Intestinal congestion-driven gut dysbiosis: a cross-disease hemodynamic mechanism in liver cirrhosis and heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal congestion is a common pathophysiological feature of both liver cirrhosis and heart failure (HF). This study aimed to investigate whether intestinal congestion induces similar gut microbiota and metabolite alterations under both conditions, and to identify key microbial and metabolic signatures. METHODS: We analyzed 117 cirrhosis patients (uncomplicated cirrhosis, cirrhosis with hepatocellular carcinoma, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and liver transplantation), 75 HF patients, and 31 healthy controls (CG). We performed 16S rRNA sequencing on all samples

Antibiotic resistance profile and molecular mechanism of enterococci in traditional fermented yogurts.

Enterococci are present in traditional fermented foods, but their potential role as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance and virulence genes has raised concerns about food safety. To evaluate the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant enterococci in traditional fermented yogurt, microbial sequencing and culture methods were used to analyze the microbiota and Enterococcus composition in a total of 75 yogurts from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang, China). Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus durans were the predominant enterococcal species and belonged to 20 and 5 biotypes, respectively, a

Quantitative study of ESBL and carbapenemase producers in wastewater treatment plants in Seville, Spain: a culture-based detection analysis of raw and treated water.

Antibiotics can modify populations of multidrug-resistant microorganism (MDRO) in urban wastewater. Our objectives were to quantify the differences in MDR Gram-negative bacteria between influents and effluents of WWTPs of a Spanish city and to evaluate the influence of human antibiotic prescriptions, as well as the persistence of these bacteria after treatment and their genetic relatedness to clinical isolates. The mean count of ESBL producers and carbapenemase producers were 3.77 and 2.74 log 10 CFU/ml, respectively. The reduction achieved by water treatment of ESBL-producing organisms was 1.

The gut microbiome associated with LGI1-antibody encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune encephalitis is a cause of brain inflammation characterized by auto-antibodies, which target cell surface neuronal proteins and lead to neuronal dysfunction. The most common form is associated with auto-antibodies to leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) protein, the presentation of which includes frequent focal seizures. The exact cause of these auto-antibodies remains unknown, but established predispositions include overrepresented human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles. Yet, these HLA alleles are themselves common in the healthy ancestry-matched population. One poten

Linking microbial community composition, microbial biomass and extracellular polymeric substances to organic matter lability gradients in sediments of the tidal Elbe River.

The port of Hamburg represents a transition zone between upstream, shallow regions of high net primary production and downstream deep and more turbulent waters in the tidal Elbe River in northwestern Germany. Correspondingly, strong gradients of degradable organic matter (OM) on a distance of a few river kilometers had been identified. This study links microbial community composition using 16S metagenomic amplicons and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) composition to the observed gradients of sediment OM lability. It was hypothesized that lability gradients caused by higher concentratio

Novel Substitutes of Phthalate Esters (PAEs) Promote the Propagation of Antibiotic Resistance Genes via Ferroptosis: Implication for the Environmental Safety Evaluation of PAE Substitutes.

The horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) has become a major threat to global public health. Recent studies have found that ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation and glutathione depletion, may play a critical role in the dissemination of ARGs among environmental microbes. Here, we demonstrated for the first time that phthalate esters (PAEs) and their substitutes significantly enhanced plasmid conjugation by triggering ferroptosis-related pathways. Classical ferroptosis-associated responses, including the hyperpolariz

Overlooked risk of antibiotic resistance genes in typical landfill plumes and their influencing factors.

Landfills are one of the primary reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Previous studies always focus on the distribution of ARGs in landfill leachate, while the distribution of ARGs in groundwater around the landfill and the corresponding influencing factors are always overlooked. In this study, seven groundwater samples and one leachate sample were collected from a typical landfill in Yueqing, China. Sulfonamide was the most abundant antibiotic in groundwater with its concentration of 1.2-23.1 ng L-1. Metagenomic analysis revealed 13 major types and 88 subtypes of antibiotic resis

Detection of Neorickettsia risticii in antemortem fecal and postmortem fetal samples, with genomic insights from complete genome sequencing of a strain recovered from an aborted equine fetus.

Neorickettsia risticii (N. risticii) is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that causes Potomac horse fever (PHF), a disease clinically characterized by diarrhea, pyrexia, and laminitis in horses. Although sporadic reports of N. risticii infection have been linked to abortion in mares, a detailed retrospective study, including genomic analysis of the pathogen from an aborted fetus, has not been published. This study examined 546 fecal samples from clinically ill horses (January 1, 2017-December 31, 2024) and 833 colon samples from aborted equine fetuses (September 20, 2018-December 31, 2024)
