Transdiscal L5-S1 screws for the fixation of isthmic spondylolisthesis: a biomechanical evaluation.

The current study is a biomechanical study using a cadaveric model of L5-S1 spondylolisthesis. The purpose of the current study was to compare, in a cadaveric model of simulated L5-S1 spondylolisthesis, the biomechanical stiffness of transdiscal fixation with traditional pedicle screw fixation, and transdiscal fixation with combined interbody/pedicle screw fixation. The surgical management of L5-S1 spondylolisthesis is a challenge because of the difficulties in achieving a reliable arthrodesis in the face of high mechanical forces. A method of lumbosacral fixation that has been used successful

Multivariate Genome-Wide Analysis Delineates Shared Genetic Determinants Across Periodontal and Oral Microbial Phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis affects approximately 10% of the global population, posing a serious threat to tooth retention and quality of life. The disease emerges from bidirectional host-microbiome interactions that can shift from homeostasis to dysbiosis and chronic inflammation, yet conventional single-phenotype analyses cannot resolve pleiotropic loci acting across interrelated periodontal and microbial traits. We aimed to jointly model the shared genetic structure of six periodontitis-related phenotypes and to prioritise pleiotropic loci with translational relevance. METHODS AND MATERIALS:

Reconsidering indoor radon monitoring strategies in Romanian medical buildings: a data-driven perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Medical buildings are complex indoor environments with heterogeneous room functions, occupancy patterns and HVAC (especially ventilation) requirements. Although radon monitoring methodologies are applied across workplaces, healthcare facilities differ from residential buildings in air exchange, operational schedules and functional zoning. This study investigated indoor radon concentration in Romanian medical buildings and assessed whether current monitoring assumptions, including residential-derived seasonal correction factors, adequately reflect observed exposure patterns. Gingival bleeding and lower number of natural teeth are predictive factors of low muscle strength in obese adults: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a systemic chronic disease associated with age-related skeletal muscle weakness, particularly in older adults. Chronic oral diseases share risk factors with critical non-communicable, chronic systemic diseases, including obesity. Poor oral health, increased fat mass, and muscle weakness are linked to adverse health outcomes and substantial economic burdens worldwide. This study developed predictive models of skeletal muscle strength (SMS) based on demographic characteristics, anthropometric and body composition measurements, blood biochemical examinations, and oral hea

Enhancing Silver Diamine Fluoride Treatment: The Role of Zinc in Reducing Discoloration and Maintaining Antimicrobial Efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Silver diammine fluoride (SDF; often incorrectly referred to as silver diamine fluoride in the literature) is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for dental caries; however, its widespread adoption is hindered by significant black discoloration of treated dentin. Zinc, known for its antimicrobial properties and potential interactions with silver compounds, may offer a novel approach to reducing SDF-induced staining while preserving its cariostatic effects. This laboratory study investigated the impact of a zinc pretreatment followed by SDF application on dentin discolorati

Interventions for replacing missing teeth: antibiotic prophylaxis for dental implant placement without bone augmentation procedures.

RATIONALE: Some dental implant failures may result from bacterial contamination at implant insertion, and biomaterial-related infections are difficult to treat. Antibiotic prophylaxis is generally indicated for patients at risk of infective endocarditis or with reduced host response, surgery at infected sites, extensive or prolonged procedures, or implantation of large foreign materials. Various prophylactic regimens, including short-term protocols, have been proposed to reduce post-implant infections. However, concerns about adverse events and antibiotic resistance make prophylactic antibioti

A new knee surgery model in rats to evaluate functional measures of postoperative pain.

INTRODUCTION: With the increase in the number of total knee surgeries being performed, postoperative analgesic management remains a challenge. We used a new animal knee surgery model to characterize pain-related behavior in the rat, and its therapeutic modulation with systemic and intrathecal drug treatment. METHODS: Rats were anesthetized with isoflurane and an incision was made over the left knee to expose the patella tendon. The tendon was reflected aside and a 1.4-mm diameter, 0.5 mm deep hole was drilled in both the femur and tibia at 2 mm above and below the knee joint, respectively. Th

PLA2G7-Mediated Pro-Inflammatory Activation of Lipid-Associated Macrophages Drives Pulpitis.

AIM: Pulpitis is a common and painful disease characterised by complex and dynamic immune responses and may lead to irreversible tissue damage or tooth loss. Macrophages act as key sentinels that exhibit differential metabolic reprogramming, tightly orchestrating the immune microenvironment. However, the specific metabolic mechanisms governing macrophage-driven inflammatory activation in pulpitis remain unclear. Here, we reveal a specific lipid metabolism-driven immune pathway within macrophages in pulpitis. METHODOLOGY: An integrative analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), lipid

Xenogenous implanted dental follicle stem cells promote periodontal regeneration through inducing the N2 phenotype of neutrophils.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal tissue loss is the main reason for tooth mobility and loss caused by periodontal disease. Dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs) have significant therapeutic potential in periodontal regeneration, which maybe mainly depends on their potent immunomodulatory capacity. Consequently, this study aims to elucidate the impact of implanted xenogenous DFSCs on innate immune responses during early and late stages in the periodontal defect repair period. METHODS: To trace and investigate the immunomodulation mechanisms of DFSCs in vivo, DFSCs were engineered (E-DFSCs) using lentivira
