Primary Brain Abscess Caused by Nocardia terpenica: a Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Nocardia terpenica is an exceptionally rare opportunistic pathogen, with infections scarcely documented in clinical practice. We report the first case of primary brain abscess caused by Nocardia terpenica and present a comprehensive review of the microbiological features and clinical presentations associated with this pathogen. METHODS: The patient underwent intracranial puncture and drainage due to a brain abscess. During the procedure, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was collected for culture. The isolated pathogen was subjected to Gram staining and modified acid-fast staining. Identi

Harnessing hypoxia: bacterial adaptation and chronic infection in cystic fibrosis.

The exquisite ability of bacteria to adapt to their environment is essential for their capacity to colonize hostile niches. In the cystic fibrosis (CF) lung, hypoxia is among several environmental stresses that opportunistic pathogens must overcome to persist and chronically colonize. Although the role of hypoxia in the host has been widely reviewed, the impact of hypoxia on bacterial pathogens has not yet been studied extensively. This review considers the bacterial oxygen-sensing mechanisms in three species that effectively colonize the lungs of people with CF, namely Pseudomonas aeruginosa,

Mycobacterium avium biofilms: mechanism of production, composition, and its role in pathogenesis and drug resistance.

The genus Mycobacterium contains over 180 species, and new species are added frequently. Among these are several obligate pathogens, namely Mycobacterium leprae and the species of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex; however, the vast majority are environmental bacteria that occupy numerous habitats and are collectively referred to as nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Most NTM are harmless to humans, but the ability of some species to cause infections in people has been increasingly recognized over the past several decades. Mycobacterium avium subs. hominissuis has emerged as one of the mo

Drug repurposing for fungal infections.

The rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria is a well-recognized threat to world health, necessitating the implementation of effective treatments. This issue has been identified as a top priority on the global agenda by the World Health Organization. Certain strains, such as Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida lusitaniae, Candida auris, select cryptococcal species, and opportunistic Aspergillus or Fusarium species, have significant intrinsic resistance to numerous antifungal medicines. This inherent resistance and subsequent suboptimal clinical outcomes underscore the critical imperative fo

Azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus- comprehensive review.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous filamentous fungus commonly found in the environment. It is also an opportunistic human pathogen known to cause a range of respiratory infections, such as invasive aspergillosis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Azole antifungal agents are widely used for the treatment and prophylaxis of Aspergillus infections due to their efficacy and tolerability. However, the emergence of azole resistance in A. fumigatus has become a major concern in recent years due to their association with increased treatment failures and mortality rates. The developmen

Guidelines for the diagnosis and management of adult aplastic anaemia: A British Society for Haematology Guideline.

Pancytopenia with hypocellular bone marrow is the hallmark of aplastic anaemia (AA) and the diagnosis is confirmed after careful evaluation, following exclusion of alternate diagnosis including hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndromes. Emerging use of molecular cyto-genomics is helpful in delineating immune mediated AA from inherited bone marrow failures (IBMF). Camitta criteria is used to assess disease severity, which along with age and availability of human leucocyte antigen compatible donor are determinants for therapeutic decisions. Supportive care with blood and platelet transfusion support

Brucellosis in a patient with Crohn's disease treated with infliximab: A case report.

Crohn's disease (CD) is an inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract and presents with myriad symptoms. Various treatments, including biological treatments, are available. The use of biologics increases the risk of opportunistic infections, with no association with serious infections (1). To the best of our knowledge, there are no established recommendations or case studies for patients with CD infected with Brucella being actively treated with biologics and immunomodulators to date. Herein, we report the first case of brucellosis diagnosed in a patient with C

Progesterone promotes CXCl2-dependent vaginal neutrophil killing by activating cervical resident macrophage-neutrophil crosstalk.

Vaginal infections in women of reproductive age represent a clinical dilemma with significant socioeconomic implications. The current understanding of mucosal immunity failure during early pathogenic invasions that allows the pathogen to grow and thrive is far from complete. Neutrophils infiltrate most tissues following circadian patterns as part of normal repair, regulation of microbiota, or immune surveillance and become more numerous after infection. Neutrophils are responsible for maintaining vaginal immunity. Specific to the vagina, neutrophils continuously infiltrate at high levels, alth

Identification of Trichosporon yeast isolates from superficial infections in male patients from Central Brazil: an approach to the diversity of infections caused by this basidiomycete fungus.

The genus Trichosporon are currently recognized as opportunistic pathogens capable of causing superficial "white piedra" infections and potentially fatal invasive diseases (Trichosporonosis). In this work, determine the agent Trichosporon spp. isolated from the skin and appendages of a male population group in the Central-West region of Brazil. The isolates were analyzed by phenotypic, biochemical and molecular methods. Twenty-five strains of Trichosporon were isolated: T. asahii (18; 72%), followed by T. inkin (4; 16%) and T. faecale (3; 12%). Skin infections were the most affected (16; 64%)

A Novel Zinc (II) Porphyrin Is Synergistic with PEV2 Bacteriophage against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes life-threatening infections in individuals with compromised immune systems and exacerbates health concerns for those with cystic fibrosis (CF). PsA rapidly develops antibiotic resistance; thus, novel therapeutics are urgently needed to effectively combat this pathogen. Previously, we have shown that a novel cationic Zinc (II) porphyrin (ZnPor) has potent bactericidal activity against planktonic and biofilm-associated PsA cells, and disassembles the biofilm matrix via interactions with eDNA In the present study, we

Biologically Relevant Murine Models of Chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa Respiratory Infection.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is an opportunistic pathogen and the leading cause of infection in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The ability of P. aeruginosa to evade host responses and develop into chronic infection causes significant morbidity and mortality. Several mouse models have been developed to study chronic respiratory infections induced by P. aeruginosa, with the bead agar model being the most widely used. However, this model has several limitations, including the requirement for surgical procedures and high mortality rates. Herein, we describe novel and adapted biologi

Metaproteomic Analysis of Nasopharyngeal Swab Samples to Identify Microbial Peptides in COVID-19 Patients.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, impaired immunity and medical interventions resulted in cases of secondary infections. The clinical difficulties and dangers associated with secondary infections in patients necessitate the exploration of their microbiome. Metaproteomics is a powerful approach to study the taxonomic composition and functional status of the microbiome under study. In this study, the mass spectrometry (MS)-based data of nasopharyngeal swab samples from COVID-19 patients was used to investigate the metaproteome. We have established a robust bioinformatics workflow within the Galaxy p

Prevalence of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis in fibrocavitary pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a global health issue. While the lungs are the most commonly affected, infections can also affect other organs. Because of the rise in immunocompromised hosts, the number of opportunistic infections has skyrocketed. In instances of aspergilloma and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is the most usually linked condition. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The current cross-sectional study was conducted on 42 study participants from January 2018 to June 2019. RESULTS: Aspergilloma was observed in two participants (4.8%) of the study po

Prevalence of Enterococci and Vancomycin Resistance in the Throat of Non-Hospitalized Individuals Randomly Selected in Central Italy.

Enterococci are commonly found in the environment and humans as a part of the normal microbiota. Among these, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium can convert into opportunistic pathogens, making them a major cause of nosocomial infections. The rapid diffusion of vancomycin-resistant strains and their impact on nosocomial settings is of considerable concern. Approximately one-third of the E. faecium infections in Italy are caused by vancomycin-resistant strains. This study explored the hypothesis that the oral cavity could represent a silent reservoir of virulent enterococci. A sampl

3-Hydroxy coumarin demonstrates anti-biofilm and anti-hyphal efficacy against Candida albicans via inhibition of cell-adhesion, morphogenesis, and virulent genes regulation.

Candida albicans, a common fungus of human flora, can become an opportunistic pathogen and causes invasive candidiasis in immunocompromised individuals. Biofilm formation is the prime cause of antibiotic resistance during C. albicans infections and treating biofilm-forming cells is challenging due to their intractable and persistent nature. The study intends to explore the therapeutic potential of naturally produced compounds by competitive marine bacteria residing in marine biofilms against C. albicans biofilm. To this end, 3-hydroxy coumarin (3HC), a compound identified from the cell-free cu
