Using Artificial Intelligence to Diagnose Lacrimal Passage Obstructions Based on Dacryocystography Images.

Dacryocystography (DCG) has been used to illustrate the morphological and functional aspects of the lacrimal drainage system in the evaluation of patients with maxillofacial trauma and epiphora. This study developed deep-learning models for the automatic classification of the status of the lacrimal passage based on DCG. The authors collected 719 DCG images from 430 patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The obstruction images were further manually categorized into 2 binary categories based on the location of the obstruction: (1) upper obstruction and (2) lower obstruction. An upper obstr

Acupuncture Treatment for Chronic Post-Traumatic Headache in Individuals with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study.

Chronic post-traumatic headache (CPTH) after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been reported in up to 60% of patients and can be extremely debilitating. While pharmacological treatments are typically used for CPTH, they frequently cause side effects and have limited effectiveness, leading individuals with CPTH to be unsatisfied with current treatment options and to seek nonpharmacological options. Acupuncture has been identified as a potential treatment option; however, the evidence in this population remains limited. The overall goal of this study was to examine the effect of a once we

Rib segmentation in chest x-ray images based on unsupervised domain adaptation.

Rib segmentation in 2D chest x-ray images is a crucial and challenging task. On one hand, chest x-ray images serve as the most prevalent form of medical imaging due to their convenience, affordability, and minimal radiation exposure. However, on the other hand, these images present intricate challenges including overlapping anatomical structures, substantial noise and artifacts, inherent anatomical complexity. Currently, most methods employ deep convolutional networks for rib segmentation, necessitating an extensive quantity of accurately labeled data for effective training. Nonetheless, achie

Effects of randomness in the development of machine learning models in neuroimaging studies of schizophrenia.

Numerous studies have used machine learning with neuroimaging data for identifying individuals with a schizophrenia diagnosis. However, inconsistent results have limited the ability of the psychiatric community to objectively judge and accept the value of this approach. One factor that has contributed to the inconsistency, but has long been ignored, is randomness in the practice of machine learning. This is manifest when executing the same machine learning pipeline multiple times on the same dataset but getting different results. In the current study, a dataset of anatomical MRI scans from 158

The Real-World Global Use of Patient-Reported Outcomes for the Care of Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Many patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been developed for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) without recommendations for clinical use. PROs differ from physician-reported disease activity indices; they assess patients' perceptions of their symptoms, functional status, mental health, and quality of life, among other areas. We sought to investigate the current global use and barriers to using PROs in clinical practice for IBD. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed. An electronic questionnaire was sent to an international group of providers who care for patients with IBD.

Attention guided neural ODE network for breast tumor segmentation in medical images.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Ultrasound is a widely used screening tool for its portability and easy operation, and DCE-MRI can highlight the lesions more clearly and reveal the characteristics of tumors. They are both noninvasive and nonradiative for assessment of breast cancer. Doctors make diagnoses and further instructions through the sizes, shapes and textures of the breast masses showed on medical images, so automatic tumor segmentation via deep neural networks can to some extent assist doctors. Compared to some challenges which the popular deep neural networks have

Evaluating the use of the ABCD2 score as a clinical decision aid in the emergency department: Retrospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical decision aids (CDAs) can help clinicians with patient risk assessment. However, there is little data on CDA calculation, interpretation and documentation in real-world ED settings. The ABCD2 score (range 0-7) is a CDA used for patients with transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and assesses risk of stroke, with a score of 0-3 being low risk. The aim of this study was to describe ABCD2 score documentation in patients with an ED diagnosis of TIA. METHODS: Retrospective observational study of patients with a working diagnosis of a TIA in two Australian EDs. Data were gathered usin

Applying systems thinking to unravel the mechanisms underlying orthostatic hypotension related fall risk.

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) is an established and common cardiovascular risk factor for falls. An in-depth understanding of the various interacting pathophysiological pathways contributing to OH-related falls is essential to guide improvements in diagnostic and treatment opportunities. We applied systems thinking to multidisciplinary map out causal mechanisms and risk factors. For this, we used group model building (GMB) to develop a causal loop diagram (CLD). The GMB was based on the input of experts from multiple domains related to OH and falls and all proposed mechanisms were supported by

Predicting unplanned readmissions in the intensive care unit: a multimodality evaluation.

A hospital readmission is when a patient who was discharged from the hospital is admitted again for the same or related care within a certain period. Hospital readmissions are a significant problem in the healthcare domain, as they lead to increased hospitalization costs, decreased patient satisfaction, and increased risk of adverse outcomes such as infections, medication errors, and even death. The problem of hospital readmissions is particularly acute in intensive care units (ICUs), due to the severity of the patients' conditions, and the substantial risk of complications. Predicting Unplann

Healthy, happy, rational: reflections on genetic counselling in the GDR.

The development of genetic counselling in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was closely connected to a well-established system of prenatal care and a process that placed reproductive decisions in the hands of women. It was embedded in the pronatalist reproductive policy of the GDR and a narrative of medical and (socialist) humanistic progress. As in other countries at that time, it promoted the goal of avoiding the birth of children with disabilities and was hence based on ableist premises. In this paper, I focus on communicative aspects of genetic counselling, as it was established in the
