Coughs and sneezes spread diseases: an empirical study of absenteeism and infectious illness.

This paper incorporates some theoretical ideas from the study of the epidemiology of infectious illness into a model of worker absence. The paper then seeks to quantify such infection effects by examining a personnel dataset which allows us to track daily absence decisions of a group of industrial workers employed in the same factory. We find significant effects of our measure of sickness in the (rest of the) workforce on the absence probabilities of individual workers, and offer a suggestion on how this might be used by managers to gauge the extent of illness transmission within the workplace

The empirical correlation between size and two-photon absorption cross section of CdSe and CdTe quantum dots.

The tuning of CdSe quantum dot (QDs) sizes, and consequently their corresponding two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section, has been systematically investigated. As the size (diameter) of the quantum dots increases, the TPA cross section is found to be empirically related via a power-law proportionality of 3.5+/-0.5 and 5.6+/-0.7 to the diameters of CdSe and CdTe QDs, respectively. The results are tentatively rationalized via a theoretical model of two-photon excitation properties in a system incorporating excitons and defects.

Antithrombotic activity of the superoxide dismutase-chondroitin sulfate complexes in a rat model of arterial injury.

Individual antithrombotic activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and sodium chondroitin sulfate (CHS) as well as the activities of covalent and noncovalent complexes of SOD with CHS were compared in a rat model of arterial thrombosis induced by ferrous chloride. Covalent conjugate of SOD with CHS exerted the most potent antithrombotic effect, which was associated with adsorption of the conjugate on the glycocalyx of the vascular wall cells and stability of the covalent bond between CHS and SOD subunits. Theoretical and practical directions in the investigation of SOD and CHS preparations are

Theoretical aspects of multiple deconvolution analysis for quantification of left to right cardiac shunts.

A new method for quantification of left to right cardiac shunts by Bourguignon et al based on multiple deconvolution analysis is critically analysed within the framework of a simple mathematical model. Underlying assumptions are explicitly stated and their validity discussed. It turns out that some reinterpretation of the method is necessary. Using the same ideas as in multiple deconvolution analysis, a new relation for the pulmonary to systemic flow ratio is proposed on a theoretical basis. This technique may be useful when diagnosing left to right cardiac shunts with radiocardiographic metho

Biosocial perspectives on the development of the proceptive, acceptive and conceptive phases of eroticism.

The absence of an interdisciplinary science of sexology has resulted in sexuality being narrowly defined by the particular ideology of the various scientific disciplines. This review presents a theoretical model to integrate the interdisciplinary data related to the development of the three phases of eroticism. A biosocial integration of the multiple aspects of eroticism will hopefully generate research and psychotherapeutic innovations not plagued by mind-body dichotomization. The emphasis of this paper is on the solicitation, attraction and pair-bonding phase of eroticism, since this has bee

Digital twin for ocular hemodynamics: Combining physiology-based modeling and machine learning for personalized glaucoma care.

This work investigated the combined effects of intraocular pressure (IOP) and blood pressure (BP) on retinal hemodynamics and glaucoma progression using a novel, physiology-based digital twin for ocular hemodynamics (DT-OH). The DT-OH integrates a mathematical model of ocular physiology with machine learning to simulate retinal blood flow dynamics based on individualized IOP and BP inputs. The DT-OH was applied to clinical data from the Indianapolis Glaucoma Progression Study (IGPS) to characterize how IOP and BP jointly influence retinal hemodynamics and their association with glaucoma progre

Dynamic simulation and intelligent control technology for cutting head load of coal mine roadheader.

Due to the complex geological conditions of coal-rock, the cutting head of coal mine excavation machines experiences severe fluctuations in loads, making it difficult for existing macroscopic controls to accurately capture the microscopic loads on the cutting pick. Therefore, a dynamic simulation and intelligent control model for the cutting head load of an adaptive roadheader based on multi-scale coupled simulation is developed. The study first modifies the classical load model through finite element method to accurately simulate the microscopic interaction between the cutting pick and the ro

Hepatitis C virus transmission among people who inject drugs in rural United States: mathematical modeling study using stochastic agent-based network simulation.

People who inject drugs (PWID) account for the majority of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections in the United States. The injection-equipment-sharing network likely plays an important role in shaping the dynamics of HCV transmission. Recognizing the emerging HCV epidemic in rural communities, we developed an agent-based network simulation model of HCV transmission via injection equipment sharing and used data on rural PWID networks to inform model parameterization and calibration. We then simulated an array of networks that varied key network properties to understand their impact on the magnitud

Modelling the epidemic dynamics of HPV among women in China and optimization of ongoing cervical cancer elimination strategies.

BACKGROUND: The infection of high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) and related cervical cancer have greatly threatened women's health. However, the benefits of ongoing strategies in China remains unclear. Insufficient vaccine supply and excessive screening workload have hindered the widespread implementation of HPV immunization plans. METHODS: We constructed stratified mathematical models to simulate the transmission of hr-HPV among women under ongoing public health strategies, and calculated the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR) to compare the health-economics benefits among different

Improved stoichiometric model for megavoltage computed tomography number conversion and dose calculation within the TomoTherapy delivery system.

PURPOSE: This study investigated a novel stoichiometric computed tomography (CT) number calibration (SCC) model for megavoltage CT (MVCT). This model was specifically designed to convert CT numbers to mass densities (MDs) for dose calculations when using the TomoTherapy MVCT radiotherapy delivery system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MVCT-SCC model extended the conventional SCC model originally developed for kilovoltage CT by incorporating additional parameters to account for pair production and water-equivalent CT number corrections, which are specific to MVCT applications. The accuracy of the

Optimal bus bridging service for urban rail transit disruptions with stochastic passenger demand.

Disruptions in urban rail transit (URT) systems can significantly impact operational efficiency, while well-designed bus bridging service (BBS) can effectively mitigate such effects. To address the surge in travel demand caused by disruptions, this study comprehensively considers alternative transportation modes that affected passengers may adopt (including taxis, shared bicycles, bridging buses, and walking), aiming to minimize both the operational costs of bridging buses and the total travel time of passengers. A travel choice model based on the random regret minimization (RRM) theory is dev

A Mathematical Model of Cellular Aggregation Predicts Patterns of Tau Accumulation in Neurodegenerative Disease.

Protein aggregates are a hallmark of neurodegenerative disease, yet the molecular processes that control their appearance remain incompletely characterized. In particular, it is unknown to what degree the development of aggregates in one cell is triggered by nearby aggregate-containing cells, as opposed to proceeding cell-autonomously. Here, a minimal, bottom-up computational model is developed that is characterized by just two parameters: the relative rate of cell autonomous and cell-to-cell triggers of aggregation and a length scale of cell-to-cell interactions. Its applicability is demonstr

Epidemiological impact of three major respiratory coronavirus epidemics on influenza transmission: a multicountry analysis using surveillance data and mathematical modelling.

BACKGROUND: With the acceleration of globalisation and the increasing frequency of international exchanges, the risk of cross-border transmission of emerging respiratory infectious diseases (ERIDs) has significantly increased. Since the year 2002, epidemics of SARS, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and COVID-19 have exemplified this trend. These epidemics have impacted the prevalence and transmission of traditional respiratory infectious diseases (RIDs), such as influenza, which share similar transmission routes and control measures. To better explore the impact of ERIDs epidemics on in

Capturing the implications of residential segregation for the dynamics of infectious disease transmission.

PURPOSE: Residential segregation is linked to racial and socioeconomic inequity in outcomes for numerous infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, STIs, and tuberculosis. Despite the importance of segregation as a driver of infection inequity, there are few mathematical models to inform our understanding of these dynamics. METHODS: We developed a transmission model including mechanistic relationships between residential segregation and infection inequity. We conceptualize segregation as a fundamental social cause of infection inequity that jointly impacts contact patterns and vulnerability

Are we doing our best to contain the spread of West Nile virus? Evaluating intervention efficacy through mathematical modelling.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging vector-borne pathogen that is becoming increasingly prevalent in temperate regions. The development of effective intervention strategies is crucial for limiting its spread; however, the adaptability and ubiquity of mosquitoes, combined with the complexity of the WNV transmission cycle, continue to hinder its eradication. METHODS: This study employs a deterministic compartmental model to evaluate the effectiveness of ten intervention strategies targeting either the mosquito (vector) or avian (host) population in the Lombardy region of Italy. Factors driving adolescent tuberculosis incidence by age and sex in 30 high-tuberculosis burden countries: a mathematical modelling study.

INTRODUCTION: During adolescence, tuberculosis incidence rises, with a greater increase in males compared with females. Tuberculosis notifications and estimates infrequently disaggregate adolescent age groups. Moreover, the factors that drive the increases in overall incidence and the male-to-female (MF) ratio remain unclear. METHODS: We constructed a mechanistic model to estimate cumulative Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis disease incidence in the WHO's 30 high-tuberculosis burden countries (HBCs), which represent 86%-90% of global tuberculosis incidence. We derived infe

Nonpharmacological intervention therapies for dementia: potential break-even intervention price and savings for selected risk factors in the European healthcare system.

BACKGROUND: New effective treatments for dementia are lacking, and early prevention focusing on risk factors of dementia is important. Non-pharmacological intervention therapies aimed at these factors may provide a valuable tool for reducing the incidence of dementia. This study focused on the development of a mathematical model to predict the number of individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, specifically Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, vascular dementia, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Scenarios for non-pharmacological intervention therapies based on risk factor reduction we

A mathematical model for temporal cerebral blood flow response to acetazolamide evaluated in patients with Moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: Paired cerebral blood flow (CBF) measurement is usually acquired before and after vasoactive stimulus to estimate cerebrovascular reserve (CVR). However, CVR may be confounded because of variations in time-to-maximum CBF response (tmax) following acetazolamide injection. With a mathematical model, CVR can be calculated insensitive to variations in tmax, and a model offers the possibility to calculate additional model-derived parameters. A model that describes the temporal CBF response following a vasodilating acetazolamide injection is proposed and evaluated. METHODS: A bi-exponen

Tropical Atlantic multidecadal variability is dominated by external forcing.

The tropical Atlantic climate is characterized by prominent and correlated multidecadal variability in Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), Sahel rainfall and hurricane activity1-4. Owing to uncertainties in both the models and the observations, the origin of the physical relationships among these systems has remained controversial3-7. Here we show that the cross-equatorial gradient in tropical Atlantic SSTs-largely driven by radiative perturbations associated with anthropogenic emissions and volcanic aerosols since 19503,7-is a key determinant of Atlantic hurricane formation and Sahel ra
