BACKGROUND: The main somatic symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are chronic musculoskeletal pain, stiffness, and fatigue, all of which are related to the muscle system and its functioning.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the asymptomatic upper and lower extremity muscles evaluated using ultrasonography (US) were different from healthy controls in both newly diagnosed and established FMS and to assess whether muscle measurements were related to fatigue and disease severity, as well as quality of life.
METHODS: This study was conducted on 152 subjects (102 patients and

In the present study, we evaluated the implication of IL12Bpro (rs17860508) and IL12B 3' UTR A/C single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (rs3212227) for the ankylosing spondylitis (AS) development and the impact of IL12B genetic variations on IL-23 and IL-12p40 production and musculoskeletal disease characteristics. 80 patients with AS and 242 healthy controls were studied. Genotyping for the rs3212227 was performed by restriction fragment length polymorphisms-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and for the rs17860508 by allele-specific PCR. Cytokines were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a syndrome characterised by chronic musculoskeletal pain, tenderness and other somatic symptoms. The prevalence of FM is approximately 2-7% in the general global population and is 30-40% in the population of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) with a structural pathology. In 2010, new classification criteria for FM were proposed, as an alternative to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 criteria. The objectives of the present study were to identify the prevalence of FM in the HT population and evaluate the associated features by using the new diagnostic criteria. The stu

Hydatid disease is caused by the parasitic tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. Osseous involvement accounts for 0.5% to 4% of cases in humans. Patients usually are from endemic zones and are initially asymptomatic, presenting with pain and edema at a later stage of disease. However, large lesions may present initially as pathologic fractures. Standard radiographs usually show expansive osteolytic lesions associated with initial cortical thinning, with compromise of the metaphysis or epiphysis, and may involve the diaphysis. The finding of periosteal reaction, osteocondensation, calcification, an

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To present a case of primary hydatid cyst in the lumbar subcutaneous tissue affecting posterior paravertebral muscle and mimicking disc herniation.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cystic hydatid disease is a rare but significant parasitic disease in endemic areas. Musculoskeletal or soft tissue hydatidosis accounts for about 0.5% to 5% of all echinococcal infections in endemic areas and is almost secondary to the hepatic or pulmonary disease. Primary lumbar subcutaneous hydatid cyst affecting paravertebral muscle and extending to neural foramina is a very ra

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-paclitaxel is a taxane with a unique pharmacokinetic profile. We investigated the safety and response rate of DHA-paclitaxel weekly in patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. Chemotherapy-naive and previously treated patients were eligible for this open-label phase II study. DHA-paclitaxel (500 mg/m²/week) was administered by a 1-hour intravenous infusion for five consecutive weeks in a 6-weeks cycle. Response was assessed using the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors every 6 weeks. Twenty-two patients were enrolled. The patients' median age was 56 years (r

Streptococcus dysgalactiae is a β-hemolytic group C/G Streptococcus increasingly recognized as a cause of invasive human disease. Although commonly associated with cellulitis, bacteremia, septic arthritis, and endocarditis, primary infectious myositis due to this organism is rare, particularly in immunocompetent adults. We report a case of a 33-year-old previously healthy male with a history of unexplained recurrent Streptococcus dysgalactiae bacteremia who presented with a five-day history of progressive right-sided neck and upper chest pain accompanied by low-grade fever. Calcific tendinitis is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite within or around tendon tissue. Although it has traditionally been regarded as a structural tendon pathology, growing clinical evidence suggests that symptom severity, particularly pain, is more closely related to inflammatory activity and disease stage than to the size or precise anatomical location of calcific deposits. In routine practice, patients most often seek medical attention during sudden and intense pain episodes, typically occurring in the resorptive phase. Current diagnos

Degenerative joint disease remains a leading cause of global disability, with early diagnosis posing a significant clinical challenge due to its gradual onset and symptom overlap with other musculoskeletal disorders. This review focuses on emerging diagnostic strategies by synthesizing evidence specifically from studies that integrate biochemical biomarkers, advanced imaging techniques, and machine learning models relevant to osteoarthritis. We evaluate the diagnostic utility of cartilage degradation markers (e.g., CTX-II, COMP), inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-1β, TNF-α), and synovial fluid

Galactosialidosis (GS, OMIM #256540) is a systemic autosomal recessive disorder that is due to a mutation in the cathepsin A (CTSA) gene. Its worldwide prevalence is rare, accounting for ~146 cases reported cases globally. In Bahrain alone, nine cases have been confirmed. This article aims to shed a light on the clinical spectrum and outcome of these nine patients who share the same novel genetic mutation. The article was written retrospectively based on the review of patients' medical records, which included clinical notes, biochemical, radiological, and genetic assessments. Analysis of the d

Cognitive dysfunction is a complaint of many patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Although the main symptoms of the disease are fatigue, widespread musculoskeletal pain, poor sleep quality, and tenderness points, the cognitive symptoms can be more distressing than the pain itself, and negatively affect their lives; however, many healthcare professionals underestimate these cognitive complaints and it is still one of the least researched topics. Proper management of these symptoms at an early stage may have a great impact to improve the mental health, physical function, and overall health of t

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can result in considerable disability and pain. The metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint is the most common diseased joint in RA. In clinical practice, MCP synovitis is commonly diagnosed on the basis of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) images. However, because of the vague criteria, the consistency in grading MCP synovitis based on MSUS images fluctuates between ultrasound imaging practitioners. Therefore, a new method for diagnosis of MCP synovitis is needed. Deep learning has developed rapidly in the medical area, which often requir

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by alpha-L-iduronidase (IDUA) deficiency, an enzyme responsible for glycosaminoglycan degradation. Musculoskeletal impairment is an important component of the morbidity related to the disease, as it has a major impact on patients' quality of life. To understand how this disease affects bone structure, morphological, biomechanical and histological analyses of femurs from 3- and 6-month-old wild type (Idua +/+) and MPS I knockout mice (Idua -/-) were performed. Femurs from 3-month-old Idua -/- mice were found to b

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cemented hip arthroplasty is considered the standard of care for treating both osteoporotic femoral neck fractures and pathologic disease of the proximal femur due to the ability to achieve strong fixation in poor quality bone. There is minimal literature evaluating uncemented arthroplasty for pathologic disease of the proximal femur. This objective of this study is to compare outcomes of patients undergoing cemented and uncemented arthroplasty of the proximal femur for an oncologic indication.
METHODS: Patients who underwent hip arthroplasty procedures in one healt

BACKGROUND: Parry-Romberg syndrome is characterized by progressive hemiatrophy of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle and bones of the skull. Its incidence is low, with a progressive and slow course. Its etiology is unknown, but it has been associated with several factors. Its clinical presentation involves dermatological, musculoskeletal and neuropsychiatric manifestations. The treatment consists of medical and surgical strategies. The use of steroids, alone or in combination with immunomodulators, has the objective of slowing down progression. The surgical treatment lies in facial reconstr

BACKGROUND: Reduced bone and muscle health in individuals with CKD contributes to their higher rates of morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: We tested the hypothesis that voluntary wheel running would improve musculoskeletal health in a CKD rat model. Rats with spontaneous progressive cystic kidney disease (Cy/+ IU) and normal littermates (NL) were given access to a voluntary running wheel or standard cage conditions for 10 weeks starting at 25 weeks of age when the rats with kidney disease had reached stage 2-3 of CKD. We then measured the effects of wheel running on serum biochemistry, tissue

The etiology underlying chronic widespread pain (CWP) remains largely unknown. An integrative biopsychosocial model seems to yield the most promising explanations for the pathogenesis of the condition, with genetic factors also contributing to disease development and maintenance. Here, we conducted a search of studies investigating the genetic and epigenetic epidemiology of CWP through electronic databases including Web of Science, Medline, PubMed, EMBASE, and Google Scholar. Combinations of keywords including CWP, chronic pain, musculoskeletal pain, genetics, epigenetics, gene, twins, single-

Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders. Genetic factors have been suggested to be an important contributor to its pathogenesis. Some genes, including PITX1, TBX4, and RBM10, have been associated with CTEV. We aimed to determine the disease-causing mutations in Chinese patients with isolated CTEV. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples of a three-generation pedigree and 53 sporadic patients with CTEV. Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were used to identify and validate disease-causing mutations, respectively. A putat

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disease, affecting nearly 25 % of the world population (WHO reports), leading to pain and disability. There are as yet no clinically proven therapies to halt OA onset or progression; the development of such therapies is, therefore, a national as well as international research priority. Obesity-related metabolic syndrome has been identified as the most significant, but also an entirely preventable risk factor for OA; however, the mechanisms underlying this link remain unclear. We have examined the available literature linking OA and metabol
