Perceptions and experiences of patients receiving oral chemotherapy.

Although many patients prefer orally administered cancer therapy (including oral chemotherapy) because of its convenience, the shift from hospital to home-based administration creates concerns. This article explores the perceptions and experiences of oral chemotherapy users and their caregivers to assess vulnerabilities and improvement opportunities at each stage of the medication process: choosing oral chemotherapy, prescribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring. The authors recruited 15 current and former oral chemotherapy users, as well as caregivers who administered the medications

Contraceptive choice and prevalence of cervical dysplasia and carcinoma in situ.

Whether use of oral contraceptives is associated with subsequent development of cervical neoplasia is an important public health question. Before evaluating this issue, we must determine if choosing oral contraceptives identifies a woman who is intrinsically at high risk of developing cervical neoplasia. We have examined the demographic and reproductive characteristics as well as cervical premalignant changes manifest by 15- to 44-year-old black women who enrolled in a public family-planning clinic. When compared to IUD acceptors, oral contraceptive acceptors did not have a disproportionately

The dynamics of the female microbiome: unveiling abrupt changes of microbial domains across body sites from prepartum to postpartum phases.

UNLABELLED: The microbial ecosystem of women undergoes enormous changes during pregnancy and the perinatal period. Little is known about the extent of changes in the maternal microbiome beyond the vaginal cavity and its recovery after birth. In this study, we followed pregnant women [maternal prepartum (mpre), n = 30] into the postpartum period [1 month postpartum, maternal postpartum (mpost), n = 30]. We profiled their oral, urinary, and vaginal microbiome; archaeome; mycobiome; and urinary metabolome and compared them with those of nonpregnant (np) women (n = 29). Overall, pregnancy status (

Tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and associated factors among Chinese adolescents: a nationwide cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste has become the most important way to provide the anti-caries effect of fluoride around the world. China has promoted the use of fluoridated toothpaste since 1989. However, there are few studies on the national profile of use of fluoridated toothpaste and related factors in Chinese adolescents. We carried out this study to investigate oral hygiene behaviours, especially the status of tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and its correlates among adolescents, based on data from the latest Nation Oral Health Survey in mainland China. Hyperemesis gravidarum and the dental patient.

Introduction Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe debilitating form of pregnancy sickness that affects around 3% of pregnancies annually. The annual cost to the National Health Service of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy has been estimated to be up to £62 million. Whilst the general focus of national guidance remains on the systemic management of HG, there is little recognition in the literature of the effects of hyperemesis and the oral cavity.Clinical features The effects of prolonged vomiting can result in malnutrition, electrolyte imbalances and weight loss, in addition to the effects o

Smoking-induced microbial dysbiosis: a key driver of systemic diseases and emerging therapeutic opportunities.

Tobacco use, including both traditional and electronic cigarettes, profoundly alters host-microbiota interactions, contributing to the pathogenesis of various systemic diseases. Smoking-induced microbial dysbiosis impacts multiple anatomical sites, including the oral cavity, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal system, driving disease progression through mechanisms such as immune modulation, chronic inflammation, and metabolic dysregulation. This review examines the disruption of microbial ecosystems by smoking, with a focus on the imbalance between beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms.

Fungal Diversity and Interactions in the Nasal and Oral Cavities of Individuals with Allergic Rhinitis, Asthma and Healthy Controls.

Allergic rhinitis and asthma are common chronic airway diseases that present significant public health challenges. Previous research has shown how the nasal and oral mycobiomes influence the onset, progression and severity of these two conditions, but no study so far has directly compared those mycobiomes within the same cohort during health and disease. To address this gap, I analyzed next-generation fungal ITS sequence data from 349 participants, including individuals with allergic rhinitis, asthma, and healthy controls. The nasal and oral mycobiomes showed a great overlap in composition but
