[Follow-up of the preterm child at 1 year of correct age: assessment of development risk].

Longitudinal follow-up of preterm neonates after discharge from Intensive Care satisfies the family's need for support and ensures an ongoing link with the hospital concerned, but must be based on a specific, sensitive and predictive screening program. We report a prospective cohort study in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) using the Perinatal Risk Inventory (PERI)1, at discharge. Of 87 consecutive newborn referred to the tertiary NICU at the Pediatrics Department of Padua University in 1993 (gestational age > or = 25 weeks, weight at birth < 1500 g), 65 (75%) survived: 54 cases

Psychosocial and Physiological Determinants of Continued Exclusive Breastfeeding at 6 Months' Corrected Age in Late Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is essential for neonatal survival and long-term development; however, late preterm infants (34+0-36+6 weeks of gestation) consistently exhibit lower breastfeeding persistence than term infants. Breastfeeding sustainability in this population is influenced by both psychosocial conditions and physiological readiness. This study aimed to identify modifiable psychosocial and physiological determinants-including prenatal breastfeeding intention, family caregiving support, skin-to-skin contact, workplace breastfeeding support, and the timing o

Re-Evaluating the Contraction Stress Test for Term Fetal Growth Restriction Fetuses: A Retrospective Study.

Background: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, yet optimal intrapartum management remains debated. The contraction stress test (CST) has been proposed as a tool to assess fetal tolerance to labor, but its prognostic value in FGR pregnancies is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the utility of CST in predicting perinatal outcomes among term fetuses with FGR and to compare these outcomes with those of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) fetuses. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of term singleton deliveries at a tertiary

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following intrapartum asphyxia: is it avoidable?

BACKGROUND: The proportion of term hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy arising during intrapartum fetal surveillance remains unclear. Moreover, recent Cochrane review and other studies emphasized the need for research on the impact of admission cardiotocography and highlighted the necessity for a definition of "avoidable perinatal brain injury". OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of intrapartum asphyxia on neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy occurrence and identify the proportion of cases that benefit from preventive measures. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective 20-year birth cohort study include

Placental pathology lesions: International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology vs Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine fetal growth restriction definitions.

BACKGROUND: Research on the definition of fetal growth restriction (FGR) has focused on predicting adverse perinatal outcomes. A significant limitation of this approach is that the individual outcomes of interest could be related to the condition and the treatment. Evaluation of outcomes that reflect the pathophysiology of FGR may overcome this limitation. OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic performance of the FGR definitions established by the International Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (ISUOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM) to predict placental his

[Effect of gestational weight gain in a cohort of pregnancy women with obesity operated and not operated for bariatric surgery].

Objective: to determine the effect of gestational weight gain and perinatal outcomes in obese women who underwent and did not undergo bariatric surgery. Material and methods: a retrospective observational cohort study was conducted. The gestational weight gain was classified as insufficient, adequate or excessive according to the guidelines of the United States Institute of Medicine: 4.99-9.07 kg for body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2. Weight gain was calculated as the difference between the weight at the first visit of the 1st trimester and the weight at the visit of the 3rd trimester. Outcomes

The Implications of a "Flat" Oral Glucose Tolerance Test Curve in Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether pregnant women who have "flat" oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) curves in pregnancy are at increased risk of maternal or neonatal adverse outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of the perinatal outcomes of pregnant women whose 100-g OGTT curve was "flat," defined by a fasting serum glucose level below 95 mg/dL and the remaining values below 100 mg/dL. We compared their perinatal outcomes to women whose OGTT curve was "normal." The primary outcomes compared were the prevalence of macrosomic and small for gestational

Childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and mother-infant neurophysiological and behavioral co-regulation during dyadic interaction: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mother's childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms have a negative impact on mother and infant's behaviors during dyadic interactions which may increase mother-infant neurophysiological and behavioral co-regulation difficulties, leading to dysregulated mother-infant interactions. This study was specifically designed to analyze: (1) the sociodemographic and obstetric factors associated with mother's childbirth-related PTSD symptoms; (2) mother-infant neurophysiological functioning and behavioral co-regulation during dyadic interaction; (3) the impact of mother

Maternal and perinatal outcomes following pre-Delta, Delta, and Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants infection among unvaccinated pregnant women in France and Switzerland: a prospective cohort study using the COVI-PREG registry.

BACKGROUND: SARS-CoV-2 positive pregnant women are at higher risk of adverse outcomes, but little evidence is available on how variants impact that risk. We aim to evaluate maternal and perinatal outcomes among unvaccinated pregnant women that tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, stratified by pre-Delta, Delta, and Omicron periods. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled women from March 2020 to September 2022. Exposure to the different SARS-CoV-2 variants was defined by their periods of predominance. The primary outcome was severe maternal adverse outcome defined as either intensive care unit ad

Preventable stillbirths and neonatal deaths in Malaysia: An analysis of the under-five mortality surveillance data 2015-2017.

INTRODUCTION: The under-five mortality (U5M) trend in Malaysia significantly declined from 30.0 per 1000 live births (1980) to 8.0 per 1000 live births (2004), and the trend plateaued over the next two decades. Stillbirths and neonatal deaths were the major contributors to U5M. Scarce literature addressing factors associated with preventable U5M in Malaysia. The objective of this study was to describe preventable stillbirths and neonatal mortality, the associated factors and recommendation for improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The U5M surveillance data from 2015 to 2017 was retrieved for Ma

A qualitative interview study on successful pregnancies in women with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in antenatal medicine and surgical management for conditions associated with spina bifida such as hydrocephalus have extended the lifespan for individuals with spina bifida (SB) into adulthood. Decisions and education regarding reproductive care and pregnancies for patients with spina bifida are increasingly important. Pregnancy in these patients can be particularly challenging due to physical limitations, previous abdominal surgery for urinary or bowel management and presence of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. To date, little research has examined the unique challenges

Reduced fetal growth velocities and the association with neonatal outcomes in appropriate-for-gestational-age neonates: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction is, despite advances in neonatal care and uptake of antenatal ultrasound scanning, still a major cause of perinatal morbidity. Neonates with birth weight > 10th percentile are assumed to be appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA), although many are at increased risk of perinatal morbidity, because of undetected mild restriction of growth potential. We hypothesized that within AGA neonates, reduced fetal growth velocities are associated with adverse neonatal outcome. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of singleton pregnancies, in the Maastricht University

Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) Project.

PURPOSE: The Early Life Exposure in Mexico to ENvironmental Toxicants (ELEMENT) Project is a mother-child pregnancy and birth cohort originally initiated in the mid-1990s to explore: (1) whether enhanced mobilisation of lead from maternal bone stores during pregnancy poses a risk to fetal and subsequent offspring neurodevelopment; and (2) whether maternal calcium supplementation during pregnancy and lactation can suppress bone lead mobilisation and mitigate the adverse effects of lead exposure on offspring health and development. Through utilisation of carefully archived biospecimens to measur

Maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnant women with PCOS: comparison of different diagnostic definitions.

STUDY QUESTION: Does the prevalence of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes vary in women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) according to different definitions? SUMMARY ANSWER: A comparison of different criteria revealed that there is a substantial risk for perinatal complications in PCOS women, regardless of the used definition. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Pregnant women with PCOS are susceptible to perinatal complications. At present, there are three main definitions for PCOS. So far, we are aware of only one study, which found that the elevated risk for complications varied wide
