Postmortem blood alcohol content among late-middle aged and older suicide decedents: Associations with suicide precipitating/risk factors, means, and other drug toxicology.

BACKGROUND: This study examined blood alcohol content (BAC) among suicide decedents aged 50+ and its associations with suicide precipitating/risk factors, means, and other drug toxicology. METHODS: The National Violent Death Reporting System, 2005-2015, provided data (N = 56,118 for all suicide decedents and N = 29,115 with alcohol test results). We used logistic regression models, with BAC > 0.0 (BAC positive) and BAC > = 0.08 (intoxication) as the dependent variables. RESULTS: Almost a third of decedents who were tested for alcohol were BAC positive, and almost two-thirds of those who were

A consensus statement on the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis-From evidence-based medicine to the real-life setting.

The European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) published a treatment algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in 2014, which provides practical guidance for the prioritization of interventions. Further analysis of real-world data for OA provides additional evidence in support of pharmacological interventions, in terms of management of OA pain and function, avoidance of adverse events, disease-modifying effects and long-term outcomes, e.g., delay of total joint replacement surgery, and pharmacoeconomic factors such as reduction

American marriage in the early twenty-first century.

During the past century the U.S. family system has seen vast changes--in marriage and divorce rates, cohabitation, childbearing, sexual behavior, and women's work outside the home. Andrew Cherlin reviews these historic changes, noting that marriage remains the most common living arrangement for raising children, but that children, especially poor and minority children, are increasingly likely to grow up in single-parent families and to experience family instability. Cherlin describes the economic and cultural forces that have transformed family life. Job market changes have drawn married women

[Primary headache and depression].

Primary headaches--mainly tension-type headache and migraine--affect a significant portion of the population. Depression is also highly prevalent. The co-existence of a primary headache and depression in the same patient therefore might be a coincidence due to the high prevalence of these conditions, but there might be a causal relationship between them, or headaches and depression might have a common background. This review of the literature summarizes the features of the relationship between primary headaches and depression. Depression is more prevalent in headache patients than in the heada

Protecting Africa's children from extreme risk: a runway of sustainability for PEPFAR programmes.

PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), a landmark US foreign health policy, is recognised for saving 26 million lives from HIV. PEPFAR investments have also had life-saving impacts for children across sub-Saharan Africa through childhood HIV prevention, care, and treatment, ensuring 7·8 million babies were born HIV-free, supporting 13 million orphaned and vulnerable children, and protecting 10·3 million girls from sexual abuse. In this Health Policy, we review data from UNAIDS, UNICEF, World Bank, Violence Against Children Surveys, SPECTRUM model data, and Population-based HIV Im

The Perceptions of Hispanic College Students with Disabilities Towards Diet and Exercise a Potential Impact on Health, Rehabilitation and Employment Longevity.

Understanding potential barriers to physical activity and diet for Hispanics with disabilities is integral to developing effective policies and interventions that support their engagement in healthy diets and exercise. Adequate activity and proper nutrition have the potential to improve structural factor inequities, social determinants of health, risk factors, and health system barriers. There is a scarcity of studies on Hispanic college students living with disabilities. This mixed-method study aimed to identify the perceptions of Hispanic college students living with disabilities towards die

Integration and scale-up of a primary healthcare-based chronic wound care package for persons affected by skin-neglected tropical diseases and other conditions in Ethiopia: a protocol for an implementation research study.

BACKGROUND: The profound impact of wounds on the quality of life of those affected is often underestimated. Chronic wounds impose substantial burdens on individuals and communities in terms of disability, mental distress, stigma, and economic productivity losses. To effectively address these challenges, an integrated and comprehensive approach to primary healthcare-based chronic wound care prevention and management is essential. This implementation research study aims to assess the integration and scale-up of a comprehensive package of primary healthcare-based wound care and psychosocial suppo

Perioperative Treatment of Neuropathic Pain (Nerve SPACE 2025).

UNLABELLED: Neuropathic pain following brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injury represents one of the most debilitating and least effectively treated sequelae of nerve trauma. WHERE ARE WE NOW?: Neuropathic pain affects a majority of patients with severe nerve injuries and is frequently more disabling than associated motor or sensory deficits. The current scientific understanding implicates maladaptive peripheral and central nervous system changes, including neuroma formation, nociceptor hyperexcitability, central sensitization, and cortical reorganization. Health facilities as a lever for birth registration in low- and middle-income countries: a realist review.

The health system has been identified as a key lever for increasing access to birth registration (BR) directly after birth. BR is critical for upholding human rights and accessing essential services, yet many low- and middle-income countries struggle with low BR rates. In this realist synthesis, we reviewed literature on two separate interventions that are designed to increase access to BR services. This included (i) embedding or appointing an official to register births in health facilities and (ii) incorporating education on BR in routine perinatal care programmes. This study aimed to suppor

First-Line Enfortumab Vedotin Plus Pembrolizumab in Platinum-Ineligible Urothelial Carcinoma: A Three-Case Series.

Locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (la/mUC) has a poor prognosis. In routine clinical practice, platinum-based chemotherapy has generally been used as first-line treatment. Enfortumab vedotin plus pembrolizumab (EVP) has recently been introduced as another first-line option; however, patients who are platinum-ineligible, such as those with severe renal dysfunction and/or poor performance status, are often underrepresented in clinical studies, and the optimal systemic therapy for this group remains uncertain. Herein, we report three platinum-ineligible patients with la/mUC who

Antimicrobial Strategies for Chronic Cutaneous Ulcers: From Preclinical Nanotechnology to Clinical Practice.

Chronic cutaneous ulcers represent a growing global public health challenge, affecting an estimated 1-2% of the population in high-income countries and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden through prolonged hospitalizations, repeated outpatient visits, increased risk of amputation, and significant impairment of patients' quality of life. Standard wound care centered on debridement, moisture-balancing dressings, and systemic antibiotics fails to resolve a large proportion of cases, particularly those complicated by polymicrobial biofilm infection and antimicrobial resistance, underscorin
