BACKGROUND: Electronic medical records (EMRs) are widely used in maternity care, but their longer-term effects across multiple domains of the Quintuple Aim remain uncertain. This study examined whether EMR use following implementation in December 2017 was associated with temporal changes in health outcomes, patient-experience proxies, and resource use.
METHODS: We conducted a 12-year interrupted time series analysis at a high-volume metropolitan maternity service in Queensland, Australia, following implementation of the EMR. Population-level data from the Queensland Perinatal Data Collection

OBJECTIVES: Maternal ethnogeographic origins and ancestry can influence perinatal health. This study evaluated the impact of nationalities grouped into geographic categories on maternal and neonatal outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: The study employed a retrospective birth cohort design.
METHODS: A total of 30,667 pregnant women and their neonates born at more than 24 weeks' gestational age in secondary and tertiary government maternity hospitals in Qatar were included. Data were extracted from a preexisting maternity registry. Women were classified into seven ethnogeographic groups based on internati

Introduction: Upper urinary tract infections (UUTIs) are among the most common serious infections during pregnancy and may be associated with maternal and fetal complications. The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens has led to the use of broader-spectrum antibiotics, including meropenem. However, data regarding the safety and efficacy of meropenem in pregnant women remain limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the indications, efficacy, and safety of meropenem treatment in pregnant women with UUTIs and its impact on maternal and fetal outcomes. Methods: We conducted

BACKGROUND: Child mortality, defined as the likelihood of an infant dying before the age of five, is still a significant concern in developing countries with limited healthcare facilities. Sierra Leone, with a child mortality rate of 68.418 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024-one of the highest globally-necessitates urgent public health interventions to mitigate this critical issue. This study examined the cultural, socioeconomic, and demographic factors associated with under-five mortality in Sierra Leone.
METHODS: This investigation used data from the Sierra Leone Demographic and Health Su

INTRODUCTION: Solitary childbirth-giving birth without any form of assistance-remains a serious global public health issue, especially in low-resource settings. It is associated with preventable maternal complications such as hemorrhage and sepsis, and poses significant risks to newborns, including birth asphyxia, infection, and early neonatal death. In Ethiopia, where many births occur outside health facilities, understanding the spatial and socio-demographic patterns of solitary childbirth is vital for informing targeted interventions to improve maternal and child health outcomes. This study

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) directly impacts pregnancy outcomes, and few studies have analyzed the related risk factors for maternal and fetal/perinatal complications in Brazil. We described and analyzed the risk factors for maternal and fetal complications in SLE pregnancies at an outpatient clinic in the State of Amazonas, Northern Brazil.
METHODS: Pregnancies that occurred after the SLE diagnosis between 2001 and 2020 were analyzed. Risk factors for adverse outcomes were determined using logistic regression.
RESULTS: A total of 155 pregnancies from 109 women were includ

Introduction: In 2017, approximately 295,000 women died during and immediately following pregnancy and childbirth worldwide, with 94% of these deaths occurring in low-resource settings. The Dominican Republic (DR) exhibits one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean despite the fact that 99% of registered births in the country are reportedly attended by a skilled birth attendant. This paradox implies that programs to support healthcare worker knowledge and skills improvement are vital to improving maternal health outcomes in the DR. Helping Mot

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors. High doses of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure can cause pregnancy loss and infant deaths in animals, but the associations between PFAS exposures and risk of miscarriage in humans are not well studied.
METHODS: Using a case-control study nested within the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC, 1996-2002), we compared 220 pregnancies ending in miscarriage during weeks 12-22 of gestation, with 218 pregnancies resulting in live b

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies have previously reported that maternal socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with adverse feto-maternal outcomes. However, little attention has been paid to the question of the woman's employment status. The aim of this observational study was to examine the relationship between maternal employment status at the first antenatal visit and pregnancy outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: The study was confined to women with a singleton pregnancy who attended for maternity care between the years 2010 and 2017 and delivered a baby weighing ≥500 g. Self-reported sociodemogra

BACKGROUND: Obstetric complications and maternal deaths can be prevented through safe delivery process. Facility based delivery significantly reduces maternal mortality by increasing women's access to skilled personnel attendance. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, most deliveries take place without skilled attendants and outside health facilities. Utilization of facility-based delivery is affected by socio-cultural norms and several other factors including cost, long distance, accessibility and availability of quality services. This study examined country-level variations of the self-reported ca

BACKGROUND: The maternal mortality ratio in India has been declining over the past decade, but remains unacceptably high at 212 per 100,000 live births. Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) and pre- eclampsia/eclampsia contribute to 40% of all maternal deaths. We assessed facility readiness and provider preparedness to deal with these two maternal complications in public and private health facilities of northern Karnataka state, south India.
METHODS: We undertook a cross-sectional study of 131 primary health centres (PHCs) and 148 higher referral facilities (74 public and 74 private) in eight distric

BACKGROUND: Malaria in pregnancy is associated with maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality in endemic areas, but information on imported cases to non-endemic areas is scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of malaria in pregnancy in two general hospitals in Madrid, Spain.
METHODS: Retrospective descriptive study of laboratory-confirmed malaria in pregnant women at the Fuenlabrada University Hospital and the Príncipe de Asturias University Hospital, in Madrid, over a six- and 11-year period, respectively. Relevant epidemiological, cli

Despite all of our advances women with epilepsy face obstacles when it comes to pregnancy and childbearing. Many of these obstacles are social, based on incorrect and inappropriate attitudes of the public towards persons with epilepsy. Unfortunately many of the uninformed public are health care providers. We must continue to educate not only our patients but our colleagues so that women with epilepsy will cease to face discriminatory behaviour. Most women with epilepsy can conceive and bear healthy children. They have higher probabilities of infertility but this is often amenable to treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess maternal and perinatal outcomes associated with a trial of labor and attempted vaginal birth after prior low-segment vertical cesarean delivery.
STUDY DESIGN: During a 10-year period in a single tertiary hospital, all patients with a prior low-segment uterine incision (whether vertical or transverse) were considered candidates for a trial of labor in the absence of other contraindications or patient refusal. Among the 1137 women who underwent low-segment vertical cesarean delivery, 262 were subsequently delivered of 322 live-born infants, and 174 (54%) of

PROGRESS: Over the past decade, the world has made policy progress for newborns including the first global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.2 (< 12 neonatal deaths per 1000 live births) and the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP). However, gaps remain for investment and action, especially for babies born too soon, too small, or who become sick. An estimated 20-30 million newborns have life-threatening conditions requiring hospital care each year. Annually, approximately 2.3 million newborns die during the neonatal period, the majority being preterm. A further 1 million newborn survivor

BACKGROUND: Tocolytics are recommended in international guidelines as treatment for threatened preterm birth. Atosiban, an oxytocin receptor antagonist, is a registered tocolytic drug specifically indicated for the treatment of threatened preterm birth. Although tocolytics have been shown to delay birth, benefits on neonatal outcomes have not been demonstrated. In the APOSTEL 8 trial we aimed to assess superiority of tocolysis with atosiban compared with placebo in threatened preterm birth from 30 weeks and 0 days (30+0 weeks) to 33+6 weeks of gestation in improving neonatal morbidity and mort
