Tidal flushing restores the physiological condition of fish residing in degraded salt marshes.

Roads, bridges, and dikes constructed across salt marshes can restrict tidal flow, degrade habitat quality for nekton, and facilitate invasion by non-native plants including Phragmites australis. Introduced P. australis contributes to marsh accretion and eliminates marsh surface pools thereby adversely affecting fish by reducing access to intertidal habitats essential for feeding, reproduction, and refuge. Our study assessed the condition of resident fish populations (Fundulus heteroclitus) at four tidally restricted and four tidally restored marshes in New England invaded by P. australis rela

Physiological characterization of lipid accumulation and in vivo ester formation in Gordonia sp. KTR9.

Previous work has demonstrated the feasibility of in vivo biodiesel synthesis in Escherichia coli, however, ethyl ester formation was dependent on an external fatty acid feedstock. In contrast to E. coli, actinomycetes may be ideal organisms for direct biodiesel synthesis because of their capacity to synthesize high levels of triacylglcerides (TAGs). In this study, we investigated the physiology and associated TAG accumulation along with the in vivo ability to catalyze ester formation from exogenous short chain alcohol sources in Gordonia sp. KTR9, a strain that possesses a large number of gen

[Histamine intolerance syndrome (HIS): plethora of physiological, pathophysiological and toxic mechanisms and their differentiation].

BACKGROUND: Non-immunological types of foodstuffs intolerance are reported by about 15-20% people of the population. The intolerance of histamine and to some extent of other biogenic amines (such as cadaverine, putrescine, tyramine etc.) plays an important role in the differential diagnosis of the foodstuff intolerances and has to be strictly separated from immunologically mediated foodstuffs reactions (foodstuffs allergies, 2-5% of the population). METHODS: Clinical data from the Erlangen interdisciplinary data register of allergic and chronic inflammatory gastro-intestinal diseases were ana

Physiological cardiac remodelling in response to endurance exercise training: cellular and molecular mechanisms.

Exercise training fosters the health and performance of the cardiovascular system, and represents nowadays a powerful tool for cardiovascular therapy. Exercise exerts its beneficial effects through reducing cardiovascular risk factors, and directly affecting the cellular and molecular remodelling of the heart. Traditionally, moderate endurance exercise training has been viewed to determine a balanced and revertible physiological growth, through cardiomyocyte hypertrophy accompanied by appropriate neoangiogenesis (the Athlete's Heart). These cellular adaptations are due to the activation of sig

Aberrant cortisol responses to physiological stimuli in patients presenting with bilateral adrenal incidentalomas.

Aberrant receptors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of several types of adrenal tumours. So far the presence of aberrant receptors has been investigated in patients with massively enlarged adrenals due to ACTH-independent macronodular adrenal hyperplasia (AIMAH) and unilateral adrenal adenomas associated with overt or subclinical Cushing's syndrome. The likelihood of aberrant responses in patients presenting with bilateral adrenal incidentalomas (BI) presenting as discrete solitary bilateral adenomas has not been thoroughly addressed. This is an observational cross-sectional prospectiv

Prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: correlation with physiological parameters.

The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). One hundred thirty-nine patients (101 male, mean age = 68.6 ± 9 years), with confirmed IPF and who were admitted to eight Pulmonary Departments in Greece between November 2005 and December 2006 were included in the study. Pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) was estimated by echocardiography, and PH was defined as PASP > 36 mmHg. We compared demographics, pulmonary function tests, NYHA functional status, 6-min walk distance (6MWD), B-type

The effects of attentional training on physiological stress recovery after induced social threat.

Social stress has been related to both physiological and psychological responses. The recovery of stress is influenced by the way environmental information is processed, i.e., what information is attended to and how it is interpreted. The present study investigated the effect of attention modification training on physiological stress recovery following induced stress. A group of applicants preparing for a job interview were randomly allocated to an attention training condition versus a control condition. Afterwards, they were asked to give an artificial job interview to a real life jury while

Acute physiologic effects of a stepwise recruitment maneuver in acute respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Stepwise recruitment maneuvers (RM) applied with high airway pressures may optimize lung recruitment, but this kind of intervention may lead to widely heterogeneous responses with possible side effects. To assess the clinical impact of these maneuvers, we performed a stepwise maximal-recruitment strategy superimposed on routine mechanical ventilation. METHODS: We studied 13 adults with early-phase acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS). We used pressure-control ventilation at an FiO(2) of 1. Starting from a Pplat/positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) of

Intraspecific variation of physiological and molecular response to cadmium stress in Populus nigra L.

Little is known about the variability of response to heavy metal stress within tree species, although it could be a key for a better understanding of tolerance mechanisms and for breeding. The aim of the present study was to characterize the natural variation of response to cadmium (Cd) in Populus nigra L. in order to understand the mechanisms of Cd tolerance. For that, two P. nigra genotypes, originating from contrasting environments in northern (genotype 58-861) and southern (genotype Poli) Italy, were exposed to Cd stress in hydroponics for 3 weeks. The effect of stress was estimated by mea

Controversies in the physiological basis of the 'anaerobic threshold' and their implications for clinical cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

This article reviews the notion of the 'anaerobic threshold' in the context of cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Primarily, this is a review of the proposed mechanisms underlying the ventilatory and lactate response to incremental exercise, which is important to the clinical interpretation of an exercise test. Since such tests are often conducted for risk stratification before major surgery, a failure to locate or justify the existence of an anaerobic threshold will have some implications for clinical practice. We also consider alternative endpoints within the exercise response that might be b

[Effects of thromboendarterectomy for post-embolic pulmonary hypertension on physiological dead space on exercise].

The effect of therapy on the modification of a functional parameter is an elegant method for assessing the causal relationship between functional abnormalities and symptoms. We report an analysis of the effects of thromboendarterectomy for post-embolic pulmonary arterial hypertension on exercise functional parameters. A patient (62 years) had post-embolic pulmonary hypertension documented by pulmonary angiography and right heart catheterization (PAP mean: 48 mmHg). Cardiopulmonary exercise testing demonstrated a decreased aerobic capacity (59% predicted), significant hyperventilation (VE/VO(2)

Prenatal exposure to LPS leads to long-lasting physiological consequences in male offspring.

Growing evidence suggests that early life events are critical determinants for disorders later in life. According to a comprehensive number of epidemiological/animal studies, exposure to lipopolysaccharide, causes alteration in pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal functioning and the hormonal system which may contribute to behavioral and neurological injuries. In this study we investigated the effects of lipopolysaccharide administration on physiological parameters in pregnant dams and their male offspring aged 9 weeks. In gestational Day 10, pregnant mice were inje

Peripartal hormonal changes in Alpine goats: a comparison between physiological and pathological parturition.

In this study, 31 pregnant Alpine does were used to investigate the peripartal plasma profiles of progesterone, estradiol-17β, 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2α) and cortisol, assessing differences between goats with physiological and pathological parturition. The goats were observed around the time of parturition; all peripartum abnormalities were recorded, and veterinary assistance was provided if necessary. Blood samples were collected every 12 h from 7 days before to 7 days after delivery, and plasma used for hormonal analysis by radioimmunoassay. Two animals died during the study, and their data were

Skeletal muscle IP3R1 receptors amplify physiological and pathological synaptic calcium signals.

Ca(2+) release from internal stores is critical for mediating both normal and pathological intracellular Ca(2+) signaling. Recent studies suggest that the inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate (IP(3)) receptor mediates Ca(2+) release from internal stores upon cholinergic activation of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) in both physiological and pathological conditions. Here, we report that the type I IP(3) receptor (IP(3)R(1))-mediated Ca(2+) release plays a crucial role in synaptic gene expression, development, and neuromuscular transmission, as well as mediating degeneration during excessive cholinergic

How valid is the AHRQ Patient Safety Indicator "postoperative physiologic and metabolic derangement"?

BACKGROUND: The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Patient Safety Indicator postoperative physiologic and metabolic derangement (PMD) uses ICD-9-CM codes to screen for potentially preventable acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis plus diabetes-related complications after elective surgery. Data on PMD's accuracy in identifying true events are limited. We examined the indicator's positive predictive value (PPV) in the Veterans Health Administration (VA). STUDY DESIGN: Trained abstractors reviewed medical records of 119 PSI software-flagged PMD cases. We calculated PPVs overall an

Physiologic reference ranges for captive black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus).

The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is a member of the order Rodentia and the family Sciuridae. Ecologically, prairie dogs are a keystone species in prairie ecology. This species is used as an animal model for human gallbladder disease and diseases caused by infection with Clostridium difficile, Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, and most recently, Orthopoxvirus. Despite increasing numbers of prairie dogs used in research and kept as pets, few data are available on their baseline physiology in animal facility housing conditions. To establish baseline physiologic reference

Physiologic 18F-FDG uptake in the fallopian tubes at mid cycle on PET/CT.

UNLABELLED: We observed bilateral pelvic foci of (18)F-FDG uptake (BiPF) exclusively in females--a finding not previously reported--and assessed the frequency, anatomic localization, and clinical significance of the uptake. METHODS: On (18)F-FDG PET/CT and coregistered contrast-enhanced CT scans of 159 females (age, 16-81 y), the presence of BiPF and their location were evaluated. The findings were correlated with the age and menstrual history of the patient. RESULTS: BiPF were seen in 14 (22%) of 63 patients up to 53 y old, predominantly at mid menstrual cycle, and were best coregistered to
