Could minor neurological dysfunction be a type of non-cerebral palsy motor impairment?

Non-cerebral palsy motor impairments have been increasing over time, especially in preterm-born children, with a variety of labels, including, but not limited to, developmental coordination disorder and minor neurological dysfunction. They may not only negatively affect the child in their daily life activities, but are also associated with cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disorders, as well as decreased academic performance. Since there is a paucity of literature on non-cerebral palsy motor impairment, the main objective of the present study is to assess minor neurological dysfunction in

Timing of Speech in Brain and Glottis and the Feedback Delay Problem in Motor Control.

To learn complex motor skills, an organism must be able to assign sensory feedback events to the actions that caused them. This matching problem would be simple if motor neuron output led to sensory feedback with a fixed, predictable lag. However, nonlinear dynamics in the brain and the body's periphery can decouple the timing of critical events from that of the motor output which caused them. During human speech production, for example, phonation from the glottis (a sound source for speech) begins suddenly when subglottal pressure and laryngeal tension cross a sharp threshold (i.e., a bifurca

Alterations of sensorimotor predictive processes and their electrophysiological signatures in Tourette syndrome.

People with Tourette syndrome exhibit excessive motor actions known as tics. An aversive sensation called the premonitory urge often precedes these tics, leading to the conceptualization of Tourette syndrome as a sensorimotor disorder. In typical individuals, motor actions adapt flexibly to changes in the predictability of sensory cues. However, it remains unclear whether such sensorimotor predictions are altered in Tourette syndrome and, if so, which neural processes might underlie these changes. This study examined 30 individuals with Tourette syndrome and 30 control participants while recor

Levodopa improved different motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease by reducing the functional connectivity of specific thalamic subregions.

BACKGROUND: The thalamus is an important relay station for the motor circuit of human. Levodopa can reverse the clinical manifestations by modulating the function of motor circuits, but its detailed mechanisms are still not fully understood. We aimed to explore (1) the mechanism by which levodopa modulates the functional connectivity (FC) in the subregions of the thalamus; (2) the relationship between the changed FC and the improvement of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI was used to scan 36 PD patients and 37 healthy controls. The FC b

Characteristics of frailty phenotype in Chinese nursing home population and significance of motor function indicators in frailty assessment.

The objectives of this study were to analyze the distribution characteristics of frailty phenotypes in older adults of Chinese nursing homes, and to compare some motor function characteristics of older adults in nursing homes between frailty and non-frailty, to determine which motor function and frailty are related. This cross-sectional study included 177 older adults living in nursing homes. Frailty was diagnosed by Fried's phenotype, and motor function assessment characteristics (including muscle tone, ROM, and balance) were also evaluated. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were pe

Effective Connectivity in Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Neuropathic Pain.

AIM: The aim of this study was to differentiate the effects of spinal cord injury (SCI) and central neuropathic pain (CNP) on effective connectivity during motor imagery of legs, where CNP is typically experienced. METHODS: Multichannel EEG was recorded during motor imagery of the legs in 3 groups of people: able-bodied (N = 10), SCI with existing CNP (N = 10), and SCI with no CNP (N = 20). The last group was followed up for 6 months to check for the onset of CNP. Source reconstruction was performed to obtain cortical activity in 17 areas spanning sensorimotor regions and pain matrix. An enhanced therapeutic effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with antibody treatment in a primate model of spinal cord injury.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the primary motor cortex (MI) is expected to provide a therapeutic impact on spinal cord injury (SCI). On the other hand, treatment with antibody against repulsive guidance molecule-a (RGMa) has been shown to ameliorate motor deficits after SCI in rodents and primates. Facilitating activity of the corticospinal tract (CST) by rTMS following rewiring of CST fibers by anti-RGMa antibody treatment may exert an enhanced effect on motor recovery in a primate model of SCI. To address this issue, we examined whether such a combined therape

Glutamate, Glutamine, GABA and Oxidative Products in the Pons Following Cortical Injury and Their Role in Motor Functional Recovery.

Brain injury leads to an excitatory phase followed by an inhibitory phase in the brain. The clinical sequelae caused by cerebral injury seem to be a response to remote functional inhibition of cerebral nuclei located far from the motor cortex but anatomically related to the injury site. It appears that such functional inhibition is mediated by an increase in lipid peroxidation (LP). To test this hypothesis, we report data from 80 rats that were allocated to the following groups: the sham group (n = 40), in which rats received an intracortical infusion of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF); t

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proven to be able to modulate motor cortical plasticity might have potential as an alternative, adjunctive therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the efficacy of tDCS in PD is still uncertain. A disease animal model may be useful to clarify the existence of a treatment effect and to explore an effective therapeutic strategy using tDCS protocols. OBJECTIVE: The current study was designed to identify the comprehensive therapeutic effects of tDCS in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned PD rats. METHODS: Following early a

Persistent motor dysfunction despite homeostatic rescue of cerebellar morphogenesis in the Car8 waddles mutant mouse.

BACKGROUND: Purkinje cells play a central role in establishing the cerebellar circuit. Accordingly, disrupting Purkinje cell development impairs cerebellar morphogenesis and motor function. In the Car8wdl mouse model of hereditary ataxia, severe motor deficits arise despite the cerebellum overcoming initial defects in size and morphology. METHODS: To resolve how this compensation occurs, we asked how the loss of carbonic anhydrase 8 (CAR8), a regulator of IP3R1 Ca2+ signaling in Purkinje cells, alters cerebellar development in Car8wdl mice. Using a combination of histological, physiological,

Functional magnetic resonance imaging responses in CADASIL.

OBJECTIVES: The magnitude of the blood oxygen dependent level (BOLD) functional MRI (fMRI) response to visual stimulation is reduced in the small vessel disease cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), reflecting impaired vascular reactivity. We determined whether BOLD responses were reduced in another small vessel disease, cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL). METHODS: BOLD fMRI data were collected using a visual stimulus (contrast-reversing checkerboard) and motor task (finger-tapping). The amplitude of BOLD responses in the visual c

Motor neurone disease and military service: evidence from the Scottish Veterans Health Study.

OBJECTIVES: In 2003, it was reported that motor neurone disease was linked to military service in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. A large study in the US confirmed an association with military service but found no association with specific conflicts or length of service. Non-veteran studies have suggested an association with physical activity, smoking and other risk factors. We used data from the Scottish Veterans Health Study to investigate the association between motor neurone disease and military service in UK veterans. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 57,000 veterans born 1945-1985, and 173

Combined vitamin C and E deficiency induces motor defects in gulo(-/-)/SVCT2(+/-) mice.

OBJECTIVES: Key antioxidants, vitamins C and E, are necessary for normal brain development and neuronal function. In this study, we depleted both of these vitamins in two mouse models to determine if oxidative stress due to combined vitamin C and E dietary deficiency altered their neurological phenotype. The first model lacked both alleles for the Gulonolactone oxidase gene (Gulo(-/-)) and therefore was unable synthesize vitamin C. To obtain an additional cellular deficiency of vitamin C, the second model also lacked one allele for the cellular vitamin C transporter gene (Gulo(-/-)/SVCT2(+/-))

Primary motor cortex alterations in a compound heterozygous form of Unverricht-Lundborg disease (EPM1).

PURPOSE: Unverricht-Lundborg disease (EPM1) is the most common form of progressive myoclonus epilepsies. The genetic background is a homozygous dodecamer repeat extension mutation in the cystatin B (CSTB) gene. However, mutations occurring in a compound heterozygous form with the expansion mutation have also been reported. In Finland, we have found five EPM1 patients compound heterozygous for the dodecamer repeat expansion and the c.202C>T mutation in the CSTB gene (chEPM1). There are no previous clinical or neurophysiological studies on these patients. Thus, we aimed to characterize possible

Levodopa affects functional brain networks in Parkinsonian resting tremor.

Resting tremor in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with an oscillatory network comprising cortical as well as subcortical brain areas. To shed light on the effect of levodopa on these network interactions, we investigated 10 patients with tremor-dominant PD and reanalyzed data in 11 healthy volunteers mimicking PD resting tremor. To this end, we recorded surface electromyograms of forearm muscles and neuromagnetic activity using a 122-channel whole-head magnetometer (MEG). Measurements were performed after overnight withdrawal of levodopa (OFF) and 30 min after oral applicatio

Control of locomotion in marine mollusc Clione limacina. X. Effects of acetylcholine antagonists.

The swimming central pattern generator (CPG) of the pteropod mollusc Clione limacina is located in the pedal ganglia. It consists of three groups of interneurons (7, 8, and 12) which generate the rhythmical activity and determine the temporal pattern of the motor output, that is, phasic relations between different groups of motor neurons supplying dorsal (group 1 and 3 motor neurons) and ventral (group 2 and 4 motor neurons) muscles of the wings. In this work peripheral and central effects of acetylcholine (ACh) antagonists on the swimming control in C. limacina has been studied. The ACh antag

Pairing ampakine with brief hypoxia evokes phrenic neuroplasticity via a spinal NMDA receptor-mediated mechanism.

Brief hypoxic episodes drive neuroplasticity in animal models and humans. Pretreatment with an allosteric α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor (R) modulator ("ampakine") enables a single hypoxic exposure to induce sustained increases in phrenic motor activity ["phrenic motor facilitation" (pMF)]. Phrenic nerve activity was recorded in anesthetized rats to determine whether the ampakine-hypoxia (A-H) combination is unique in its ability to evoke pMF and to determine its underlying mechanisms. Pairing ampakine CX717 with brief moderate or severe hypercapnia failed
