Validity of large-deformation high dimensional brain mapping of the basal ganglia in adults with Tourette syndrome.

The basal ganglia and thalamus may play a critical role for behavioral inhibition mediated by prefrontal, parietal, temporal, and cingulate cortices. The cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical loop with projections from frontal cortex to striatum, then to globus pallidus or to substantia nigra pars reticulata, to thalamus and back to cortex, provides the anatomical substrate for this function. In-vivo neuroimaging studies have reported reduced volumes in the thalamus and basal ganglia in individuals with Tourette Syndrome (TS) when compared with healthy controls. However, patterns of neuroanat

Single-neuron stability during repeated reaching in macaque premotor cortex.

Some movements that animals and humans make are highly stereotyped, repeated with little variation. The patterns of neural activity associated with repeats of a movement may be highly similar, or the same movement may arise from different patterns of neural activity, if the brain exploits redundancies in the neural projections to muscles. We examined the stability of the relationship between neural activity and behavior. We asked whether the variability in neural activity that we observed during repeated reaching was consistent with a noisy but stable relationship, or with a changing relations

How position, velocity, and temporal information combine in the prospective control of catching: data and model.

The cerebral cortex contains circuitry for continuously computing properties of the environment and one's body, as well as relations among those properties. The success of complex perceptuomotor performances requires integrated, simultaneous use of such relational information. Ball catching is a good example as it involves reaching and grasping of visually pursued objects that move relative to the catcher. Although integrated neural control of catching has received sparse attention in the neuroscience literature, behavioral observations have led to the identification of control principles that

Comparison of the neuroprotective effect of clomethiazole, AR-R15896AR and NXY-059 in a primate model of stroke using histological and behavioural measures.

Three experimental neuroprotective agents (clomethiazole, AR-R15896AR and NXY-059) have recently been tested in a primate model of acute ischaemic stroke. As the experimental techniques used in all three studies were similar and the compounds were administered at clinically relevant doses, a comparative analysis of the functional benefits of these drug-treatments has now been performed. Furthermore a more detailed histological analysis of the neuroprotection afforded by the drugs has also been made. NXY-059 produced almost twice the degree of neuroprotection than that seen following clomethiaz

Brain metabolism in the cerebellum and visual cortex correlates with neuropsychological testing in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

This study was designed to measure glucose metabolic deficits in areas not typically recognized as abnormal on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) scans in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), and to correlate such findings with subtle neuropsychological impairment. FDG-PET scans on 38 AD patients with no clinical evidence of visual, spatial or motor deficits were acquired on the PET HEAD scanner 40 min following the intravenous administration of 115 microCi.kg-1 of FDG. All FDG-PET scans were analysed blindly using a region of interest (ROI) template with regions

[Guitarist's cramp: management with sensory re-education].

INTRODUCTION: Dystonia is defined as a sustained co-contraction of agonistic and antagonistic muscles that can cause twisting, twitching and abnormal postures. Occupational dystonias are included in a special group of pathologies that are secondary to a repeated effort related to the professional activity carried out by the sufferer, as can occur in guitarists, violinists and trumpet players, for example. Its pathophysiology includes descriptions of disorders affecting the peripheral and central nervous systems. Studies conducted in monkeys have shown that, through sensory stimulation, repeate

Speech production: Wernicke, Broca and beyond.

We investigated the brain systems engaged during propositional speech (PrSp) and two forms of non- propositional speech (NPrSp): counting and reciting overlearned nursery rhymes. Bilateral cerebral and cerebellar regions were involved in the motor act of articulation, irrespective of the type of speech. Three additional, left-lateralized regions, adjacent to the Sylvian sulcus, were activated in common: the most posterior part of the supratemporal plane, the lateral part of the pars opercularis in the posterior inferior frontal gyrus and the anterior insula. Therefore, both NPrSp and PrSp were

Increased activation of frontal areas during arm movement in idiopathic torsion dystonia.

Most positron emission tomography (PET) studies of regional cerebral function in idiopathic torsion dystonia (ITD) have failed to show abnormalities, but there have been few studies of the changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) that occur during movement in dystonia. Using PET, we have studied six patients with familial generalized ITD both at rest and while moving a joystick with the right hand. The patterns of CBF change obtained were compared with those in six age-matched control subjects. In the dystonia group, free selection of movement was associated with relative increases in rC

Alterations of brain levels of phosphoinositidase-C-linked Gq alpha/G11 alpha proteins and motor function in rats after cardiac arrest.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Phosphoinositidase-C-linked Gq alpha and G11 alpha proteins have only recently been characterized. Second messenger systems are known to be affected by hypoxia-ischemia. However, the effects of hypoxia-ischemia on the brain levels of Gq alpha and G11 alpha proteins are not known. Therefore, in the present studies, the effects of hypoxia-ischemia on Gq alpha and G11 alpha proteins in rats were investigated with quantitative immunoblot analysis. METHODS: Cardiac arrest was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by an intracardial injection of KCl. Resuscitation began 10 min

Dependence of sensorimotor cortex neuron activity on noradrenergic and serotoninergic transmission in unspecific thalamic nuclei.

Background and evoked impulse activity of sensorimotor cortex neurons and conditioned reflex of trained cats were changed by blockers of noradrenaline and serotonin receptors applied through chemitrodes to thalamic complex of the centrum medianum and nucleus parafascicularis neurons. Application of obzidan, an antagonist of beta-adrenoreceptor to the complex of the centrum medianum and nucleus parafascicularis induced an initial increase and following decrease of the motor activity of cats. After obzidan application conditioned reflex remained unchanged at the initial, excitatory phase and sta

[Clinical symptomatology of epileptic seizures of temporal origin].

Many discrepancies still exist in the description of clinical symptoms and signs attributable to a paroxysmal disorganization of temporal structures. They result from various methodological appraisals of clinical, electrophysiological and neuroradiological data concerning partial epilepsies. However a study of anatomo-electroclinical correlations in temporal seizures yield an easy pattern when the methods of elaboration, the criteria of validity and their meaning are strictly defined. An analysis of temporal seizures, recorded, filmed and described clinically in 300 patients having had a pre-s

Biological sex influences bilateral transcortical reflexes during unilateral upper extremity exercise in healthy adults.

The transcortical long-latency reflex (LLR) is a rapid feedback response that is thought to help stabilize movement following sudden disturbances and is a critical mechanism enabling precise upper limb control during unexpected perturbations. It occurs 50-150 ms after limb displacement and integrates both spinal and supraspinal circuits. Despite extensive research on reflexes during movement, sex-specific differences in LLR responses remain underexplored. Importantly, while bilateral reflex responses have been documented when both arms contribute to a shared movement goal, cross-transcortical

Effects of a neuromodulation protocol associated with sports training on upper limb function in a high-performance para-athlete: a case report.

This study investigated whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) optimizes the upper limb functional performance in a para-athlete with spinal cord injury (SCI). A right-handed para-athlete specializing in shotput, discus, and javelin throw with an incomplete SCI participated. The tDCS was applied in the left primary motor cortex twice-weekly for 5 weeks (20 min/session), associated with sport-specific training. Shoulder medial (MR) and lateral rotators (LR) isometric torque, handgrip and key pinch strength, and the specific functional performance were evaluated pre- and post-int

Unveiling structural damage of the corpus callosum in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis through diffusion tensor imaging and spread direction perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: Damage to the corpus callosum (CC) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients has been confirmed via electrophysiological, neuroimaging, and autopsy studies. Additionally, the CC is hypothesized to serve as a pathway for the spread of pathological information. This study aimed to investigate whether the CC plays a mediating role in the symptomatic spread of ALS. METHODS: In this observational study, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired from 45 individuals with the upper motor neuron-dominant (UMN-D) phenotype of ALS. The UMN-D ALS patients were categorized into tw

Human sleep spindles track experimentally excited brain circuits.

Spindles are hallmark oscillations during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. Together with slow oscillations (SOs), they are thought to play a mechanistic role in the consolidation of learned information. The quantity and spatial distribution of spindles have been linked to brain activity during learning before sleep and to memory performance after sleep. If spindles are drawn to cortical areas excited through pre-sleep learning tasks, this begs the question of whether the spatial distribution of spindles is flexible, and whether their regional expression can also be manipulated with experim

On the interplay between state-dependent reconfigurations of global signal correlation and BOLD fluctuations: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The dynamics of global, state-dependent reconfigurations in brain connectivity are yet unclear. We aimed at assessing reconfigurations of the global signal correlation coefficient (GSCORR), a measure of the connectivity between each voxel timeseries and the global signal, from resting-state to a stop-signal task. The secondary aim was to assess the relationship between GSCORR and blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activations or deactivation across three different trial-conditions (GO, STOP-correct, and STOP-incorrect). METHODS: As primary analysis we computed whole-brain, voxel-
