Comparison of sensitivity of immunofluorescent microscopy to that of a combination of immunofluorescent microscopy and immunomagnetic separation for detection of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in adult bovine feces.

A direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) (Merifluor; Meridian Diagnostics, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio) was compared to an immunomagnetic separation (IMS) assay (Dynabeads; Dynal, Inc., Lake Success, N.Y.) coupled with immunofluorescent microscopy (Waterborne, Inc., New Orleans, La.) for their ability to detect low concentrations of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts in adult bovine fecal material. IMS-DFA resulted in a 2-log-unit increase in sensitivity (10 oocysts/g) compared to DFA alone (1,000 oocysts/g). The higher sensitivity obtained with IMS-DFA resulted from testing 2 g of fecal material instea

Novel insole design for diabetic foot ulcer management.

Around the world, over 400 million people suffer from diabetes. In a chronic diabetic condition, the skin underneath the foot often becomes extremely soft and brittle, resulting in the development of foot ulcers. In literature, a plethora of footwear designs have been developed to reduce the induced stresses on a diabetic foot and to consequently prevent the incidences of foot ulcers. However, to date, no insole design exists which can handle post-ulcer diabetic foot conditions without hindering the mobility of the patients. In the current work, a novel custom insole design with arch support a

Occupational exposure to graphene: A pilot study combining workplace sampling with in vitro pulmonary toxicity assessment.

Graphene is increasingly produced and utilized in industrial applications, raising concerns regarding occupational exposure and associated health risks. While numerous toxicological studies have investigated the hazard potential of laboratory-produced graphene, relatively little is known about exposure to airborne graphene particles in actual workplace environments or the toxicity of samples collected in the workplace. In the present study, we combined occupational exposure assessment in a graphene production facility with in vitro toxicological evaluation of graphene samples produced by liqui

Gillespie syndrome caused by a novel ITPR1 gene variant: a phenotype-genotype correlation.

BACKGROUND: Gillespie syndrome (GS) is a rare congenital disorder with ocular and neurological defects. Classically, it has been noted to have a triad of cerebellar ataxia, variable absence of iris but always with a scalloped edge and intellectual disability. This scalloped iris edge is essential to make a diagnosis of GS. Both autosomal dominant and recessive inheritance have been reported with de novo pathogenic variants in the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 1 gene (ITPR1). We report a novel variant of ITPR1 gene causing Gillespie syndrome in multiple members of a family. MATERI
