particular, it has been suggested that inhibition of the subdominant hemisphere via commissural fiber tracts plays a crucial role for functional lateralization. However, many studies supporting this idea have either been conducted in nonhuman model species or used indirect measures of callosal functioning. METHOD: In order to directly assess the impact of the presence or absence of the CC on both

The role of DCDC2 genetic variants and low socioeconomic status in vulnerability to attention problems.

Both genetic and socio-demographic factors influence the risk for behavioral problems in the developmental age. Genetic studies indicate that shared genetic factors partially contribute to behavioral and learning problems, in particular reading disabilities (RD). For the first time, we explore the conjoint role of DCDC2 gene, an identified RD candidate gene, and socioeconomic status (SES) upon behavioral phenotypes in a general population of Italian children. Two of the most replicated DCDC2 markers [i.e., regulatory element associated with dyslexia 1 (READ1), rs793862] were genotyped in 631 c

Questionnaire for monitoring auditory and language development in the first year.

PURPOSE: To validate a monitoring questionnaire about hearing and language development applied by community health agents in the first year of life. METHODS: Seventy six community health agents, previously trained on infant hearing health, administered a questionnaire to the families of 304 children with ages from 0 to 1 year. The questionnaire contains questions regarding hearing and language development and, for all age groups, the question "Does your child hear well?" was presented. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed by analyzing false positive and false negative rates of the i

Promoting child-initiated social-communication in children with autism: Son-Rise Program intervention effects.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the effects of the Son-Rise Program (SRP), an intensive treatment aimed to improve child-initiated social communication in children with autism. Six children between the ages of 47 and 78 months were provided with 40 h of SRP, with pre- to post-treatment behavioral changes tested using a novel passive interaction probe task. Results showed an increase in the frequency of spontaneous social orienting and gestural communication for the experimental children, compared to six age- and behaviorally-matched control children with autism. In addition, for the children w

Autobiographical memory in semantic dementia: a longitudinal fMRI study.

Whilst patients with semantic dementia (SD) are known to suffer from semantic memory and language impairments, there is less agreement about whether memory for personal everyday experiences, autobiographical memory, is compromised. In healthy individuals, functional MRI (fMRI) has helped to delineate a consistent and distributed brain network associated with autobiographical recollection. Here we examined how the progression of SD affected the brain's autobiographical memory network over time. We did this by testing autobiographical memory recall in a SD patient, AM, with fMRI on three occasio

Severe Impairment Battery Language scale: a language-assessment tool for Alzheimer's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Communication problems are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, but instruments to assess these symptoms are limited. Our objective was to create a new scale, based on the language subscale of the Severe Impairment Battery (SIB), as a sensitive and reliable measurement of treatment effects on language performance. METHODS: All 24 items of the SIB language subscale were chosen for analysis. Baseline scores of 1320 moderate-to-severe patients (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE] score, <15), from a combined AD database of four Memantine clinical trials (Study Codes: IE-2101
