Hypophysitis caused by Rathke's cleft cyst. Case report.

A 62-year-old woman presented with general malaise persisting for 2 months and narrowing of her visual field. T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed swelling of the pituitary gland and stalk, and a homogeneous isointense intra- and suprasellar mass enhanced by gadolinium. During outpatient follow up, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she developed diabetes insipidus and panhypopituitarism. T1-weighted MR imaging demonstrated shrinkage of the lesion and disappearance of the central hypointense area indicating the cyst cavity, especially in the pituitary stalk. She underwent sur

1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy in dementia.

Present data support the concept that (1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) may become an adjunct to clinical evaluation for differential diagnosis of dementia in the future. The value of (1)H MRS in monitoring the disease progression in dementia is expected to be in areas where group effects are sought such as monitoring effectiveness of therapies in drug trials. Elevation of myoinositol to creatine (mI/Cr) and choline to creatine (Cho/Cr) and reduction in the neuronal integrity marker N-acetylaspartate to creatine (NAA/Cr) levels in individuals with mild cognitive impairment and pr

MR imaging of Liliequist's membrane.

Liliequist's membrane is an arachnoid structure well-known to neurosurgeons. However, the importance of this membrane had been lost until the development of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). ETV is superior in its minimal invasiveness, but in some subgroups of hydrocephalus, the effectiveness of ETV may be reduced. Liliequist's membrane may block the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow from the defect of the third ventricle floor, which may cause failure of ETV. Liliequist's membrane can be visualized on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in normal healthy individuals, however, its visibility is

Innovative magnetic resonance imaging diagnostic agents based on paramagnetic Gd(III) complexes.

Gd(III) complexes are under intense scrutiny as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They act by enhancing tissutal proton relaxation rates. Much has already been done in order to get an in-depth understanding of the relationships between structure, dynamics, and contrastographic ability of these paramagnetic complexes. Their potential in the assessment of flow, perfusion, and capillary permeability has already been established. The next challenges are in the field of molecular imaging applications, which would allow the attainment of early diagnosis based on the recognition o

MR imaging of the penis.

The signal intensity of the corpora cavernosa of the penis at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging may vary from that of the corpus spongiosum; this difference is dependent on the rate of blood flow within the cavernous spaces that constitute the corporal bodies. Also visible at MR imaging are the layers of fibrous tissue that envelop the corporal bodies, the deep arteries and veins, subcutaneous connective tissue, tunica dartos, epidermis, and urethra. While the iliac, pudendal, perineal, and common penile arteries can be evaluated with three-dimensional MR angiography, the smaller end arteries of

Clinical features of symptomatic Rathke's cleft cyst.

To investigate the clinical features of Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs), we retrospectively analyzed 15 cases with histologically confirmed RCCs. All patients underwent formal testing of visual field, endocrinological evaluation and magnetic resonance imagings. As overall presenting symptoms, endocrine disturbance was the most common symptoms, followed by visual disturbance and headache. Among the endocrine disturbances based on adenohypophysial dysfunction, hyperprolactinemia was most common. Considering the size of RCCs, RCCs could induce hyperprolactinemia only when the cysts became large enoug

We report an unusual case of T 0 N 2 M 0 small cell lung cancer in a patient with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). A 52-year-old man began to notice muscle weakness in a left limb in January 1996, which was followed by muscle weakness in his left arm and fingers, appetite loss, and general fatigue. An electromyogram (EMG) showed the waxing phenomenon in response to high-frequency repetitive stimulation. Lambest-Eaton myasthenic syndrome was diagnosed, based on his symptoms and EMG findings. Chest computed tomography (CT) was done, and left paratracheal, tracheobronchial, subaortic, an

Optic nerve enlargement and chronic visual loss.

We present four patients with sarcoidosis of the anterior visual pathways. The first patient presented with unilateral visual loss, a mass lesion at the optic nerve head, and an enlarged orbital optic nerve. The second patient presented with bilateral progressive painless visual loss, associated with optic nerve pallor and visual field loss. In these two patients, optic nerve biopsy was diagnostic of sarcoidosis. The third patient developed optic nerve and chiasmal involvement after sarcoidosis was established by lacrimal gland biopsy. The fourth patient had optic nerve, pulmonary, and lymph n

[Lymphocytic adenohypophysitis: MRI findings of a suspected case].

We report a case of a 26-year-old woman who had developed decrease of visual acuity, and restriction of the temporal visual field of the left eye in the 30th week of gestation. A skull roentgenogram showed no abnormality, but a pituitary mass was visualized by plain computed tomographic scan. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a symmetric sellar mass which had homogeneous signal intensity in all pulse sequences. T1 relaxation time of the mass was elongated as compared with that of a normal pituitary gland. The height of the mass was 11mm, and optic chiasm appeared compressed by the

Task dependent variations of ocular lateropulsion in Wallenberg's syndrome.

The eye movements of a patient with a left lateral medullary infarct (Wallenberg's syndrome) were recorded using the scleral search coil in magnetic field technique. When asked to look at spontaneously appearing targets, saccades to the left were generally accurate but those to the right reached the target by multiple step refixation saccades. Large amplitude rightward saccades were possible between two continuously visible targets or when making voluntary saccades in the dark. Vertical saccades, up or down, between spontaneously appearing targets were always associated with a leftward eye mov

Association Between the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index and Aneurysmal Wall Enhancement on High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance Vessel Wall Imaging in Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is a critical driver of intracranial aneurysm (IA) instability. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), a novel composite inflammatory biomarker, may reflect the local mural changes observed on vessel wall imaging (VWI). PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To investigate the association between the SII and aneurysmal wall enhancement (AWE) on high-resolution vessel wall imaging (HRVWI), and to evaluate SII as a potential biomarker for aneurysm instability. STUDY TYPE: Prospective cross-sectional study. POPULATION: Four hundred and eighteen intracranial aneurysms in 311 patien

Electroactive fibrous scaffolds for tendon repair: From bioelectric microenvironment engineering to motion-driven and remotely activated stimulation.

Tendon injuries rank among the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders. Their clinical treatment remains challenging due to the inherently poor self-healing capacity and highly ordered hierarchical architecture of native tendon tissues. In recent years, electroactive fiber-based biomaterials have attracted growing attention in the field of tendon regeneration, attributed to their unique capability to mimic the fibrous microstructure of natural tissues while providing therapeutic electrical stimulation throughout tissue repair. In this review, recent advances in electroactive fibrous scaffolds

High-Voltage Nanosecond Pulse Field Ablation Using a Compliant Circular Catheter to Treat Atrial Fibrillation: Lesion Durability and One-Year Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Most pulsed field ablation (PFA) technologies for atrial fibrillation use microsecond-scale pulses. Nanosecond pulses, by virtue of their short duration, enable larger pulse amplitudes to project lesion depth, without near-field thermal effects. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to determine the outcomes of treating paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using a novel circular nanosecond PFA (nsPFA) catheter. METHODS: In a first-in-human study of patients with symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, the nsPFA catheter was used to deliver 2.5-second or 5-second applications. Inva

PURPOSE: Fast-field echo resembling a computed tomography using restricted echo-spacing (FRACTURE), a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence (Philips Healthcare) providing computed tomography-like bone contrast, enables excellent visualization of bones and tendons. Volume rendering (VR) images created from this sequence show anatomical details of a patient's actual structures. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of FRACTURE and its VR images for visualizing wrist tendons on MRI images from patients and healthy individuals. METHODS: Twenty subjects were included, 10 patients wit

Mapping Visual Field Defects With fMRI - Impact of Approach and Experimental Conditions.

Current initiatives to restore vision emphasize the need for objective assessments of visual field (VF) defects as pursued with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) approaches. Here, we compared population receptive field (pRF) mapping-based VF reconstructions to an fMRI method that uses more robust visual stimulation (on-off block design) in combination with individualized anatomy-driven retinotopic atlas-information (atlas-based VF). We investigated participants with sizable peripheral VF-deficits due to advanced glaucoma (n = 4) or retinitis pigmentosa (RP; n = 2) and controls (n =

Restoration of orbicularis oculi muscle function in rabbits with peripheral facial paralysis via an implantable artificial facial nerve system.

The purpose of the present study was to restore orbicularis oculi muscle function using the implantable artificial facial nerve system (IAFNS). The in vivo part of the IAFNS was implanted into 12 rabbits that were facially paralyzed on the right side of the face to restore the function of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which was indicated by closure of the paralyzed eye when the contralateral side was closed. Wireless communication links were established between the in vivo part (the processing chip and microelectrode) and the external part (System Controller program) of the system, which were

The iron-age of superconductivity: structural correlations and commonalities among the various families having -Fe-Pn- slabs (Pn = P, As and Sb).

The fascination of mankind towards a sudden change of a property, like colour, shape, elasticity, viscosity, electrical conductivity and magnetism, is well known. If the change in property is such that it leads to disapperance of an existing property or development of a new property then the effect is magical. It is for this reason that superconductivity remains an enigma for scientists for over a century after Kammerlingh Onnes discovered that the electrical resistance of mercury falls to zero below a temperature of 4.2 K. Since then scientists have been enchanted by superconductivity. Over t

Thermal Cycling Behavior of Aged FeNiCoAlTiNb Cold-Rolled Shape Memory Alloys.

Fe-Ni-Co-Al-based systems have attracted a lot of interest due to their large recoverable strain. In this study, the microstructure and thermal cycling behaviors of Fe41Ni28Co17Al11.5Ti1.25Nb1.25 (at.%) 98.5% cold-rolled alloys after annealing treatment at 1277 °C for 1 h, followed by aging for 48 h at 600 °C, were investigated. From the electron backscatter diffraction results, we see that the texture intensity increased from 9.4 to 16.5 mud and the average grain size increased from 300 to 400 μm as the annealing time increased from 0.5 h to 1 h. The hardness results for different aging heat

Conjoined nerve root in a patient with lumbar disc herniation accompanied by a lumbosacral spine anomaly: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A nerve root anomaly, typified by a conjoined nerve root, is a rare finding. Conjoined nerve root anomalies are easily missed even in preoperative advanced imaging modalities, which can be potentially troublesome during and after surgery. In this report, we present a case of conjoined right L5-S1 nerve root in a patient with lumbar disc herniation, accompanied by spina bifida occulta, which was undiagnosed on preoperative imaging studies. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old Asian (Japanese) woman presented with low back pain and right leg radiating pain due to lumbar disc herniation at the
