Hemodynamic effect of pimobendan following intramuscular and intravenous administration in healthy dogs: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Pimobendan is widely used for the treatment of dogs with heart failure via the oral route. A new injectable form of pimobendan is now available and its potential usefulness via intravenous route has been recently demonstrated in dogs. However, the cardiovascular effects of intramuscular (IM) administration of injectable pimobendan have not been investigated yet. HYPOTHESIS: IM administration of pimobendan may have the same hemodynamic effect as the IV route. METHODS: Six healthy Beagle dogs underwent a placebo-controlled double-blind crossover study. The early cardiovascular effe

Concentrated transdiagnostic and cross-disciplinary group treatment for patients with depression and with anxiety: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A number of treatment approaches have shown efficacy for depression and/or anxiety, yet there is a paucity of research on potentially cost-effective concentrated approaches. Based on our previous experience with concentrated treatment in disorders such as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and chronic fatigue, we proposed that this novel approach could be useful for other conditions, including depression and/or anxiety. As a pre-requisite for a future randomized controlled trial, the aim of this study was to investigate the acceptability, satisfaction and effectiveness of a transdiagnos

Pilot study of a novel transmembranous electromyography device for assessment of oral cavity and oropharyngeal muscles.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Electromyography (EMG) can provide valuable insights into the pathophysiology of oropharyngeal muscles in various disease states, but the invasive nature of the conventional needle EMG (nEMG) has its limitations in this setting. We aimed to examine the inter-rater reliability (IRR) of a novel transmembranous EMG (tmEMG) sensor as a non-invasive technique for assessment of oral cavity and oropharyngeal muscles for neuromuscular pathology. METHODS: The study was a prospective, cohort, pilot study with blinded data analysis in healthy participants (n = 6), patients with modera

The effect of fibrin glue on the quantity of drainage after thyroidectomy: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

PURPOSE: A seroma is a collection of exudates after surgical trauma in wound healing. Fibrin glue is used to prevent seroma by reducing the generation of exudate. However, the impact of fibrin glue on the prevention of seroma remains debatable. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled pilot trial to investigate the effect of the amount of fibrin glue used on the generation of exudate after thyroidectomy and the sample size of future definitive trials. METHODS: Between February and December 2020, 41 patients were enrolled; 21 patients in the low fibrin group and 20 in the high fibrin gr

Effects of Four Different EEG-Neurofeedback Reinforcement Types in Healthy Individuals - A Pilot Study.

EEG neurofeedback (EEG-NFB) is a promising tool for the treatment of depressive disorders. However, many methods for the presentation of neurobiological reactions are available and it is widely unknown which of these feedback options are preferrable. Moreover, the influence of motivation on NFB training success is insufficiently studied. This study analyzed the efficacy of a novel EEG protocol (FC3/Pz) based on findings for NFB in depression. The role of four feedback options (Rumination, Anxiety, Meditation Master, Moving Art) from the NFB software "Brain Assistant" and motivation in EEG-base

Postnatal Protein Intake as a Determinant of Skeletal Muscle Structure and Function in Mice-A Pilot Study.

Sarcopenia is characterised by an age-related decrease in the number of muscle fibres and additional weakening of the remaining fibres, resulting in a reduction in muscle mass and function. Many studies associate poor maternal nutrition during gestation and/or lactation with altered skeletal muscle homeostasis in the offspring and the development of sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to determine whether the musculoskeletal physiology in offspring born to mouse dams fed a low-protein diet during pregnancy was altered and whether any physiological changes could be modulated by the nutritiona

Transcutaneous Detection of Intramural Microchips for Tracking the Migration of the Equine Large Colon: A Pilot Study.

Colic remains the number one cause of mortality in horses, and large colon displacement including colonic volvulus is one of the leading causes for equine hospitalization and surgery. Currently, there is not an adequate model to study the pathophysiology of this condition. The objective of this proof-of-concept study was to determine if subserosal implantation of bioinert microchips in the large intestine would be detectable by a RFID (radio-frequency identification) receiver when the implanted microchips were adjacent to the body wall, thus identifying the location of the colon within the abd

A pilot study of local anesthesia training using a mixed-reality haptic fidelity model.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: One of the most difficult local anesthetic blocks to master in dentistry is the inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB). Historically, dental students have practiced local anesthesia on one another. At the University of Colorado, these practice sessions have been limited to one required laboratory session. The predictability and confidence of student IANB success have not been high in the past. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the impact of a novel IANB simulator, built on a three dimensional (3D)-printed mixed-reality haptic model, for second-year den

Effects of missing teeth and nasal septal deviation on maxillary sinus volume: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Tooth extraction and the projection of the tooth roots into the maxillary sinus are reported to greatly reduce the bone height from the alveolar ridge to the maxillary sinus floor, while missing teeth are reported to lead to the expansion of the maxillary sinus, all of which are important considerations during dental implant treatment for the maxillary molar region. Therefore, assessing the anatomical characteristics of the maxillary sinus acting as complicating factors is crucial before sinus augmentation. We conducted a three-dimensional examination of the effects of missing teeth a
