Low frequency of disease flare in patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal diseases who received SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the safety of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal disease (RMD). We evaluated the occurrence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) in RMD patients and heathy subjects who received anti-SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine. METHODS: We performed a telephone interview collecting any adverse event (AE) following immunization (AEFI) that occurred in RMD patients and healthy controls after the two doses of mRNA vaccine including common local reactogenicity and systemic events (for example, fever, fatigue/malaise, joint and muscle pain).

A human bone infection organ model for biomaterial research.

The aim of this work was to establish an organ model for staphylococcal infection of human bone samples and to investigate the influence and efficacy of a microporous β-tricalcium phosphate ceramic (β-TCP, RMS Foundation) loaded with hydrogels (alginate, alginate-di-aldehyde (ADA)-gelatin) and clindamycin on infected human bone tissue over a period of 28 days. For this purpose, human tibia plateaus, collected during total knee replacement surgery, were used as a source of bone material. Samples were infected with S. aureus ATCC29213 and treated with differently loaded β-TCP composites (alginat

Systemic application of carbon monoxide-releasing molecule 3 protects skeletal muscle from ischemia-reperfusion injury.

OBJECTIVE: Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) is a limb- and life-threatening complication of acute limb ischemia and musculoskeletal trauma. Carbon monoxide-releasing molecules (CORMs) have recently been shown to protect microvascular perfusion and to reduce inflammation and injury in various ischemic animal models. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of water-soluble CORM-3 on the extent of IR-induced muscle injury. METHODS: Wistar rats were randomized into three groups: sham (no ischemia), IR + CORM-3 (10 mg/kg intraperitoneally), and IR + inactive CORM-3 (iCORM-3; 10 mg/kg intrape

Clinical Value of FDG-PET/CT for the Evaluation of Rheumatic Diseases: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica, and Relapsing Polychondritis.

FDG is a tracer for visualizing glucose metabolism. PET/CT using FDG is widely used for the diagnosis of cancer, because glycolysis is elevated in cancer cells. Similarly, active inflammatory tissue also exhibits elevated glucose metabolism because of glycolysis in activated macrophages and proliferating fibroblasts. Elevated FDG uptake by active inflammatory tissues, such as those affected by arthritis, vasculitis, lymphadenitis, and chondritis, has enabled the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases using FDG-PET/CT. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, chronic inflammation of the joints resu

Does Chronic Corticosteroid Use Increase Risks of Readmission, Thromboembolism, and Revision After THA?

BACKGROUND: Systemic corticosteroids are commonly used to treat autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, but they can be associated with various musculoskeletal problems and disorders. There currently is a limited amount of data describing the postoperative complications of THA associated specifically with chronic corticosteroid use. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: For chronic corticosteroid users undergoing THA, we asked: (1) What is the risk of hospital readmission at 30 and 90 days after surgery? (2) What is the risk of venous thromboembolism at 30 and 90 days after surgery? (3) What is the risk of revis

Observed and hidden factors underlying the accumulation of chronic diseases across eight major organ systems: a longitudinal birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although individual risk factors have been linked to specific diseases, the cumulative effect of life-course factors on the accumulation of multiple chronic diseases remains unclear. This study aimed to quantify the extent to which measured and unmeasured factors explain disease burden across eight major organ systems. METHODS: We did a longitudinal analysis of a population-based birth cohort of individuals born at Helsinki University Central Hospital (Helsinki, Finland) between 1934 and 1944, who attended child welfare clinics in the city, were living in Finland in 1971, and were

Mechanisms mediating vibration-induced chronic musculoskeletal pain analyzed in the rat.

UNLABELLED: While occupational exposure to vibration is a common cause of acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, eliminating exposure produces limited symptomatic improvement, and reexposure precipitates rapid recurrence or exacerbation. To evaluate mechanisms underlying these pain syndromes, we have developed a model in the rat, in which exposure to vibration (60-80Hz) induces, in skeletal muscle, both acute mechanical hyperalgesia as well as long-term changes characterized by enhanced hyperalgesia to a proinflammatory cytokine or reexposure to vibration. Exposure of a hind limb to vibration

Orthopaedic conditions in Ras/MAPK related disorders.

BACKGROUND: The RAS/MAPK disorders [Noonan syndrome, cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome, Costello syndrome, and Leopard syndrome] are heterogenous conditions with phenotypic overlap. Their orthopaedic manifestations are not well defined, and their phenotypic similarity makes differentiating them difficult. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated 60 individuals: 26 with Noonan syndrome, 32 with CFC syndrome, and 2 with Costello syndrome. Each individual underwent a structured orthopaedic history and physical evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon, and a syndromic evaluation by a geneticist. RESULT

Health hazards of cement dust.

Even in the 21st century, millions of people are working daily in a dusty environment. They are exposed to different types of health hazards such as fume, gases and dust, which are risk factors in developing occupational disease. Cement industry is involved in the development of structure of this advanced and modern world but generates dust during its production. Cement dust causes lung function impairment, chronic obstructive lung disease, restrictive lung disease, pneumoconiosis and carcinoma of the lungs, stomach and colon. Other studies have shown that cement dust may enter into the system

Epidemiological Analysis and Susceptibility Profile of Pathogens Isolated in Blood Cultures From Hospital Angeles Lindavista in Mexico City.

Background Bloodstream infections contribute to morbidity and mortality. A wide variety of microorganisms can be identified and recovered from these infections, and blood culture is the primary method for detecting them and determining their antimicrobial susceptibility. This helps clinicians confirm the efficacy of the initial empiric therapy or select an appropriate alternative based on the susceptibility of the isolated microorganism, thereby reducing the risks associated with antimicrobial misuse. We aimed to describe and analyze the bacteria isolated in blood culture samples, their antimi

A Single-Center Retrospective Study on the Clinical Outcomes of TightRope Fixation Versus Syndesmotic Screw Fixation in the Management of Acute Traumatic Ankle Syndesmotic Injuries.

Background Ankle fractures are one of the most common presentations in orthopaedic surgery and represent the third most frequent musculoskeletal injury in the elderly population. Syndesmotic injuries can be associated with ankle fractures, and surgical intervention is critical in these injuries to restore stability and prevent long-term disability. Traditionally, syndesmotic screw fixation has been the standard treatment for acute traumatic syndesmotic injuries, but controversies regarding this fixation method remain. Over recent years, the TightRope system (Arthrex, Florida, US) has gained po

The novel magnesium-titanium hybrid cannulated screws for the treatment of vertical femoral neck fractures: Biomechanical evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Conventional cannulated screws are commonly used for internal fixation in the treatment of vertical femoral neck fractures. However, the noticeably high rates of undesirable outcomes such as nonunion, malunion, avascular necrosis, and fixation failure still troubled the patients and surgeons. It is urgent to develop new cannulated screws to improve the above clinical problems. The purpose of this study was to design a novel magnesium-titanium hybrid cannulated screw and to further evaluate its biomechanical performance for the treatment of vertical femoral neck fractures.
