Caregiving arrangements of older disabled women, caregiving preferences, and views on adequacy of care.

The role of women in caregiving to elderly people has focused primarily on their involvement as givers of care. In contrast, this article focuses on older women as recipients of caregiving. Data from the WHAS and the WHAS Caregiving Study are used to describe: the relationship of caregiving arrangements among moderately to severely disabled older women to sociodemographic, health and functional status; the characteristics of primary family caregivers and the assistance they provide; preferences for caregiving arrangements among both care recipients and caregivers; and views on adequacy of care

The effects of cold therapy in the postoperative management of pain in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

This prospective study assessed 54 consecutive arthroscopically assisted ACL reconstructions for the amount of postoperative pain relief provided by cold therapy, using the Hot/Ice Thermal Blanket. Twenty-six randomly selected patients undergoing this procedure were compared to a control group consisting of 28 patients having the identical procedure in which the Hot/Ice unit was not used postoperatively. The initial ACL injury in both groups was sports related with the exception of three patients whose injury occurred while on the job. The Hot/Ice Thermal Blanket consists of two rubber pads (b

Towards good health and wellbeing: understanding health conditions and healthcare needs among informal caregivers of older adults in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers provide care for a substantial number of older adults in Ghana, underscoring their significant contribution within the health and social care systems. However, policymakers and researchers often prioritise the health and wellbeing of care recipients over those providing the care, which could undermine the health outcomes of informal caregivers. Therefore, research on health conditions and healthcare needs among informal caregivers of older adults remains limited in Ghana. To promote good health, wellbeing and equity, this study explores health conditions and hea

AI-assisted segmentation-based fusion model integrating deep learning, radiomics, and clinical parameters for identifying coronary heart disease risk in patients with MAFLD.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), which is one of the leading causes of chronic disease-related mortality worldwide. Early identification of CHD risk in patients with MAFLD is essential for risk stratification and timely intervention. Although radiomics and deep learning (DL) have shown promising performance in medical image analysis, their application for CHD risk assessment in patients with MAFLD remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate an AI-ass

Better management of Sanders Ⅱ and Ⅲ calcaneus fractures via a tailored distractor-assisted percutaneous approach versus sinus tarsi approach: a comparative cohort study with 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The surgical strategy of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs) remains technically challenging. While sinus tarsi approach (STA) is widely applied for DIACFs, increasing concerns regarding the wound-related sequelae drive surgeons to target and advance minimally invasive surgery (MIS). This study aims to introduce a tailored distractor-assisted MIS and compares its medium-term outcomes with conventional STA approach reduction and fixation in patients with Sanders Ⅱ and Ⅲ calcaneus fractures. METHODS: From Jan 2021 to Jun 2023, 133 cases (133 feet) diagnosed as DIA

Implementation of in utero laparotomy-assisted fetoscopic spina bifida repair in two centers in Latin America: rationale for this approach in this region.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida (SB) is a severe congenital malformation that affects approximately 150,000 infants annually, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries, leading to significant morbidity and lifelong disabilities. In Latin America, the birth prevalence of SB is notably high, often exacerbated by limited healthcare resources and poor access to advanced medical care. The implementation of laparotomy-assisted fetoscopic in-utero SB repair programs in Latin America targets reducing prematurity rates and enabling vaginal births while preserving the benefits of decreased need for hyd

Surgical Management of Endometriosis Involving the Bladder and Ureter.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic, debilitating condition affecting up to 10% of reproductive-age women. Urinary tract endometriosis is found in 1%-6% of women diagnosed with pelvic endometriosis, with the most common sites being the bladder (70%-85%), ureter (9%-23%), and kidney (4%). Patients typically present with symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, dysuria, and urgency. Unfortunately, urinary tract endometriosis is often asymptomatic, potentially leading to silent obstructive uropathy and kidney failure. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a step-by-step approach for the surgical management

[Minimally invasive methods of surgical reconstruction of vesicouterine fistulas].

INTRODUCTION: Vesicouterine fistula (VVF) is a rare disease. In 83-93% of cases it develops due to caesarean section. VVF is characterized by non-physiological communication between the bladder and the uterus. This disorder has a significant social impact, causing incontinence, persistent medical and psychological maladaptation. The gold standard for treating VVF is surgical reconstruction. Early and late results of minimally invasive approaches do not differ from open procedure, but only if the surgical team has sufficient experience. AIM: To evaluate the efficiency of surgical treatment of

The effect of donor and recipient race on outcomes of assisted reproduction.

BACKGROUND: A growing literature suggests that minority races, particularly Black women, have a lower probability of live birth and higher risk of perinatal complications after autologous assisted reproductive technology. However, questions still remain as to whether these racial disparities have arisen because of associations between race and oocyte/embryo quality, the uterine environment, or a combination of the two. Oocyte donation assisted reproductive technology represents a unique approach to examine this question. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the associations between the rac
