A buccal bifurcation cyst (BBC) is a rarely occurring, distinct lesion that is limited exclusively to the buccal bifurcation area of mandibular first and second molars in children and adolescents. A definitive diagnosis is formulated based on specific clinical and radiographic features. Management of such cysts depends on the presence of symptoms and the size of the lesion. This case report details the common features of a BBC in a 13-year-old patient and outlines the surgical approach to managing the cystic entity. The importance of a comprehensive clinical examination and appropriate supplem

Defects in mandible growth are of undoubted interest for practical healthcare. During the diagnosis, for a more accurate diagnosis and differential diagnosis, it is necessary to understand the criteria for the norm and pathology of diseases of the jaw bones. Often in the body of the mandible at the level of the lower molars, slightly below the maxillofacial line, defects are detected in the form of a depression of the cortical layer towards the unchanged buccal cortical plate. These defects, being the clinical norm, need to be differentiated with many tumor diseases of the maxillofacial region

BACKGROUND: Pathological root resorption affects permanent teeth and is usually triggered by infectious-inflammatory stimuli and/or dental trauma. Periodontitis and traumatic occlusion have been reported as possible causative factors of root resorptions, whilst the impact of systemic diseases is less well understood. This case highlights the need for consideration of multiple risk factors, especially when presenting in combination.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 62-year-old South Asian female presented with unstable Stage IV Grade C periodontitis, poor oral hygiene and multiple autoimmune conditions

Thyroid gland dysfunctions can adversely affect patients' systemic health and well-being. Thyroid disease is the most common endocrine disorder. Recognizing early signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism is crucial in the early diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Oral health care providers must obtain comprehensive medical records from patients with hypothyroidism before dental treatments.

The identification of teeth in 3D medical images can be a first step for victim identification from scant remains, for comparison of ante- and postmortem images or for other forensic investigations. We evaluate the performance of a tooth detection approach on mandibles with missing parts or pathologies based on statistical shape models. The proposed approach relies on a shape model that has been built from the full lower jaw, including the mandible and teeth. The model is fitted to the target, resulting in a reconstruction, in addition to a label map that indicates the presence or absence of t

INTRODUCTION: Oligodontia is a serious developmental dental anomaly that requires long-term multidisciplinary treatment, but its clinical characteristics are not well understood because it is rare. This study evaluated the mesiodistal angulation and developmental stages of unerupted mandibular second premolars (MnP2s) in orthodontic patients with nonsyndromic oligodontia.
METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with oligodontia with at least 1 unerupted MnP2 in Demirjian's developmental stages between D and G were selected. Age- and sex-matched patients without tooth agenesis, excluding third molars,

OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness and side effects of miniscrew-assisted rapid maxillary expansion (MARME) with conventional rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in the treatment of transverse maxillary deficiency.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We searched in the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Central databases. The quality of included RCTs was evaluated using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. The primary outcome was the extent of dentoskeletal expansion achieved. Secondary outcomes were the dental and periodon

UNLABELLED: A posterior crossbite is an occlusion disorder that occurs in the transverse plane. It occurs when the buccal cusps of the upper premolars and molars engage lingually with the buccal cusps of the lower teeth. It can be unilateral or bilateral (involving one or more teeth) in the primary, mixed, or permanent dentition. A crossbite may appear in early dentition stages and it can be dental or functional. It can lead to skeletal crossbite in mixed dentition. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The selected sample included 204 patients in growing

Tooth resorption is either a physiological or a pathological process resulting in loss of dentin and/or cementum. It may also be associated with bone loss. Currently there is no universal classification for the different types of tooth resorption. This lack of a universal classification leads to both confusion amongst practitioners and poor understanding of the resorptive processes occurring in teeth which can result in incorrect/inappropriate diagnoses and mis-management. When developing a classification of diseases and/or conditions that occur within the body, several criteria should be foll

Potential complications related to pterygomaxillary disjunction have been widely described in the literature, most of them being due to the inaccurate and blind approach involved. The present study used preoperative virtual planning to establish a surgical cutting guide for pterygomaxillary osteotomy. It was placed in the maxillary tuberosity supported by molars, and a flapless vertical osteotomy was performed with a piezoelectric saw. Then, maxillary down-fracture was performed with slight pressure through an anterior approach. The use of the surgical guide added accuracy and predictability t

OBJECTIVE: Early loss of primary teeth due to caries can cause temporary or permanent problems, such as occlusion disorders, aesthetic problems, nutritional problems, abnormal habits, and speech disorders. Although the development of restorative materials has led to significant improvements, failures are still frequent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the success rates of zirconia crowns compared to other crowns for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth with excessive loss of material.
METHODS: A total of 45 teeth of patients aged under 10 years, including primary molars a

A higher chance of carrying out a successful full pulpotomy may depend on whether the coronal restoration can be completed within a single appointment. The development of chairside CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing) technology has made it possible to carry out indirect restoration of endodontically treated teeth in a single session. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term outcome of a full pulpotomy with Biodentine™ immediately covered with a chairside CAD/CAM endocrown on teeth affected by pulpitis and deep carious lesions. The investigation involved a cohort of 30 molars th

In their daily practice, orthodontists and pedo- dontists have a common aim which is to ensure a functional establishment of the permanent denture. Due to the increase of eruption defects/failures with no clear obstacles, the doctor may encounter some difficulties to elaborate a diagnosis or even feels helpless when in need to define and put in motion a correct therapeutic strategy. The primary failure of eruption (PFE) is an extensively studied disease that has to be distinguished from an ankylosis during the diagnosis to improve the patient care. A thorough research of scientific literature

Pathological link between teeth and maxillary sinus. Pathological relationship between the teeth and the maxillary sinus can be explained by their embryological and anatomical relationships. The floor is centered by the apex of antral teeth: premolars and first molars. Any dental disease process may have sinus consequences. Dental caries are the best example. Iatrogenic pathology, including preimplant surgery and benign or malignant tumors are also responsible for sinusitis. Therapeutic for every etiology avoids the complications and sequelae whose forensic incidence remains low.

The dentition of 116 patients with a non-syndromic form of oligodontia was characterized. For this purpose use was made of the so-called Tooth Agenesis Code (TAC), with which the various patterns of missing teeth can be indicated with a unique number. Oligodontia can present itself in very diverse ways. Only 3 patterns were seen (2 times) among these 116 patients. Considered per quadrant, in the upper jaw, on the one hand, agenesis of both premolars and the lateral incisor was most common and, on the other, the absence of all teeth except the central incisor and the first molar. In the lower j
