Hearing loss (HL) is the most common sensory disorder in the world population. One common cause of HL is the presence of vestibular schwannoma (VS), a benign tumor of the VIII cranial nerve, arising from Schwann cell (SC) transformation. In the last decade, the increasing incidence of VS has been correlated to electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure, which might be considered a pathogenic cause of VS development and HL. Here, we explore the molecular mechanisms underlying the biologic changes of human SCs and/or their oncogenic transformation following EMF exposure. Through NGS technology and RNA

Ginsenoside Rh2 (G-Rh2), a component of ginseng extraction, exerted anti-tumor property in the occurrence and progress of human tumors. Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a kind of benign tumor. Extraction of traditional Chinese herb has been applied to treat VS as adjuvant therapy. Nevertheless, G-Rh2-related molecular mechanisms in VS progress are not yet clear. The purpose of current study is to unveil the function and potential molecular mechanism of Rh2 in VS cellular functions. At first, the viability and apoptosis of VS cells treated with different concentrations of Rh2 were assessed. Autoph

This article discusses the indications, surgical technique, results, and complications of middle fossa craniotomy (MFC) for vestibular schwannoma surgery, focusing on issues such as serviceable hearing, tumor characteristics, and patient-specific factors that help determine options for therapy. MFC is suitable for intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas that extend less than 1 cm into the cerebellopontine angle in patients with good hearing. With the expanding use of modern imaging, many small tumors are being identified in patients with no or minimal symptoms. Patients with these tumors have

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: The objective of this paper is to highlight two main points. The primary aim is to demonstrate that cochlear implants can function in the presence of retrocochlear pathology, even after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and hence to introduce this as a management option in selected patients with retrocochlear pathology, such as Neurofibromatosis type II (NFII) patients. A secondary aim is to act as a caveat that computed tomography (CT) scanning alone may not be sufficient imaging in subjects undergoing cochlear implantation (CI).
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: In this paper

OBJECTIVE: Identify molecular targets for development of tumor-specific pharmacotherapeutics aimed at treating vestibular schwannomas (VSs). Activated epidermal growth factor receptor B (ErbB) 2 and ErbB3 are abundantly expressed in VS. ErbB2 signaling is essential for Schwann cell differentiation, survival, and proliferation. VS arise after loss of functional merlin, a putative tumor suppressor. Merlin internalizes ErbB2 receptors in rodent Schwann cells. Unregulated ErbB signaling may contribute to VS tumorigenesis.
STUDY DESIGN: Molecular analyses, retrospective clinical correlation.

BACKGROUND: There is no uniformly accepted method of reporting the size of vestibular schwannomas (VS) and to evaluate the individual tumour behaviour in the posterior fossa (PF). To help the treatment decision we investigated the VS and PF morphometry using a computerized method.
METHOD: Stereotactic fused CISS MR and CT scan images were obtained from 58 adult patients (31 males and 27 females) harbouring an unilateral VS (25 Koos II, 21 Koos III and 12 Koos IV). Using a Gammaplanworking station we screened for the following measures: anteroposterior (AP), craniocaudal (CC), transverse (T) a

Vestibular schwannomas have been traditionally managed with microsurgical removal and in recent years, stereotactic radiotherapy. However, there is a group of patients in whom a conservative management approach might represent a desirable alternative. The aim of this study was to determine the natural history and outcome following the conservative management of 72 patients with unilateral vestibular schwannomas. This is a prospective cohort review of a previously published group of patients [Clin. Otolaryngol. (2000) 25, 28-39] with unilateral vestibular schwannoma that were initially analysed

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: T1-weighted spin-echo imaging has been widely used to study anatomic detail and abnormalities of the brain; however, the image contrast of this technique is often poor, especially at low field strengths. We tested a new pulse sequence, T1-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), which provides good contrast between lesions, surrounding edematous tissue, and normal parenchyma at low field strengths and at acquisition times comparable to those of T1-weighted spin-echo imaging.
METHODS: Thirteen patients with brain lesions underwent T1-weighted spin-echo and
