PURPOSE: We prospectively evaluated the NOVAWET-Perception multifocal contact lens for comfort and performance.
METHODS: We fit 28 presbyopic patients with this multifocal contact lens. This multifocal rigid gas permeable lens has a multiaspheric back surface and multiple eccentricity values, allowing for a natural field of vision at all angles. Patients were evaluated prior to inclusion in the study and then at 1,3, and 9 months. Evaluations included slit lamp examination, visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and completion of a questionnaire regarding comfort and overall satisfaction.

PURPOSE: Twelve volunteers participated in a study designed to measure the overnight corneal edema response with a variety of hydrogel contact lenses. During the study four subjects (5 eyes) experienced a contact lens related acute red eye (CLARE) reaction, which manifested as severe ocular pain, photophobia, corneal infiltration, and conjunctival hyperemia. We constructed three separate three-dimensional (3-D) models from serial high voltage electron micrographs (HVEM) of five human keratocytes. We performed qualitative and quantitative assessments of contact lens performance at 1 and 6 months among 23 patients enrolled in the Solitaire Bifocal Contact Lens Study. Overall satisfaction and comfort at 6 months was rated good to excellent in 83% and 84% of patients, respectively. We fit the SimulVue bifocal contact lens, a soft lens with a simultaneous vision design, in 30 presbyopic patients. Perforating corneal injuries often result in scarred corneas in which adequate visual rehabilitation cannot be achieved with spectacles due to irregular corneal surface. In these eyes, the presence of aphakia often adds to the problem with the coexistence of anisometropia. We treated three patients with Aspergillus keratomycosis with collagen shields soaked in amphotericin B (0.50%) for 2 hours at 25 degrees C before application. A prospective study was performed to investigate the clinical characteristics of corneal foreign bodies and to determine if these characteristics were related to the culture results of the foreign body. Ten corneal specimens obtained at the time of penetrating keratoplasty for long-standing refractory Acanthamoeba keratitis were reviewed. Histopathologic findings included epithelial denudation and variable degrees of necrosis, inflammation, and cysts or trophozoites of acanthamoeba in the stroma. No blood vessels were found in the stroma despite the presence of long-standing corneal inflammation. The absence of corneal stromal neovascularization on biomicroscopic and histopathologic examination is a sign of Acanthamoeba keratitis.

All hospitalized cases of contact lens induced keratitis with stromal involvement among cosmetic wearers in Sweden over a 3-year period were reviewed for risk factors in relation to lens type and wear schedule. Information on every case was obtained from ophthalmology departments. Lens type and wear schedule were identified. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the management of 118 eyes of 66 new patients presenting with keratoconus at the University of Florida from 1987 through 1992. Eyes were ultimately managed by one of three methods: glasses or no correction; contact lenses; or penetrating keratoplasty.
