BACKGROUND: Anterior segmental osteotomy has become an established surgical technique to achieve functional occlusion and improve the facial profile in the treatment of maxillary protrusion. Postoperative nasal changes, however, are somewhat unpredictable. The here presented subapical anterior maxillary segmental osteotomy has been developed to avoid such unintended nasal changes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients (29 women and 3 men; age range, 18-40 y; mean age, 22 y) with maxillary protrusion underwent subapical anterior maxillary segmental osteotomy. A horizontal osteotomy was car

Facial aging is a dynamic process involving the aging of soft tissue and bony structures. The shape, size, and volume of the bones of the face have all been shown to change. The cosmetic community has focused on soft tissue changes, particularly changes in the skin and loss of fat volume. However, the bony components of the face are also important for overall facial 3D contour. "The bones of the face retain the capacity for remodeling at any age." Dentofacial orthopedics is the area of dentistry concerned with the supervision, guidance, and correction of the growing and mature orofacial struct

Inversion of premolars is an extremely rare condition, which usually requires extraction. This case report describes the inversion of an impacted maxillary second premolar in an 11-year-old male, and the multidisciplinary treatment approach for bringing the tooth into a normal position within the arch. In order to provide sufficient space for surgical reimplantation of the tooth, the mesially-drifted neighbouring maxillary first molar was first endodontically treated, followed by orthodontic distalization of the tooth. The inverted tooth was removed surgically and reimplanted without the use o

OBJECTIVE: Distraction osteogenesis has been widely used for the craniofacial region and even applied to alveolar bones to reduce the cleft width of cleft lip and/or palate patients. However, there have been no reports on the limitations on the total amount of lengthening that can be accomplished by distraction osteogenesis in this area. Therefore, we investigated how different extents of distraction osteogenesis affect the healing process using a canine cleft palate model.
METHODS: Six beagle dogs were used in this study. A bony segment including the canine was prepared and translocated into

Upper airway surgery is an important treatment option for patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), particularly for those who have failed or cannot tolerate positive airway pressure therapy. Surgery aims to reduce anatomical upper airway obstruction in the nose, oropharynx, and hypopharynx. Procedures addressing nasal obstruction include septoplasty, turbinectomy, and radiofrequency ablation (RF) of the turbinates. Surgical procedures to reduce soft palate redundancy include uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, uvulopalatal flap, laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty, and RF of the soft palate with adeno

The purpose of this case report was to describe combined endodontic and orthodontic treatment of a patient who had permanent maxillary central incisors fused with supernumerary teeth. A severe esthetic problem and crowding in the maxillary arch were present clinically. Radiographic examination demonstrated two separate crowns, roots and pulpal canals on each side. The therapy was initiated with endodontic treatment. Six months after the completion of endodontic therapy, mesio-distal trimming was performed and the defects were restored with anterior resin composites in order to re-establish the

When closed eruption is used to recover palatally impacted canines, patients risk a second surgical operation because the traction attachment could come off or the wire ligature, which is connected to the attachment, could break. In order to reduce this risk, a new simple technique has been developed. Instead of the classic single one, two attachments are bonded to the impacted canine. During the orthodontic finishing, the technique includes a mandibular premolar bracket bonded to the ectopic canine. This device should produce a more negative torque (Torque -17 degrees rather than -7 degrees)

Variations in the dental anatomy are found in all teeth. Knowledge of these variations, particularly concerning the location and treatment of all canals, is very important for the success of the endodontic therapy. The purpose of this study is to present a clinical case of a maxillary second molar with three palatal canals, two mesio-buccal and one disto-buccal canal. This report serves to remind clinicians that such anatomical variations should be taken into account during endodontic treatment of the maxillary molars.

This is a case report of a patient with bilateral labial impaction of maxillary canines causing pressure resorption on the lateral aspects of the maxillary central incisors. The orthodontic treatment plan included extraction of the impacted canines, positioned between the central and the lateral incisors. Six years after the orthodontic treatment, the affected central incisors remained asymptomatic.

The skulls of 1195 Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) from six geographically distinct populations were examined for tooth rotation. Our objectives were to determine tooth rotation patterns in Japanese serows, investigate geographical variation in tooth rotation and examine whether space limitations in the jaw accounted for variations. We then sought to explain the origin of tooth rotation in the Japanese serow. Rotated teeth were found in 131 specimens (62 males, 57 females and 12 unknown gender), with no statistically significant difference between males and females (chi(2)=0.03, P=0.86, d

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to prospectively evaluate the use of two distractors for a simultaneous maxillo-mandibular distraction osteogenesis without the use of intermaxillary fixation in the restorative treatment of hemifacial microsomia.
METHODS: The authors analyzed the clinical and radiological data of five patients with type I hemifacial microsomia (one patient), type IIa hemifacial microsomia (two patients), and Goldenhar syndrome (two patients). Follow-up examinations were performed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.
RESULTS: All the patients had satisfactory correction of the fa

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was for the first time to examine on postmortal material the total midpalatal length of the hard palate and the length of its two components (the maxillary and palatine parts) in trisomy 21 fetuses, and to compare the results to normal standards.
DESIGN: Material from 31 human fetuses with genetically verified trisomy 21 was studied. The fetuses were derived from legally induced or spontaneous abortions. Palates were, after sectioning, radiographed in lateral projection (Grenz Ray radiographic apparatus). Cephalometric measurements were performed with a

It has been known for many years that deformations of the occlusal plane of the teeth cause indefinite symptoms such as headaches or stiffness of the shoulders. However, how the occlusal plane of the teeth should be corrected remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to examine whether a correction of the deviation of the maxillary occlusal plane (MOP) from the center of dens of axis vertebrae (DAV) improves symptoms in patients having intractable headache or shoulder-stiffness. Forty patients who complained of dental abnormalities and persistent headache or shoulder-stiffness that had

The biological mechanism that leads to a cessation in the normal passive eruption of a tooth is unclear, and there are differing views as to whether ankylosis is involved. When infraocclusion of a permanent molar occurs in the permanent dentition, its effects are seen (1) locally, with exaggerated tipping and relative under-eruption of the adjacent teeth; (2) regionally, with overeruption of the opposing tooth or teeth; and (3) farther afield, with deviation of the dental midline to the affected side. Treatment aimed at eliminating these adverse conditions is warranted, and this might involve

Dilaceration is one of the causes of maxillary central incisor eruption failure. Surgical excision is frequently the first choice of treatment for a severely dilacerated incisor. In this article, the case of a horizontally impacted and dilacerated maxillary central incisor was diagnosed and treated by surgical exposure using the apically repositioned flap technique combined with orthodontic traction. The dilacerated incisor was successfully moved into alignment, with pulpal vitality and periodontal health present 2 years following treatment.

Talon cusp is a dental anomaly, which is present as an accessory cusp and is seen both in the deciduous and permanent dentition. It may occur unilaterally or bilaterally and has been reported mostly in maxillary teeth, with a few cases occurring in the mandible. Talon cusp is usually asymptomatic; however, there are many clinical problems associated with it. Talon cusp is clinically manifested in three forms: talon, semi-talon and trace talon. In this article, we present four case reports of talon cusp with an overview of different clinical variants of talon cusp, classification, etiopathogene
