Does the millennial generation of women experience more mental illness than their mothers?

BACKGROUND: There is concern that rates of mental disorders may be increasing although findings disagree. Using an innovative design with a daughter-mother data set we assess whether there has been a generational increase in lifetime ever rates of major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced prior to 30 years of age. METHODS: Pregnant women were recruited during 1981-1983 and administered the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) at the 27-year follow-up (2008-11). Offspring were administered the C

Future-Oriented Positive Mental Imagery Reduces Anxiety for Exposure to Public Speaking.

Exposure therapy is the recommended treatment for anxiety disorders, but many anxious individuals are unwilling to expose themselves to feared situations. Episodic simulation of future situations contributes to adaptive emotion regulation and motivates behavior. This study investigated whether future-oriented positive mental imagery reduces anticipatory anxiety and distress during exposure, and increases exposure willingness and duration. Forty-three individuals with moderate public speaking anxiety were randomized to a standardized positive mental imagery exercise about future public speaking

Effects of Stress and Nativity on Maternal Antenatal Substance Use and Postnatal Mental Disorders.

Background: Maternal substance use and common mental disorders (CMDs) during or after pregnancy can lead to negative health outcomes among mothers and infants. We examined whether nativity (US-born versus foreign-born) and stress levels during pregnancy were associated with antenatal substance use and postnatal CMDs. Methods: We analyzed the Boston Birth Cohort, a racially diverse cohort recruited at birth with rolling enrollment since 1998. Information on antenatal substance use (tobacco and/or alcohol use) was obtained using an in-person postpartum questionnaire (n = 6,514). Information on p

[Treatment of disorders of emotion regulation in the Adolescents Center at the Central Intitute of Mental Health].

Severe disorders of emotion regulation, e.g. in the context of mental illnesses, such as borderline disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and complex posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), often begin in childhood and adolescence and influence the psychosocial development of those affected, often into adulthood. Professional treatment therefore often requires longer term planning, if possible from a single source. The sectorized structure of the current psychiatric healthcare system, however, makes this process more difficult or is even a hindrance and promotes high hospita

Adverse childhood experiences and child mental health: an electronic birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are negatively associated with a range of child health outcomes. In this study, we explored associations between five individual ACEs and child mental health diagnoses or symptoms. ACEs included living with someone who had an alcohol-related problem, common mental health disorder or serious mental illness, or experienced victimisation or death of a household member. METHODS: We analysed data from a population-level electronic cohort of children in Wales, UK, (N = 191,035) between the years of 1998 and 2012. We used Cox regression with discrete

Mental health status and quality of life in elderly patients with coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among elderly individuals. Patients with CHD are at high risk for mental health disorders, and psychological issues may affect the quality of life (QoL) of these patients. Nevertheless, there is little evidence regarding the psychological issues and QoL of patients with CHD among the elderly population. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between comorbidities and mental status as well as QoL among elderly patients with CHD. METHODS: Overall, 216 patients were included in this cross-sectional

The Role of Implementation Science in Reducing Sexual and Gender Minority Mental Health Disparities.

Owing to multiple and multilevel ecological factors, sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations exhibit persistent mental health disparities. SGM populations are also at increased risk for never being reached by evidence-based mental health care in real-world settings, which is essential for reducing these disparities. To be maximally effective in reducing these disparities, we must strive to bring our research findings into routine clinical care quickly. Implementation science can help SGM health researchers achieve this goal. This perspective outlines how researchers can use implementation

Detecting signs of deterioration in young patients with serious mental illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Serious mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder first develop between ages 14 and 25. Once diagnosed, young peoples' health can deteriorate, and it is therefore vital to detect this early to prevent severe outcomes including hospitalisations and deaths by suicide. The main study aim is to describe and discuss observational studies that examine signs of deterioration in young patients with SMI. METHODS: A systematic review guided by the published protocol was conducted. Cumulative Index to Nursing and allied Health Literature (CINAHL), MEDLINE, Embase, Psy

Community participation as a predictor of depressive symptoms among individuals with serious mental illnesses.

BACKGROUND: People with serious mental illnesses have elevated levels of depressive symptoms. Limited engagement in meaningful activities, such as work, social interactions, volunteering, and participation in faith, are one plausible explanation for this. Increased community participation over time may be associated with decreased depressive symptoms. AIM: Examine whether an increase in participation over time predicts a decrease in depression after controlling for depression at the baseline. METHODS: Participants were 183 adults with schizophrenia spectrum, bipolar disorder, or major depres

The Model for Understanding Inpatient Aggression: A Version for Mental Health Nurses Working in Prisons.

Preventing and managing aggression remains an important and challenging task for mental health nurses. Despite the concern, there is a dearth of frameworks to assist practice and inform assessment and intervention related to aggression, for forensic mental health nurses working in prisons. This paper presents a model for understanding aggression within prison mental health units. The model elucidates various personal and situational determinants of aggression. It offers a systematic framework for mental health nurses to investigate and understand aggression, to ultimately assist nurses to prov

COVID-19 Pandemic and Mental Health Status of Saudi Citizens Living Abroad.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health crisis associated with unprecedented levels of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic has been suggested to contribute to a great burden on global mental health. We assumed that individuals in quarantine outside their home country would be more vulnerable to developing mental health disorders during the current pandemic and might face difficulties in accessing mental health services. AIM: To explore the degree of association between the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health status of Saudi citizens living abroad. OBJECTIVES

Absconding from Public Mental Health Inpatient Units - Who Does it, and why?

Patients who abscond from acute inpatient psychiatric wards put themselves and others at risks of variable nature and severity. There is a limited understanding of what motivates them to do so. The research in this area is limited and predominantly outdated. To better understand the characteristics, patterns and predictors of people who abscond from hospital, this study compared absconding and non-absconding patients in a tertiary public hospital. Demographic and clinical characteristics were audited for patients who absconded (n = 159) and who did not abscond (n = 100) throughout a 2-year per

Supporting prisoners with mental health needs in the transition to RESETtle in the community: the RESET study.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is linked to poor mental health and an increased likelihood of offending. People often lose accommodation when they enter prison and struggle to find accommodation upon release leading to an increased likelihood of relapse and reoffending. The RESET intervention was developed to support prisoners with mental health needs for 12 weeks after release to coordinate their transition into the community and obtaining secure housing. METHODS: The primary objective of the study was to assess the participants housing situation. A prospective cohort design followed up 62 prisone

Social Contact: Next Steps in an Effective Strategy to Mitigate the Stigma of Mental Illness.

People living with mental illnesses and their families may conceal their conditions to avoid prejudice and discrimination. Stigma often prevents people from receiving adequate health care and other social support services which could exacerbate social and health consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, substance use, and compulsory hospitalization. In this paper, we discuss social contact as a promising anti-stigma strategy for enhancing social interactions among people with mental illnesses, their families, and those without mental illnesses. In particularly, we consider next steps fo
