The radiological appearance of mostly broad-based polyps in the rectosigmoid was studied in 35 patients. In all patients the diagnosis was histologically confirmed after surgical treatment. Conclusions on the histological tumour status could not be drawn either from surface structure, broadness of base and retraction of base, or from the base/height ratio. If the barium enema reveals stenosing changes of the terminal ileum and caecum, tuberculosis must be considered in differential diagnosis, even if pulmonary evidence of the illness is lacking. Since, however, radiographically no exclusive typical changes for the tuberculosis of the terminal ileum and caecum can be seen, the diagnosis must be checked histologically and bacteriologically. Under drug therapy an obvious decrease of the inflammation of the mucosa of the colon could be seen.

The term "Thoracic Outlet Syndrome" (TOS) applies to all neurological and vascular symptoms caused by compression of the nerves and vessels situated in the outlet (inlet) of the thorax and the costoclavicular area. The clinical and radiological results of 20 patients with acquired and congenital TOS are presented and the relevant literature is reviewed. The different radiological findings of plain chest X-ray, phlebography, intravenous DSA and arteriography are demonstrated with special emphasis on the vascular complications of TOS.

The authors report on a patient with confirmed Crohns disease in whom laparotomy was performed because of a large accumulation of contrast medium in the lower abdomen detected via gastrointestinal passage. Intraoperative findings were a large Meckels diverticulum and a megaileum as an organic correlate of the radiological findings.

In 1958 Caroli described the syndrome of congenital, either segmental or involving the entire bile duct system, saccular extensions of the intrahepatic bile ducts. He differentiated between two types of this disease pattern. The first form concerns pure cystic dilatations of the intrahepatic bile ducts, whereas the second one is combined with hepatic fibrosis and portal hypertension. Both types are characterised by cystic dilatations in the kidneys and in the extrahepatic bile ducts, pancreas and spleen.

The diseases most frequently resulting in a chronic shoulder-hand syndrome are definitely of a post-traumatic nature and are later - after a varying period - often combined with degenerative changes. The tendency to injury is enhanced by the particularly great mobility of the shoulder joint. Inflammatory changes - e.g. of bacterial, rheumatic origin - are much rarer. The authors present two patients with rare neoplastic lesions in the region of the shoulder-blade and show how the disease was identified via various differential diagnostic methods.

32 patients with traumatic injuries of the cervical spine were investigated by CT. All patients were initially examined by plain films. CT was definitely superior to conventional radiology in compressive fractures of vertebral bodies. In flexion-extension injuries CT was useful showing fractures of the posterior elements in great detail. Conventional tomography was superior to CT in patients with complex dislocations of vertebral bodies. In the absence of fracture CT failed to detect disruptions of ligaments, which were readily shown by functional examination.

Biliary ascariasis is a complication of intestinal ascariasis. This results in characteristic findings in the intravenous cholangiocholecystogram and in the sonogram. Characteristic signs of biliary ascariasis are, in the longitudinal section, the "strip sign", "spaghetti sign", "inner tube sign", and in transverse section "a bull's eye in the triple O". The helminth can travel from out of the biliary duct system back into the intestines, so that control examinations can even be negative.

Splenic rupture in infectious mononucleosis (Pfeiffer disease, or glandular fever) is a rare but life-threatening complication. The exact mechanism of rupture of the spleen is unknown to date. A case of a spontaneous, asymptomatic, subcapsular haematoma of the spleen of an eighteen-year old female with infectious mononucleosis is presented with special reference to the echographic findings. A complete remission without any complication was obtained. The contribution of the sonographic examination and follow-up in the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis is emphasised.

52 patients with cerebral tumours were examined by both CT and MR. Contrast media containing iodine were used in CT, whereas in MR a paramagnetic contrast medium (gadolinium-DTPA) was applied by IV injection. A comparison of CT and MR findings showed that with both methods it was often not possible to achieve sufficient visualization and delineation of tumour tissue without employing a contrast medium. Characteristic CT findings of intramedullary, intradural and epidural as well as of vertebragenic and paraspinal tumours are described, basing on literature and on the authors patient material. The present paper presents the clinical and radiological findings from a retrospective study of 18 children suffering from histiocytosis with skeletal involvement (20 lesions) treated between 1971 and 1983. The different forms of manifestation on the skull, vertebral column, and long bones are described and problems of differential diagnosis discussed. Possible forms of therapy are considered.

This paper demonstrates the diagnostic value of transvenous DSA in carotid body tumours. Angiographic results in 6 patients show that this method was of diagnostic significance in all cases; in 5 of 6 patients the angiographic diagnosis was confirmed by subsequent surgery. Transvenous DSA, the invasiveness of which is only minimal, is useful in outpatients for identifying obscure palpable tumours of the lateral neck. Unnecessary or even highly dangerous surgical diagnostic interventions can thus be prevented.

This report describes the case history of a woman with a large submucosal tumor in the ascending colon detected by barium enema radiography. Computed tomography (CT) identified the tumor as a submucosal lipoma characterised by its homogeneous fat-equivalent density with a CT number of -95 HU. This case proves that CT can be a definite diagnostic modality for differentiation between gastrointestinal lipomas and other solid or cystic tumors.

The reasonable use of computed tomography in the diagnosis of an enlarged retrorectal space was analysed in 92 cases. CT is useful in differentiation of a pathologically enlarged retrorectal space without mucosal lesions of the rectum. In this paper the advantages and disadvantages of different arteriographic methods, i.e. conventional angiography, intraarterial DSA and intravenous DSA, are discussed for the purpose of examining the extracranial supraaortic branches. The analysis of individual vascular regions in arteriography of the aortic arch is assessed. In addiction, the value of i.v. DSA is demonstrated, comparing own results with data in the literature. Indications of the three different angiographic techniques are outlined.

Spontaneous subcutaneous accumulations of air in the soft parts of the thorax during an asthmatic crisis (status asthmaticus) are rarely seen. The pathomechanism of the phenomenon, which may lead to the formation of an emphysema of the soft parts via the pneumomediastinum, is discussed, and the possible complications which must be taken into account are pointed out. The value of radiological examination of the thorax in children suffering from asthma bronchiale, is explained briefly.

The authors report on a case of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SDT). The most important clinical and radiological signs are described and the criteria for differential diagnosis listed. Among the bone dysplasias Maroteaux, Lamy and Bernhard distinguished in 1957 a discrete form which they called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda.
