Clinical evaluation of the use of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft with guided tissue regeneration in the treatment of molar furcation invasions.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential of decalcified freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) combined with a barrier material in the treatment of human molar furcation defects (experimental) as compared to the barrier technique alone (control). Fifteen pairs of Class II or III furcation invasion defects comprised the study group. Measurements with calibrated periodontal probes were made to determine soft tissue recession, probing depth, and attachment levels. Defects from each pair were randomly selected to be treated with an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (e-PTFE) and

Sustainable fabrication of superhydrophilic polypropylene nonwovens via tannic acid/silk fibroin coating and confined in-situ zinc oxide synthesis for robust oil/water separation.

To address the pressing issue of oily wastewater pollution, superhydrophilic membranes with favorable oleophobic properties have garnered considerable attention for their potential in oil/water separation. This study proposed a green strategy to fabricate superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membranes from waste polypropylene nonwovens (PP) for efficient oil/water separation. The design leverages hydrogen-bond-driven co-assembly of silk fibroin (SF) and tannic acid (TA), whereby TA's catechol/o-benzenetriol groups form robust hydrogen bonds with SF's carbonyl residues, ensuring robust a

Effects of laminin-treated membrane culture inserts on the growth of bovine oocyte-granulosa cell complexes collected from early antral follicles.

Growing bovine oocytes represent a potential source of embryos, but this has not been adopted in practice. Although several offspring were produced following a two-week culture period, further optimization of the culture system is required. In vivo, the outermost granulosa cell layer is in direct contact with the basement membrane (BM); however, this interaction is absent in cultured oocyte-granulosa cell complexes (OGCs). Since the BM is known to have regulatory roles, this study examined the effects of BM components on oocyte growth by treating membrane inserts with laminin, a major BM const

Bio-Inspired Peptide Membranes for CO2 Capture: A Molecular Dynamics Study of A6H and A6R Interfaces.

The increasing concentration of atmospheric CO2 demands the development of advanced and sustainable materials for carbon capture. Peptide-based nanostructures have emerged as promising candidates due to their tunable chemistry, biocompatibility, and ability to self-assemble into ordered supramolecular architectures. In this work, we investigate the adsorption behavior of CO2 on self-assembled A6H and A6R peptide membranes through classical molecular dynamics simulations. The A6H and A6R sequences consist of six alanine residues capped by a terminal histidine or arginine residue, respectively,

Lipidomic profiling reveals age-dependent changes in plasma membrane lipids that affect neural stem cell aging.

The aging brain exhibits a decline in the regenerative populations of neural stem cells (NSCs). While mechanisms that restore old NSC function have started to be identified, the role of lipids-especially complex lipids-in NSC aging remains largely unclear. Using lipidomic profiling by mass spectrometry, we identify age-related changes in complex lipids in quiescent NSCs in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, several polyunsaturated fatty acids increase across lipid classes in quiescent NSCs during aging. Using spatial lipidomics, we find that some of the changes in complex lipids are also observed in

Bioinspired hierarchical porous membrane for efficient enrichment and quantitative analysis of the environmental metabolite 3,5-dichlorosalicylic acid.

3,5-Dichlorosalicylic acid (3,5-DiClSA) serves as a metabolite for some pharmaceuticals or pesticides entering the environmental media, such as water and soil, leading to environmental pollution, inhibiting crop growth, and exerting toxic effects on aquatic organisms. Therefore, the quantitative analysis of 3,5-DiClSA is of great significance for protecting the environment and promoting the green development of agriculture. Inspired by the hierarchical structure and selective reabsorption mechanism of renal tubules in the kidney, we modified nanochannels with amino-functionalized pillar[6]aren

Tryptophan-substituted antimicrobial peptide temporin-1CEb: in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity against clinically isolated multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia.

Tryptophan (Trp)-substituted antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) exhibit enhanced interactions with bacterial cell membranes, potentially improving their antimicrobial efficacy. Klebsiella pneumoniae (20.59% of 2054 ICU isolates) is resistant to multiple clinically used antibiotics and presents significant treatment challenges. In the present study, three Trp-modified peptides (I4W, L12W, and I1WL5W) are generated by substituting Ile or Leu residues in temporin-1CEb, a peptide derived from frog skin, with Trp at various sites to assess their antibacterial effects and mechanisms against K. pneumoniae

Feasibility of Metal Oxide Glasses and Polymer Membranes as Sorbents for Gaseous Oxidized Mercury.

Mass spectrometry methods are currently under development by the atmospheric mercury (Hg) research community to elucidate the identity of atmospheric oxidized mercury (HgII) compounds. Due to high instrument detection limits, materials that can quantitatively preconcentrate atmospheric HgII without facilitating compound-altering chemical reactions are needed to support these methods. Cation exchange membranes (CEM) and nylon membranes are currently used to preconcentrate ambient HgII for concentration measurements and HgII compound estimation, respectively. However, CEM and nylon membranes are

Vapor/Vapor-Solid Interfacial Growth of Covalent Organic Framework Membranes on Alumina Hollow Fiber for Advanced Molecular Separation.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), known for their chemical stability and porous crystalline structure, hold promises as advanced separation membranes. However, fabricating high-quality COF membranes, particularly on industrial-preferred hollow fiber substrates, remains challenging. This study introduces a novel vapor/vapor-solid (V/V-S) method for growing ultrathin crystalline TpPa-1 COF membranes on the inner lumen surface of alumina hollow fibers (TpPa-1/Alumina). Through vapor-phase monomer introduction onto polydopamine-modified alumina at 170 °C and 1 atm, efficient polymerization and c

Platelet and Erythrocyte Membranes Coassembled Biomimetic Nanoparticles for Heart Failure Treatment.

Cardiac fibrosis is a prevalent pathological process observed in the progression of numerous cardiovascular diseases and is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death. Although the BRD4 inhibitor JQ1 has powerful antifibrosis properties, its clinical application is extremely limited due to its side effects. There remains an unmet need for effective, safe, and low-cost treatments. Here, we present a multifunctional biomimetic nanoparticle drug delivery system (PM&EM nanoparticles) assembled by platelet membranes and erythrocyte membranes for targeted JQ1 delivery in treating card

Two Novel Membranes Based on Collagen and Polyphenols for Enhanced Wound Healing.

Two novel membranes based on collagen and two polyphenols, taxifolin pentaglutarate (TfG5) and a conjugate of taxifolin with glyoxylic acid (DfTf), were prepared. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy examination confirmed the preservation of the triple helical structure of collagen. A scanning electron microscopy study showed that both materials had a porous structure. The incorporation of DfTf into the freeze-dried collagen matrix increased the aggregation of collagen fibers to a higher extent than the incorporation of TfG5, resulting in a more compact structure of the material containing

The Use of a Barley-Based Well to Define Cationic Betaglucan to Study Mammalian Cell Toxicity Associated with Interactions with Biological Structures.

Among potential macromolecule-based pharmaceuticals, polycations seem particularly interesting due to their proven antimicrobial properties and use as vectors in gene therapy. This makes an understanding of the mechanisms of these molecules' interaction with living structures important, so the goal of this paper was to propose and carry out experiments that will allow us to characterize these phenomena. Of particular importance is the question of toxicity of such structures to mammalian cells and, in the work presented here, two lines, normal fibroblasts 3T3-L1 and A549 lung cancer, were used

Peritoneal Expression of SGLT-2, GLUT1, and GLUT3 in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

INTRODUCTION: In peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, the peritoneal membrane is affected by glucose-based solutions used as peritoneal dialysate fluids. This exposure leads to changes of the membrane which may eventually culminate in fibrosis and method failure. In vitro or animal studies demonstrated that glucose transporters are upregulated upon exposure to these solutions. Expression studies of glucose transporters in human peritoneum have not been reported yet. METHODS: Expression of SGLT-2, GLUT1, and GLUT3 in human peritoneal biopsies was analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction a

Has the formation of disinfection by-products been overestimated? Membrane leakage from syringe filter heads serves as unexpected precursors.

Syringe filters are widely used for sample pretreatments in laboratories. This study found that, surprisingly, these filters can leak dissolved organic carbon (DOC) that can potentially serve as precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Nine common types of syringe filters were assessed. The results showed that the DOC of ultrapure water increased after syringe filtration. The DOC shed from filter membranes was characterized, whose spectra showed that the main compounds exhibited a low apparent molecular weight. Five classes of DBPs were investigated including trihalomethanes, haloacetald

Mechanical Signature of Red Blood Cells Flowing Out of a Microfluidic Constriction Is Impacted by Membrane Elasticity, Cell Surface-to-Volume Ratio and Diseases.

Despite the fact that Red Blood Cells (RBCs) have been intensively studied in the past 50 years to characterize mechanical phenotypes associated with both healthy and pathological states, only ektacytometry (i.e., laser diffractometry) is currently used by hematologists to screen for RBC membrane disorders. Therefore, the development of new diagnostic tools able to perform analysis at the scale of a single cell, over a statistically relevant population, would provide important complementary information. But these new diagnostic tools would have to be able to discriminate between different diso

How the central domain of dystrophin acts to bridge F-actin to sarcolemmal lipids.

Dystrophin is a large intracellular protein that prevents sarcolemmal ruptures by providing a mechanical link between the intracellular actin cytoskeleton and the transmembrane dystroglycan complex. Dystrophin deficiency leads to the severe muscle wasting disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the milder allelic variant, Becker Muscular Dystrophy (DMD and BMD). Previous work has shown that concomitant interaction of the actin binding domain 2 (ABD2) comprising spectrin like repeats 11 to 15 (R11-15) of the central domain of dystrophin, with both actin and membrane lipids, can greatly increase
