Cortical plasticity of the tactile mirror system in borderline personality disorder.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show alterations in empathic abilities, potentially involving automatic simulation processes supported by mirror-like mechanisms in the somatosensory domain. Within the tactile mirror system (TaMS), observing touch on another person's body activates cortical regions involved in tactile perception, including the primary somatosensory cortex (S1). Although mirror-like alterations have been suggested in BPD, the underlying mechanisms of plasticity remain underexplored. Here, we used a cross-modal paired associative stimulation (cm-PAS) protoc

Normal Visual Acuity and Electrophysiological Contrast Gain in Adults with High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder.

A common neurodevelopmental disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is defined by specific patterns in social perception, social competence, communication, highly circumscribed interests, and a strong subjective need for behavioral routines. Furthermore, distinctive features of visual perception, such as markedly reduced eye contact and a tendency to focus more on small, visual items than on holistic perception, have long been recognized as typical ASD characteristics. Recent debate in the scientific community discusses whether the physiology of low-level visual perception might explain such

[Bilateral non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy during treatment of viral hepatitis C with pegylated interferon and Ribavirin].

INTRODUCTION: Hepatitis C is a serious viral infection, for which the current treatment is based on the combination of pegylated interferon (IFN) and Ribavirin(®). Ophthalmic complications observed with PEG-IFN are infrequent and of variable prognosis. They often include an ischemic retinopathy with typical cotton-wool spots, hemorrhage and retinal edema, and rarely acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy as illustrated by our report. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 51-year-old man followed for chronic active hepatitis C, who presented in the fourth month of treatment with

Paired responses to intravitreal bevacizumab in diabetic macular edema: predictors of response in the fellow eye.

BACKGROUND: Factors predictive for response of diabetic macular edema (DME) to intravitreal bevacizumab (IVB) remain unclear. In this study, we assess the predictability of DME response to IVB based on the response to IVB in a previously treated fellow eye and other known pre-injection factors in (DME). METHODS: Retrospective chart review was conducted on 28 patients (56 eyes) with bilateral DME who underwent bilateral IVB therapy. Responses in both eyes were measured by change in central subfield thickness (CSFT) via optic coherence tomography (OCT), and change in visual acuity. Age, lens st
