Predictors of Quality of Life Among Middle-Aged Saudi Women: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Middle-aged women in Saudi Arabia are navigating a significant period of life transition during the rapid socioeconomic shift driven by the Saudi Vision 2030. Evidence indicates that chronic diseases are associated with poor quality of life (QoL), whereas competing employment and family responsibilities may further influence well-being. Psychosocial resources, including life satisfaction, family role satisfaction, and social support, are important predictors of QoL. Although clinical research often focuses on the physiological changes during this stage, the hierarchical influence o

Expanding the methodological repertoire: Integrating multimodal approaches in genetic counseling research.

This paper highlights the importance of methodological diversity in the field of genetic counseling (GC) and demonstrates how alternative multimodal approaches can serve as valuable additions to the GC research toolkit. We use examples from four separate qualitative GC projects, in the United Kingdom and South Africa, to highlight how different multimodal methods such as photo elicitation (PE) and graphic elicitation (GE), body mapping (BM), and conversation analysis (CA) can be incorporated into GC research and how they can produce novel ways for understanding practice, services, and patient

EXPRESS: Beyond the bowl: behavioural, sensory and environmental strategies to support healthy ageing in cats.

Ageing in cats brings a shift in clinical priorities: While extending lifespan remains a primary concern for many owners, the clinical goal moves toward safeguarding healthspan, ensuring that added years are accompanied by maintained function and quality of life. With increasing numbers of aged cats, veterinarians face a growing incidence of dysrexia situations that markedly worsen prognosis, especially in the presence of comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease. Feeding difficulties in older cats rarely originate from the composition of the diet alone. Instead, they arise from a multifact

How do emergency care providers and law enforcement officers navigate the competing imperatives of saving lives and serving justice? A qualitative case study in a Ghanaian secondary hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Emergency care departments often navigate the dual imperatives of providing timely medical care and cooperating with police as law enforcement officers (LEOs) involved in injury-related cases. Using Strauss' negotiated order theory, we examined the engagements between clinicians and the police at the Upper West Regional Hospital in Ghana, analysing the structural and negotiation contexts shaping their interactions. DESIGN: We used a qualitative case study design. SETTING: The study was conducted at the Upper West Regional Hospital in Ghana. PARTICIPANTS: Participants included cli

High-reward, high-risk technologies? An ethical and legal account of AI development in healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Considering the disruptive potential of AI technology, its current and future impact in healthcare, as well as healthcare professionals' lack of training in how to use it, the paper summarizes how to approach the challenges of AI from an ethical and legal perspective. It concludes with suggestions for improvements to help healthcare professionals better navigate the AI wave. METHODS: We analyzed the literature that specifically discusses ethics and law related to the development and implementation of AI in healthcare as well as relevant normative documents that pertain to both eth

The appropriateness of self-care policy for urinary tract infections among women from racialised minorities and low-income households in the United Kingdom: A qualitative study.

ObjectivesUrinary tract infections (UTIs) can negatively impact quality of life, especially when recurring. Patients often seek medical advice to relieve painful symptoms. UTIs are also the second most common reason antibiotics are prescribed in English primary care. However, overuse and long-term use of antibiotics for suspected UTIs in women can lead to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, making future treatments less effective. The UK's 2019-24 Antimicrobial Resistance National Action Plan aims to raise public awareness about the risks of overusing antibiotics and encourages self-care for minor

From eligibility to diagnosis: candidacy and the complex journey of cerebral palsy diagnosis within primary care.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is an umbrella term for a group of permanent postural and movement conditions caused by non-progressive damage to the developing brain. Infants not identified with risk factors for CP around the time of birth are usually referred on from primary care after six months of age, essentially precluding early therapy. Candidacy, a seven-step dynamic theory, describes how individuals negotiate their eligibility for medical attention with themselves, others, and health services. This study aims to explore the CP diagnostic journey for community identified infants using

An Examination of Geographic Proximity to Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation in Rural Versus Urban Tennessee Counties.

BACKGROUND: Although outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (OCR) is associated with improved outcomes post myocardial infarction (MI), authors of limited US studies report OCR travel distance/time estimates with fewer providing rural-urban comparisons. OBJECTIVE: We examined travel distance/time to the closest OCR facility for each Tennessee county. METHODS: We identified n = 61 Tennessee OCR facilities through a Tennessee Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation list and a data scraping process using cardiac rehabilitation-related keywords. Medical assistance in dying in Canada: A review of regulatory practice standards and guidance documents for physicians.

BACKGROUND: Medical assistance in dying ("MAiD") became legal across Canada in 2016, and in Québec in 2015. Provincial/territorial regulatory bodies play a critical role in MAiD as they can issue binding requirements on health practitioners. Law and regulatory standards are the "twin pillars" of MAiD regulation, yet the content of MAiD practice standards for physicians is unstudied. DESIGN: This article analysed MAiD guidance for physicians from Canadian medical regulators (often called the "College of Physicians and Surgeons"), using a qualitative descriptive approach, informed by regulatory

Deficiency of Kif15 impairing synaptic development leads to mood disorder in mice.

The harmony of neuronal excitation and inhibition is essential for precise neuronal circuitry in the developmental brain, and thus affects the human emotion. Abnormalities of synaptic morphology directly affect neuronal function and contribute to a variety of psychiatric disorders. Previous studies have shown that Kif15 (Kinesin-12), a microtubule-associated motor protein, affects neurite growth, navigation, and branching during neuronal development, revealing the potential of Kif15 to influence neuronal dendritic morphology. A GWAS study in a European population showed that there were variant

Relationships between the qNOX, qCON, burst suppression ratio, and muscle activity index of the CONOX monitor during total intravenous anesthesia: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Processed electroencephalographic (EEG) indices can help to navigate general anesthesia. The CONOX (Fresenius Kabi) calculates two indices, the qCON (hypnotic level) and the qNOX (nociception). The CONOX also calculates indices for electromyographic (EMG) activity and EEG burst suppression (BSR). Because all EEG parameters seem to influence each other, our goal was a detailed description of parameter relationships. METHODS: We used qCON, qNOX, EMG, and BSR information from 14 patients receiving propofol anesthesia. We described index relationships with linear models, heat maps, an

Testing the efficacy of WORK-ON: vocational rehabilitation for people with chronic inflammatory arthritis in Denmark-protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Among people with chronic inflammatory arthritis (IA), up to 40% lose their job in the first few years after diagnosis of this condition and are hence at high risk of being permanently excluded from the labour market. Therefore, we developed a new context-specific vocational rehabilitation (VR) for people with IA. This 6 month VR (WORK-ON) includes the following: (1) an initial assessment and goal setting by a coordinating occupational therapist, who supports cooperation and coordination between relevant partners and navigation across primary and secondary care, (2) four group se

Feasibility test of WORK-ON: a vocational rehabilitation intervention for people with chronic inflammatory arthritis.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic inflammatory arthritis (IA) often have a reduced work ability. Consequently, they are at high risk of losing their jobs and being permanently excluded from the labor market. Therefore, we developed a new context-specific vocational rehabilitation intervention for people with IA based on the Medical Research Council's framework for complex interventions. This intervention is called "WORK-ON" and consists of: (1) Initial assessment and goal setting by an occupational therapist experienced in rheumatology rehabilitation; (2) coordinated support from the same occupa

Neurologic Recovery in MPS I and MPS II Mice by AAV9-Mediated Gene Transfer to the CNS After the Development of Cognitive Dysfunction.

The mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) are a group of recessively inherited conditions caused by deficiency of lysosomal enzymes essential to the catabolism of glycosaminoglycans (GAG). MPS I is caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha-L-iduronidase (IDUA), while MPS II is caused by a lack of iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS). Lack of these enzymes leads to early mortality and morbidity, often including neurological deficits. Enzyme replacement therapy has markedly improved the quality of life for MPS I and MPS II affected individuals but is not effective in addressing neurologic manifestations.

Does transbronchial lung cryobiopsy improve diagnostic yield of digital tomosynthesis-assisted electromagnetic navigation guided bronchoscopic biopsy of pulmonary nodules? A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchoscopic biopsies have limited sensitivity for small, peripheral lung nodules. Electromagnetic navigation guided bronchoscopy (ENB) with fluoroscopic digital tomosynthesis and a 1.1 mm cryoprobe for transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) may improve diagnostic yield. We evaluated the diagnostic yield and safety of this approach. METHODS: 42 patients (45 nodules) underwent sequential biopsies by transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA), then forceps biopsy (FB), and finally TBLC. Demographic data, nodule characteristics, biopsy results, and procedural complications were record

Utilizing 3D Slicer to incorporate tomographic images into GATE Monte Carlo simulation for personalized dosimetry in yttrium-90 radioembolization.

PURPOSE: Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is an important technique that can help design advanced and challenging experimental setups. GATE (Geant4 application for tomographic emission) is a useful simulation toolkit for applications in nuclear medicine. Transarterial radioembolization is a treatment for liver cancer, where microspheres embedded with yttrium-90 (90 Y) are administered intra-arterially to the tumor. Personalized dosimetry for this treatment may provide higher dosimetry accuracy compared to the conventional partition model (PM) calculation. However, incorporation of three-dimensional
