Withdrawal-associated injury site pain (WISP): a descriptive case series of an opioid cessation phenomenon.

Withdrawal pain can be a barrier to opioid cessation. Yet, little is known about old injury site pain in this context. We conducted an exploratory mixed-methods descriptive case series using a web-based survey and in-person interviews with adults recruited from pain and addiction treatment and research settings. We included individuals who self-reported a past significant injury that was healed and pain-free before the initiation of opioids, which then became temporarily painful upon opioid cessation-a phenomenon we have named withdrawal-associated injury site pain (WISP). Screening identified

Evaluation of Antinociceptive and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Phytosterol Present in Chloroform Extract of Phyllanthus Maderaspatensis.

Inflammation and pain is a common cause of medical consultation which generally occurs when a tissue is injured. In recent scenario, attention has been paid for screening new drugs with analgesic activity from plant sources, to reduce or treat pain with less adverse effects than allopathic drugs. The objectives of this research work was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of phytosterol present in chloroform extract of Phyllanthus maderaspatensis (CEPM) through carrageenan-induced hind paw oedema and hot plate method in male wistar rats. The test groups received CEPM

Activation of the trigeminal α2-adrenoceptor produces sex-specific, estrogen dependent thermal antinociception and antihyperalgesia using an operant pain assay in the rat.

Higher prevalence of several pain disorders in women and sexual dimorphism in G-protein coupled receptor-induced analgesia has been reported. We have previously shown that α2-adrenoceptor-induced antinociception is sex-specific and attenuated by estrogen in the female rat. However, this evidence was obtained using reflexive withdrawal-based nociceptive assays conducted on restrained animals that may not involve cerebral processing. Hence, we evaluated whether activation of the trigeminal α2-adrenoceptor produces sex-specific antinociceptive and antihyperalgesic effects in the orofacial region

Analgesic Activity of Novel GABA Esters after Transdermal Delivery.

Analgesic activity of novel GABA esters with l-menthol (1), thymol (2), carvacrol (3) and guaiacol (4) was investigated by pharmacological models of thermal and chemical stimuli in mice after topical application in an ointment (2% w/w). The initial terpenes - l-menthol (5), thymol (6), carvacrol (7) and guaiacol (8) have also been studied under the same experimental conditions. All studied compounds were found to produce an antinociceptive effect in both thermal- and chemical-induced models of acute pain after their topical application. In the hot plate test, compound 1 demonstrated maximum an

Nursing Care of Women With Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome.

Interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome is a chronic condition affecting approximately 3.3 million women in the United States. It is defined by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases as "urinary pain that can't be attributed to other causes such as infection or urinary stones." Because of the intimate nature of the symptoms, women are often reluctant to seek treatment. When they do, they require a care provider with specialized nursing skills. Nursing practice based on carefully reviewed literature will result in the provision of comprehensive and compassio

Endometrial injury for pregnancy following sexual intercourse or intrauterine insemination.

BACKGROUND: Intentional endometrial injury is currently being proposed as a technique to improve the probability of pregnancy in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Endometrial injury is often performed by pipelle biopsy or a similar technique, and is a common, simple, gynaecological procedure that has an established safety profile. However, it is also known to be associated with a moderate degree of discomfort/pain and requires an additional pelvic examination. The effectiveness of this procedure outside of ART, in women or couples a

Prospective Mediation Models of Sleep, Pain, and Daily Function in Children With Arthritis Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep is an emerging area of concern in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Research shows the presence of poor sleep quality and related adverse outcomes in pediatric pain populations, including JIA, but few studies have examined the prospective patterns of association between sleep and associated outcomes. This prospective study evaluated the direction and magnitude of associations between subjective sleep characteristics (sleep quality, difficulty initiating sleep, and sleep duration), pain intensity, and functional limitations in children with JIA. We hypothesize

Assessment of pain and stress intensity among women with ovarian endometriomas versus teratomas.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, numerous studies have considered endometriosis to be a subclinical, local inflammatory process in the pelvic peritoneum, the main symptom of which is pain. OBJECTIVES: To assess pain intensity and pain-related stress in women with ovarian endometriomas versus teratomas. METHODS: In total, 860 women (18 to 38 years of age) treated laparoscopically for lesions in the adnexa between September 2006 and November 2013 were included in the present study. After an intraoperative review of their histopathological lesions, the patients were divided into two study groups: g

Chronic Constriction Injury of the Rat's Infraorbital Nerve (IoN-CCI) to Study Trigeminal Neuropathic Pain.

Animal models are important tools to study the pathophysiology and pharmacology of neuropathic pain. This manuscript describes the surgical and behavioral procedures to study trigeminal neuropathic pain in rats. To meet the specificity of trigeminal neuropathic pain syndromes, the infraorbital nerve (IoN) is subjected to a chronic constriction injury (CCI) by loosely ligating the nerve. An intra-orbital approach is presented here to expose and ligate the IoN in the orbital cavity. After IoN ligation, rats exhibit changes in spontaneous behavior and in response to von Frey hair stimulation that

Effect of patellar strap and sports tape on pain in patellar tendinopathy: A randomized controlled trial.

Numerous athletes with patellar tendinopathy (PT) use a patellar strap or sports tape during sports. This study's aim was to investigate the short-term effect of these orthoses on patellar tendon pain. Participants performed the single-leg decline squat, vertical jump test, and triple-hop test under four different conditions (patellar strap, sports tape, placebo, and control). Subsequently, participants practiced sports as usual for 2 weeks; during 1 week, they were assigned to one of the four conditions. Pain was measured with the visual analog scale (VAS). In total, 97 athletes with PT [61%
