BACKGROUND: Sensitization to topical treatments used in leg ulcers is common. Questioning and patch testing are used to identify causative drugs or dressings.
OBJECTIVES: To study the current frequency of sensitization in our centre, to analyse previously published studies, and to compare sensitization in recent years with studies published before 1990.
METHODS: A retrospective study was undertaken of all patients admitted with leg ulcers in 2001 and 2002. Of the files of 235 patients with leg ulcers reviewed, we identified 106 patients (group A) who had been patch tested in our institution

Health risks of inhaled nasal toxicants were reviewed with emphasis on chemically induced nasal lesions in humans, sensory irritation, olfactory and trigeminal nerve toxicity, nasal immunopathology and carcinogenesis, nasal responses to chemical mixtures, in vitro models, and nasal dosimetry- and metabolism-based extrapolation of nasal data in animals to humans. Conspicuous findings in humans are the effects of outdoor air pollution on the nasal mucosa, and tobacco smoking as a risk factor for sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma. Objective methods in humans to discriminate between sensory irrita

Adaptive features of natural killer (NK) cells have been reported in various species with different underlying mechanisms. It is unclear, however, which NK cell populations are capable of mounting antigen-specific recall responses and how such functions are regulated at the molecular level. Here, we identify and characterize a discrete population of CD49a+CD16- NK cells in the human liver that displays increased epigenetic potential to elicit memory responses and has the functional properties to exert antigen-specific immunity in the skin as an effector site. Integrated chromatin-based epigene

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to evaluate the effect of overloading on the palatal movement of the maxillary molar.
METHODS: The maxillary first molars of male C57Bl/6 mice were moved palatally with loads of 10 or 30 g for 14 days, and the amount of tooth movement was longitudinally measured on microcomputed tomography images. Bone remodeling around the molar root with the 30-g load was evaluated at days 3, 5, 7, and 14 after the start of tooth movement using histomorphometry and immunodetection of bone-restricted interferon inducible transmembrane-like protein, a novel marker of active bon

The incisive canal is located on the median plane of the maxilla, posterior to the roots of the central incisor. Although the incisive canal is not considered an anatomic structure that may limit tooth movement, it has recently gained attention regarding the possibilities of surgical invasion and associated complications because of its proximity to the maxillary central incisors. In the 2 illustrated cases, lip protrusion was improved by en-masse bodily retraction of the anterior teeth (>8 mm) using temporary anchorage devices. Three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography showed that the ma

Previous studies in pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) showed that acute hypoxia activates capacitative Ca(2+) entry (CCE) but the molecular candidate(s) mediating CCE caused by acute hypoxia remain unclear. The present study aimed to determine if transient receptor potential canonical 1 (TRPC1) and Orai1 interact with stromal interacting molecule 1 (STIM1) and mediate CCE caused by acute hypoxia in mouse PASMCs. In primary cultured PASMCs loaded with fura-2, acute hypoxia caused a transient followed by a sustained rise in intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)). The transi

Chronically epileptic rats, produced by prior injection of pilocarpine, were used to investigate whether changes in intrinsic neuronal excitability may contribute to the epileptogenicity of the hippocampus in experimental temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Paired extra-/intracellular electrophysiological recordings were made in the CA1 pyramidal layer in acute hippocampal slices prepared from control and epileptic rats and perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (ACSF). Whereas orthodromic activation of CA1 neurons evoked only a single, stimulus-graded population spike in control slices, it pr

Ca2+ spikes, their contribution to firing patterns, and the underlying Ca2+ currents in neurons of the medial preoptic nucleus of rat were investigated by tight-seal whole-cell recordings in a slice preparation. Two different types of spikes were recorded: Low-threshold spikes were generated from membrane potentials <-75 mV. High-threshold spikes were recorded when K+ currents were reduced, and were readily evoked from membrane potentials near -40 mV. Both types of spikes were blocked by substitution of Co2+ for Ca2+ in the external medium, but were insensitive to 2.0 microM TTX. Under voltage

Voltage-dependent Ca2+ currents evoke synaptic transmitter release. Of six types of Ca2+ channels, L-, N-, P-, Q-, R-, and T-type, only N- and P/Q-type channels have been pharmacologically identified to mediate action-potential-evoked transmitter release in the mammalian central nervous system. We tested whether Ca2+ channels other than N- and P/Q-type control transmitter release in a calyx-type synapse of the rat medial nucleus of the trapezoid body. Simultaneous recordings of presynaptic Ca2+ influx and the excitatory postsynaptic current evoked by a single action potential were made at sing

BACKGROUND: Brain metal homeostasis is essential for brain health, and deregulation can result in oxidative stress on the brain parenchyma.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective in this study was to focus on two hemorrhagic MRI manifestations of small vessel disease [cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) and cortical superficial siderosis (cSS)] and associations with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) iron levels. In addition, we aimed to analyze CSF biomarkers for dementia and associations with CSF metal levels.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 196 patients who underwent memory clinic investigation, including b

Cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) proteins are a recently discovered family of cation efflux transporters that might play an essential role in metal homeostasis and tolerance. Here, we describe the identification, characterization, and localization of PtdMTP1, a member of the CDF family from the hybrid poplar Populus trichocarpa x Populus deltoides. PtdMTP1 is expressed constitutively and ubiquitously, although at low levels. Heterologous expression in yeast showed that PtdMTP1 was able to complement the hypersensitivity of mutant strains to Zn but not to other metals, including Cd, Co, Mn, a

Although nitric oxide (NO) participates in development of hypersensitivity states in the spinal cord thought to underlie chronic pain, it also participates in analgesia produced by various drugs. In rats with a hypersensitivity state following peripheral nerve injury, spinal administration of an NO donor or l-cysteine alone produced no effect, whereas their combination, which yields s-nitroso-l-cysteine (SNC) powerfully reduced hypersensitivity. In the current study, we examined the ability of SNC to stimulate release of a known spinal analgesic neurotransmitter, norepinephrine (NE), as a poss

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is a common chronic bacterial infection and an established cause of gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. Environmental and host metal status may interact with gastric inflammatory and microbial processes, and infection-related changes in gastric acidity, mucosal permeability, and metal handling may in turn alter local tissue concentrations. This study compared systemic and gastric tissue concentrations of seven elements in adults with histopathologically confirmed H. pylori infection and uninfected controls. Methods: This single-center

BACKGROUND: Current diagnostic approaches for Alzheimer's disease (AD) largely rely on cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers and neuroimaging, which may be invasive, costly, and not readily accessible in routine clinical settings. We investigated whether serum elemental profiling combined with machine learning could provide complementary information for AD identification and exploratory cognitive score prediction.
METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 874 participants enrolled between 2017 and 2023 from the Brain Aging National Cohort-Peking Union Medical College cohort, compris

Edible salt is an essential component of the human diet and a critical vehicle for iodine fortification, yet it can also serve as a pathway for chronic dietary exposure to toxic heavy metals. Despite decades of research documenting metal contamination in salt, the sources of contamination, particularly the potential role of mine blasting, remain inadequately characterized, and the efficacy of conventional purification methods has been overestimated. This systematic review aimed to synthesize available evidence on heavy metal contamination in edible salt across four interconnected dimensions: (

BACKGROUND: Preparing and submitting a voluntary adverse event (AE) report to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a medical device typically takes 40 min. User-friendly Web and mobile reporting apps may increase efficiency. Further, coupled with strategies for direct patient involvement, patient engagement in AE reporting may be improved. In 2012, the FDA Center for Devices and Radiologic Health (CDRH) launched a free, public mobile AE reporting app, MedWatcher, for patients and clinicians. During the same year, a patient community on Facebook adopted the app to submit reports involv
