Serological evidence for active Epstein-Barr virus infection in multifocal choroiditis.

Six patients, consisting of 4 males and 2 females with mean average age fo 29.20 years, with variable picture of multifocal choroiditis were serologically investigated for their association with Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) infection. IgG and IgM antibodies to EBV-Virus Capsid Antigen (VCA) were assayed by immunoperoxidase method on EBV infected lymphoblast cells (P3HR-1 Burkitt's lymphoma cell line). In these patients definite serological evidence of EBV infection with high titres of IgG and IgM antibodies to EBV-VCA was demonstrated suggestive of active continuing or persisting EBV infection.

Adenovirus and Epstein-Barr virus in lung disease.

The adenovirus and the Epstein-Barr virus are double-stranded DNA viruses capable of infecting the human respiratory tract and producing a wide spectrum of pulmonary disorders. We review the viral factors and viral-host interactions that may be involved in the pathogenesis of pulmonary disorders associated with adenoviral and Epstein-Barr virus infections, focusing on the possible role of acute, persistent, and latent infections. Adenovirus and Epstein-Barr virus have evolved a remarkable array of strategies to survive within the infected host, and an improved understanding of these strategies

Immunosuppression in murine malaria. I. Response to type III pneumococcal polysaccharide.

Acute Plasmodium yoelii yoelii and chronic Plasmodium berghei malaria infections of CBA mice were accompanied by a reduced capacity to give an antibody response to type III pneumococcal polysaccharide (SIII). The depression of response initiated by acute malaria persisted for several weeks after recovery from clinical infection. During chronic infection, and at the peak of acute parasitaemia, virtually no response to SIII was detected. A substance which crossreacted serologically with SIII was found in blood cells of infected mice. The results suggest that antigen-specific, as well as non-spec

Clearance of longstanding treatment-resistant warts during COVID-19 in a transplant recipient.

Human papillomavirus (HPV), a DNA virus, infects basal keratinocytes and causes common warts and as well as malignancies of skin and mucous membranes. Although many treatment options are available, persistent HPV infections are common among transplant recipients. Herein, we present a patient with a 15-year history of treatment-resistant warts that regressed during COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) treatment.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis and infection of an aortic graft prosthesis: diagnosis and therapeutic problems.

The occurrence of a retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) after an aorto-bifemoral bypass is unusual. A case of RPF as a complication of an infection of the graft prosthesis is reported. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging prove useful in diagnosing graft infection: they may reveal periprosthetic gas or perigraft fluid persisting for several months after surgery. However, they may fail when they are performed too early, and repeat performance is suggested.

[Reiter's syndrome. Description of 2 cases with Chlamydia trachomatis infection].

Two cases of Reiter's syndrome that followed chlamydial infection are reported. The presence of ocular and genitourinary symptoms that suggest Reiter's disease is common, as the presence of histocompatibility antigen HLA B 27. Both cases had a particularly favourable course. The peculiar persistence of IgA anti-Chlamydia antibodies for relatively long periods of time induce the Authors to advance a hypothesis of use in chronic chlamydial infection diagnosis.

Autonomic neuropathy after rubella infection.

A woman with autonomic neuropathy after rubella infection is described. She had features of both sympathetic and parasympathetic impairment, the major problems being postural hypotension, abdominal and parotid pain, and fatigue. Autonomic dysfunction persisted 38 months after the rubella infection with minimal response to treatment. The literature relating to autonomic neuropathy is reviewed, and the similarities of this patient's condition to the Guillain-Barré syndrome are discussed.

Post-viral myocarditis.

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium characterized by complex histological, immunological and molecular changes occur that may ultimately lead to post-viral cardiomyopathy, a specific phenotype of dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure (HF) after a viral infection. Viral infections remain a major cause, with pathogens like parvovirus B19, human herpesvirus 6, and enteroviruses frequently associated with both acute myocarditis and its progression to chronic myocardial dysfunction. This review aims to provide an overview of the mechanisms linking viral myocarditis to the de

Breaking the cycle: Determinants and opportunities for sustainable control of cystic echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains one of the most persistent neglected zoonoses despite profound knowledge of the life cycle of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato and the availability of well-established control tools. Persistence of CE is driven by interacting barriers, i.e., rapid reinfection of dogs, continued access of dogs to infected offal and carcasses, informal slaughter, suboptimal surveillance feedback, fragmented institutional responsibility, and misaligned economic incentives. These constraints are especially evident in sheep-farming and agro-pastoral systems, where dogs, livestoc

Long COVID in children and young people: then and now.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: On 11 March 2020, the WHO characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic. A clinical case definition for post-COVID-19 condition in children and adolescents by expert consensus was agreed by the WHO in 2023. It is now 5 years since the WHO declared a pandemic, and this review aims to summarize key advances in our understanding of long COVID over those 5 years. RECENT FINDINGS: That symptoms could persist in adults and CYP for months after initial infection was first reported in Autumn 2020. Long COVID in adults is frequently characterized by symptoms of fatigue and breathlessness but

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons promotes the progression of low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: A population-based cohort study in China.

Low-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN1) is an early stage of cervical cancer development. Previously, we reported that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) increases the risk of cervical precancerous lesions, especially in females with a high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection. However, the effects of PAHs on CIN1 progression remain unclear. A community-based prospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate the role of exposure to PAHs in the progression of CIN1. A total of 564 patients diagnosed with CIN1 were followed-up at 6, 12, and 24 months, post-di

Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage might be associated with vitamin D receptor polymorphisms in type 2 diabetes.

Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms have been associated with susceptibility to several diseases, including type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and various infections. The study investigated whether VDR gene polymorphisms influence nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in individuals with T2D, an important source for bloodstream, surgical site and other nosocomial infections. In 173 patients with T2D genotyped for the VDR gene polymorphisms on FokI (rs10735810) F>f, BsmI (rs1544410) B>b, ApaI (rs7975232) A>a, and TaqI (rs731236) T>t, a nasal swab was obtained to detect colo

pH-mediated potentiation of aminoglycosides kills bacterial persisters and eradicates in vivo biofilms.

BACKGROUND: Limitations in treatment of biofilm-associated bacterial infections are often due to subpopulation of persistent bacteria (persisters) tolerant to high concentrations of antibiotics. Based on the increased aminoglycoside efficiency under alkaline conditions, we studied the combination of gentamicin and the clinically compatible basic amino acid L-arginine against planktonic and biofilm bacteria both in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: Using Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli bioluminescent strains, we studied the combination of L-arginine and gentamicin

Comprehensive analysis of class I and class II HLA antigens and chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Following an acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, clearance or persistence is determined in part by the vigor and breadth of the host immune response. Since the human leukocyte antigen system (HLA) is an integral component of the immune response, we hypothesized that the highly polymorphic HLA genes are key determinants of viral clearance. HLA class I and II genes were molecularly typed in 194 Caucasian individuals with viral persistence and 342 matched controls who had cleared the virus. A single class I allele, A*0301 (odds ratio [OR], 0.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30 to 0.72; P

Selective tolerance to the E1 protein of rubella virus in congenital rubella syndrome.

Rubella virus (RV) infection of the fetus in the first trimester of pregnancy usually results in severe birth defects collectively termed Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) and is frequently associated with prolonged RV persistence in the infant. Immunological tolerance to RV is believed to contribute to viral persistence, but the mechanism for this is unknown. In this study, RV-specific antibody responses in CRS patients and healthy controls who had experienced Rubella infection postnatally were compared to determine if there were differences that might account for RV persistence in the former

Real-world evidence demonstrates an appropriate atrial fibrillation population for hybrid convergent approach versus stand-alone cryoballoon ablation: A long-term safety and efficacy study.

INTRODUCTION: A hybrid convergent approach (endocardial and epicardial ablation) demonstrated superior effectiveness in a recent randomized study for long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (LSPAF). Yet, there is a lack of real-world, long-term evidence as to which patients are best candidates for a hybrid convergent approach compared to standard endocardial cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation (CB PVI). METHODS AND RESULTS: This single-center, retrospective analysis spanning from 2010 to 2015 compared two distinctly different atrial fibrillation (AF) cohorts; one treated with stand-alon

Pump controlled retrograde trial off from VA-ECMO.

We describe our novel technique of Pump Controlled Retrograde Trial Off that relies on the retrograde flow to maintain circuit integrity and allow a longer trial off from venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support without circuit clot formation or significant patient hemodynamic compromise. This technique avoids the insertion of an arteriovenous bridge and the need to clamp the circuit. We present data on five neonatal patients who were trialled off using this method.

Overview: the biology of varicella-zoster virus infection.

Varicella-zoster virus infection is manifested initially as chickenpox. The virus persists for life in sensory nerve ganglia, from which it reactivates in many people to cause zoster. Among the many recognized complications of these infections, post-zoster neuralgia is the most frequently debilitating. The molecular events of virus replication, latency, and reactivation, and the pathogenesis of post-zoster neuralgia, are incompletely understood and inadequately addressed by current therapeutic strategies.

[Etiology and pathophysiology of post-traumatic bone infection].

The present study deals with etiology and pathophysiology of posttraumatic bone infections. Great importance is attached to the description of intracortical transformations. The authors underline that the chronic infection originates in disturbances of blood flow caused primarily in the corticalis by trauma or osteosynthesis. All further pathophysiologic processes have to be considered as an effort made by the organism to heal the damage. The pathophysiologic processes resulting in the different end stages (recovery, persisting necrosis, sequester) are described.

Babesiosis: malaria mimic.

Human infection with blood parasites of the genus Babesia can result in a hemolytic disease very similar to malaria. Laboratory diagnosis of babesiosis is dependent upon the detection and identification of the parasite in blood films. The distinguishing criteria are: lack of pigment in infected red blood cells; no circulating schizonts or gametocytes; "atypical" malarialike organisms; tetrad groups, rods, or exclamation-mark forms; and persisting parasitemia after treatment for malaria.
