Applying a Social Determinants of Health Approach to the Opioid Epidemic.

Ohio is one of the hardest-hit states in the United States when it comes to opioid overdose deaths. Confronted with over 4,000 opioid overdose deaths in 2017, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services launched the Community Collective Impact Model for Change (CCIM4C) initiative to encourage 12 Ohio counties to think more deeply about primary prevention. By moving upstream and taking a look at the causes of the opioid crisis, the counties involved in the CCIM4C initiative were able to expand the range of potential partners and potential solutions, moving from emergency respons

Public health policies and alcohol-related liver disease.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) represents a major public health problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the highest levels of per capita alcohol consumption are observed in countries of the European Region. Alcohol consumption is also alarmingly increasing in developing countries. ALD is one of the main contributors to the burden of alcohol-attributable deaths and disability. In the United States, severe forms of ALD such alcoholic hepatitis have increased in the last decade and in the United Kingdom, three-quarters of liver-related mortality results from alcohol co

Health Information Sources, Perceived Vaccination Benefits, and Maintenance of Childhood Vaccination Schedules.

Parental concerns over the safety or necessity of childhood vaccination have increased over the past decades. At the same time, there has been a proliferation of vaccine-related information available through a range of health information sources. This study investigates the associations between evaluations of health information sources, parental perceptions of childhood vaccination benefits, and the maintenance of vaccination schedules for their children. Specifically, this study aims to (a) incorporate social media into the battery of health information sources and (b) differentiate household

Understanding the revolving door: individual and structural-level predictors of recidivism among individuals with HIV leaving jail.

Incarceration, particularly when recurrent, can significantly compromise the health of individuals living with HIV. Despite this, the occurrence of recidivism among individuals with HIV has been little examined, particularly among those leaving jail, who may be at especially high risk for return to the criminal justice system. We evaluated individual- and structural-level predictors of recidivism and time to re-incarceration in a cohort of 798 individuals with HIV leaving jail. Nearly a third of the sample experienced at least one re-incarceration event in the 6 months following jail release.

Unconditional cash transfers for reducing poverty and vulnerabilities: effect on use of health services and health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Unconditional cash transfers (UCTs; provided without obligation) for reducing poverty and vulnerabilities (e.g. orphanhood, old age or HIV infection) are a type of social protection intervention that addresses a key social determinant of health (income) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The relative effectiveness of UCTs compared with conditional cash transfers (CCTs; provided so long as the recipient engages in prescribed behaviours such as using a health service or attending school) is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of UCTs for improving health services us

Physical activity for public health in the 21st century.

With over 5 million attributed deaths per year, physical inactivity is a major global public health issue. Although the importance of physical activity is well recognized within the scope of obesity and cardiometabolic disease prevention and control, its broader benefits for the health of individuals and societies are yet to be fully harnessed. Furthermore, the role of active leisure, active transport and active labor-primary domains of physical activity-in supporting or hindering social and health equity has been largely overlooked. Here we (1) used a health equity lens to describe global dom

Major life events, well-being comparisons, and mental health outcomes: A four-wave longitudinal study.

The experience and appraisal of major life events (MLE) can impact mental health. MLE may disrupt one's world view and self-perception, necessitating psychological adaptation. Consequently, individuals may experience an intensified need to compare their current well-being with different standards. We hypothesized that the relationship between MLE, their appraisal, and mental health is mediated by aversive well-being comparisons. Specifically, frequent comparisons were expected to heighten perceived discrepancies between the target and standard, amplify negative affective impact, and consequent

Exploring trust dynamics in health information systems: the impact of patients' health conditions on information source preferences.

INTRODUCTION: Health information systems (HISs) should provide accessible and high-quality information to patients. However, the challenge lies in understanding patients' trust preferences for health information. This study explores how different information sources (e.g., online platforms, interpersonal sources) are trusted under varying health conditions, focusing on symptom intensity and disease type. METHODS: Using a 2 × 2 × 4 between-subject design, 243 participants from a US college were presented with vignettes of acute or chronic diseases with varying symptom intensities and informati

Cost-effectiveness of village health worker-led integrated community case management (iCCM) versus health facility based management for childhood illnesses in rural southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Uganda, village health workers (VHWs) manage childhood illness under the integrated community case management (iCCM) strategy. Care is provided for malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea in a community setting. Currently, there is limited evidence on the cost-effectiveness of iCCM in comparison to health facility-based management for childhood illnesses. This study examined the cost-effectiveness of the management of childhood illness using the VHW-led iCCM against health facility-based services in rural south-western Uganda. METHODS: Data on the costs and effectiveness of VHW-led i

Dying at "home" - a qualitative study of end-of-life care in rural Northern Norway from the perspective of health care professionals.

BACKGROUND: 'Most patients want to die at home' is a familiar statement in palliative care. The rate of home deaths is therefore often used as a success criterion. However, providing palliative care and enabling patients to die at home in rural and remote areas may be challenging due to limited health care resources and geographical factors. In this study we explored health care professionals' experiences and reflections on providing palliative care to patients at the end of life in rural Northern Norway. METHODS: This is a qualitative focus group and interview study in rural Northern Norway

The impact of partner's behaviour on pregnancy related outcomes and safe child-birth in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan is one of the nations with the worst statistics for pregnancy-related outcomes. Health programmes in underdeveloped nations frequently ignore the role of partners in maternal health, which is a crucial contributing factor in these worst situations. This research study aims to explore the role of husbands in maternity care and safe childbirth in Pakistan. METHODS: The data for this study comes from the Pakistan Maternal Mortality Survey 2019. The k-Modes clustering algorithm was implemented to generate clusters from the dataset. Cluster profiling was used to identify the p

Aesthetic ways of knowing: exploring mental health nurses' experiences of delirium superimposed on dementia.

BACKGROUND: In the UK, people with delirium superimposed on dementia may be cared for by mental health nurses, however there is little in the literature about the experience of caring for people with the condition from the perspective of mental health nurses. AIM: To illuminate the experiences of mental health nurses caring for people with delirium superimposed on dementia and to explore how mental health nurses 'know' the people they care for using 'aesthetic ways of knowing'. METHOD: A mixed-methods design was used guided by the principles of activity theory. Participants were registered m

Adverse Childhood Experiences During the COVID-19 Pandemic and Associations with Poor Mental Health and Suicidal Behaviors Among High School Students - Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey, United States, January-June 2021.

Social and educational disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated concerns about adolescents' mental health and suicidal behavior. Data from the 2021 Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES) indicate that 37.1% of U.S. high school students reported poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 19.9% considering and 9.0% attempting suicide in the preceding year (1). Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)* are associated with poor mental health and suicidal behaviors (2,3), and high prevalence of some ACEs have been documented during the pandemic (4). ACEs are prev

Development of the Homeless Health Access to Care Tool to identify health-related vulnerability among people experiencing homelessness: Delphi study, Australia.

OBJECTIVES: In this paper, we report the development of the Homeless Health Access to Care Tool. This tool aims to improve the gap in assessing health need and capacity to access healthcare of people experiencing homelessness. Tools exist that prioritise people experiencing homelessness for housing, but none specifically designed to prioritise for healthcare, or that are succinct enough to be easily implemented to emergency department or primary healthcare settings. DESIGN AND SETTING: The Homeless Health Access to Care Tool has been adapted from an existing tool, the Vulnerability Index Serv

Differences in the prevalence of mental health disorders among Black American adults with sickle cell disease compared to those with non-heritable medical conditions or no medical conditions.

Our aim was to determine differences in the prevalence of mental health disorders between Black Americans living with sickle cell disease (SCD) and Black Americans with other, non-heritable medical conditions, or no medical conditions. We examined the prevalence of mental health disorders among a non-institutionalized, community sample of Black adults in the US from the National Survey of American Life. We compared the odds of mental health disorders between Black American adults with SCD and those with other medical conditions, or no medical condition. Among the SCD group, 38·8% reported at l

Maternal Psychological Well-Being and Infant Emergency Department Utilization.

BACKGROUND: A mother's psychological well-being impacts her own and her infant's health. Challenges to maternal psychological well-being (eg, depression, anxiety) are associated with increased infant emergency department (ED) utilization. It is not known if other maternal psychological factors, such as relational health and past maltreatment during one's own childhood, are also associated with child ED utilization. OBJECTIVE: Examine maternal psychological factors (ie, childhood maltreatment, mental health, and relational health) associated with infant ED utilization in the first year of life
