Adsorption and desorption of chromium with humic acid coated iron oxide nanoparticles.

Presence of carcinogenic chromium, i.e., Cr(VI), in different industrial effluents necessitates design and development of effective abatement technologies. Nanosorbent consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles functionalized with soil-derived humic acid was employed for removal of Cr(VI). The point of zero charge for both humic acid and nanoparticles as estimated from pH shift experiments was between pH 8 and 9. Adsorption isotherm from batch experiments at neutral pH followed Langmuir model with projected maximum adsorption capacities for humic acid coated nanoparticles (24.13 mg/g) much higher

Surface-Engineered Super-Paramagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Chromium Removal.

BACKGROUND: Super-paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are widely used metal nanoparticles for various applications for its magnetic property and biocompatibility. In recent years, pollution of our environment especially with heavy metals in waterbodies has become a major threat and has left us very minimal sources of freshwater to drink. SPIONs or surface modified SPIONs can be used to remove these heavy metals. METHODS: SPIONs were synthesized by co-precipitation method and further coated with a biopolymer, chitosan. Chromium solution was treated with the synthesized SPIONs to stu

Electrochemical oxidation as a post treatment for biologically tannery wastewater in batch reactor.

Tannery wastewater is known to contain high concentrations of organic compounds, heavy metals, nitrogen, sulphur, chromium, and many other chemicals. Both aerobic and anaerobic biological approaches have proven ineffective in the treatment of tannery wastewater due to the high salinity and toxic chemicals contained within the medium. Electrochemical oxidation presents a promising method for solving this problem. High pollutant removal efficiency, low energy consumption, and high electrode stability are three important factors supporting the feasibility of an efficient electrochemical treatment

Oxidative and histopathological effects of the application of electrosurgical devices to the penile tissue of rats.

INTRODUCTION: This study was performed to evaluate the oxidative and histopathological changes that occur following the application of electrosurgical devices (monopolar or bipolar cautery) to penile tissue. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen Wistar albino male rats were randomly distributed into three groups. In the control group (CG, n = 6), all penile tissues were sampled without any additional process following the administration of anesthesia. In the monopolar cautery group (MPG, n = 6), a 15-W cauterization process lasting 5 s was performed on an approximately 2 mm2 area of the ventral side

Dynamic charge and oxidation state of Pt/CeO2 single-atom catalysts.

The catalytic activity of metals supported on oxides depends on their charge and oxidation state. Yet, the determination of the degree of charge transfer at the interface remains elusive. Here, by combining density functional theory and first-principles molecular dynamics on Pt single atoms deposited on the CeO2 (100) surface, we show that the common representation of a static metal charge is oversimplified. Instead, we identify several well-defined charge states that are dynamically interconnected and thus coexist. The origin of this new class of strong metal-support interactions is the relat

CD13 deficiency leads to increased oxidative stress and larger atherosclerotic lesions.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory cardiovascular disorder characterized by accumulation of lipid-loaded macrophages in the intima. Prolonged accumulation leads to apoptosis of macrophages and eventually to progression of lesion development. Prevention of macrophage accumulation within the intima has been shown to reduce lesion formation. Since CD13 mediates trafficking of macrophages to sites of injury and repair, we tested the role of CD13 in atherosclerosis. METHODS: CD13+/+Ldlr-/- and CD13-/-Ldlr-/- (low density lipoprotein receptor) mice were fed basal or high fat di

Variable carbon and chlorine isotope fractionation in TCE co-metabolic oxidation.

Identifying co-metabolic TCE oxidation in polluted groundwater is challenging due to lack of indicative by-products. This challenge may theoretically be resolved if the oxidation process can be characterized by a distinct dual isotope enrichment. In this work, we aimed to explore the carbon and chlorine isotope effects associated with TCE oxidation by a variety of oxygenases. These included pure strains and enrichment cultures of methane, toluene and ammonia oxidizers, as well as experiments with crude extracts. Isotope effects determined for TCE oxidation by toluene and ammonia oxidizers were

Correlation of oxidation-reduction potential with hormones, semen parameters and testicular volume.

Seminal oxidative stress (OS) is a major cause of male factor infertility and can be measured as oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Studies showed significant negative relationships of ORP with sperm count, motility or DNA integrity. Since these parameters are also positively or negatively associated with reproductive hormones follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinising hormone (LH), testosterone, testicular volume and the occurrence of varicocele, it is important to understand the mechanistic relationship between ORP and hormonal and/or testicular parameters. Therefore, we studied the r

Tolerogenic signaling of alveolar macrophages induces lung adaptation to oxidative injury.

BACKGROUND: Inhaled oxidative toxicants present in ambient air cause airway epithelial injury, inflammation, and airway hyperresponsiveness. Effective adaptation to such environmental insults is essential for the preservation of pulmonary function, whereas failure or incomplete adaptation to oxidative injury can render the host susceptible to the development of airway disease. OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore the mechanisms of airway adaptation to oxidative injury. METHODS: For a model to study pulmonary adaptation to oxidative stress-induced lung injury, we exposed mice to repeated nose-only

Administration of nicotinamide riboside prevents oxidative stress and organ injury in sepsis.

AIMS: Sepsis-caused multiple organ failure remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), which is important in regulating oxidative stress. This study investigated whether administration of NR prevented oxidative stress and organ injury in sepsis. METHODS: Mouse sepsis models were induced by injection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) or feces-injection-in-peritoneum. NR was given before sepsis onset. Cultured macrophages and endothelial cells were incubated with various agents. RE

Oxidative Stress Markers Patients with Parotid Gland Tumors: A Pilot Study.

Salivary gland tumors account for 3-6% of tumors of the head and neck. About 80% of salivary gland tumors occur in parotid glands. Oxidative stress (OS) is implicated in the origin, development, and whole-body effects of various tumors. There are no data on the occurrence of OS in the parotid gland tumors. The aim of this study was to ascertain if whole-body OS accompanies parotid gland tumors, based first of all on oxidative modifications of blood serum proteins and other markers of OS in the serum of the patients. The group studied included 17 patients with pleomorphic adenoma, 9 patients wi

Disorders of mitochondrial long-chain fatty acid oxidation and the carnitine shuttle.

Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is an essential pathway for energy production, especially during prolonged fasting and sub-maximal exercise. Long-chain fatty acids are the most abundant fatty acids in the human diet and in body stores, and more than 15 enzymes are involved in long-chain fatty acid oxidation. Pathogenic mutations in genes encoding these enzymes result in a long-chain fatty acid oxidation disorder in which the energy homeostasis is compromised and long-chain acylcarnitines accumulate. Symptoms arise or exacerbate during catabolic situations, such as fasting, illness and (endu

Role of oxidative stress in the process of vascular remodeling following coronary revascularization.

Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), including balloon angioplasty and implantation of both bare metal and drug eluting coronary stents, are associated with risk of restenosis and in-stent thrombosis. A better understanding of signals that regulate cellular proliferation, neointimal formation and vessel wall thickening following PCI may contribute to identify novel preventive and therapeutic strategies aimed to reduce the atherosclerosis progression and the consequent vascular sequelae. Among the possible mechanisms, an increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is associated with

Influence of hypercholesterolemia on serum antibodies against oxidized LDL in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL; oxLDL) appears to play a key role in the early development of atherosclerosis. Increased serum antibodies against the oxLDL (anti-oxLDL antibodies) have been found in adults with atherosclerotic disease, as well as in healthy adults. The clinical significance and its precise role (atherogenic or atheroprotective), however, have not yet been clarified. This aim of this study was therefore to evaluate anti-oxLDL antibodies in healthy children and adolescents with and without hypercholesterolemia. METHODS: The study involved 312 subjects
