Nurse-perceived workload, staffing, and patient turnover: An analysis of longitudinal routine data.

BACKGROUND: Nursing workload is a critical factor in ensuring safe, high-quality patient care and maintaining nurse well-being. While high workload has been linked to adverse outcomes for both patients and staff, its assessment remains challenging. Common approaches rely on activity- or dependency-based measures or professional judgement, yet these often overlook important subjective and contextual factors. Nurse-perceived workload, particularly at the shift level, offers valuable insights but has received limited attention in research and is rarely used to guide staffing decisions. OBJECTIVE

Perioperative inflammation in gynecologic oncology: nursing strategies for enhanced recovery and complication prevention.

Major gynecologic oncology surgery produces an acute inflammatory and neuroendocrine stress response superimposed on cancer-associated inflammation, frailty, malnutrition, anemia, and treatment-related physiologic vulnerability. Although this response is necessary for tissue repair, excessive or poorly resolved activation can contribute to pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, ileus, insulin resistance, endothelial dysfunction, infection, venous thromboembolism, functional decline, and delayed return to oncologic treatment. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways reduce avoidable st

"It's going to be a glass of wine shift:" a qualitative exploration of alcohol cultures in nursing in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use is prevalent among nurses, with previous studies describing high levels of risky or hazardous alcohol consumption among this occupational group. Drinking cultures, defined as the patterns, norms and values that exist within a subgroup within society, have been shown to influence alcohol consumption among occupational groups. The aim of this paper is to explore alcohol cultures in nursing in Australia, by applying the Alcohol Cultures Framework to two qualitative datasets. METHODS: Secondary, framework-driven analysis of two qualitative datasets of interviews with nur

Caring for the Person's Mirror: The Entrustment of the Data-Person as a Nursing Theory for the Algorithmic Age.

Health data are born of a person's lived reality and carry that reality with them. They inhabit the systems that receive them, they feed the algorithms that learn from them, and they outlive the encounter in which they were produced. Nursing has begun to theorise its own side of this scene, from technological competency to frameworks for responsible artificial intelligence; the side of the person whose data have departed remains theoretically unattended. This essay proposes the Theory of the Entrustment of the Data-Person. Its founding act is the entrustment. Handing over one's need for care a

Exploring Policy for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Education: Student and Faculty Perceptions.

BACKGROUND: Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is rapidly reshaping higher education, creating opportunities and challenges related to academic integrity, educator readiness, and policy clarity, particularly in nursing education. PURPOSE: To examine nurse educator and student perspectives on GAI use, institutional policies, syllabus language, and best practices in nursing education. METHODS: A descriptive quantitative survey was completed by 211 nurse educators and 89 nursing students (N = 300) across diverse nursing programs. Data were analyzed by program type, learning model, and deg

Magnet Recognition, Leadership Responsiveness, and Nurse Moral Distress: A Multilevel Mediation Analysis.

PURPOSE: Moral distress is a pervasive challenge in nursing and has been associated with burnout, job dissatisfaction, and turnover. Although Magnet Recognition has been associated with more favorable nursing practice environments and nurse outcomes, little is known about the association between Magnet status and nurses' experiences of moral distress or the role of leadership responsiveness in this association. This study examined whether management responsiveness to patient care concerns accounted for part of the association between hospital Magnet status and nurse moral distress. DESIGN: Th

BACKGROUND: Enhancing nursing care coordination systems supports improvement of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates. This project implemented a nursing student-led patient navigation model to address open colonoscopy referrals while providing experiential, systems-based learning aligned with Kolb's experiential learning theory. METHOD: Undergraduate nursing students in a community-focused clinical course were trained as patient navigators and partnered with nine federally qualified health centers (FQHC) to review and act on open colonoscopy referrals. RESULTS: Students assessed 303 open

Public health nurse advocacy as essential for addressing the health impacts of climate change.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is transforming the environmental, social and structural determinants of health, intensifying inequities across populations and geographies. Although nurses are at the forefront of addressing climate-related health impacts, nurses' influence on climate policy remains significantly underleveraged. Strengthening the leadership and advocacy of nurses is essential for meeting the escalating population health challenges posed by climate change. ANALYSIS: There is limited organized advocacy for climate action by public health nurses. At the 7th Global Network of Public He

Employment intentions of vocational nursing students toward geriatric care in central China.

BACKGROUND: Global population aging has raised worldwide demand for geriatric care practitioners, including in China. Vocational nursing students are key reserve workforce for geriatric care, yet few enter this sector. Existing studies have explored individual factors shaping geriatric care employment intention, but few examine interactive effects of family support, experiential exposure and personal cognitive factors, or extend Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) to Chinese vocational nursing education. PURPOSE: This study explores how family support, practical care experience and personal

Procalcitonin Reduces Overuse of Antibiotics in Nursing Facility Residents: A Quality Improvement Initiative.

Procalcitonin (PCT), a biomarker for bacterial infections, has been studied in different clinical settings, including primary care, emergency departments, and intensive care units. Much less in nursing facilities (NFs), where antibiotic use is usually excessive. The aim of this quality assurance performance improvement initiative was to determine the effectiveness and sustainability of PCT in reducing unnecessary antibiotics in a 304-bed skilled NF. The initiative consisted of: (1) a 9-month baseline as a reference point; (2) a 9-month intervention where eligible residents were tested for PCT

Lived experiences of nurse academics, motivations and threats: Qualitative evidence synthesis review.

INTRODUCTION: Preparatory nursing education has undergone progressive changes including a shift to studying within universities, requiring nurse educators to evolve and develop. This transition from trainer to academic educator has not been without problems, especially balancing the dual demands of being both a nurse and an academic. With a global shortage of nursing academics, understanding the challenges they face within their everyday work is crucial to ensure a stable international workforce of the future. AIM: This qualitative evidence synthesis examines published international literatur
