Airway Complications After Cervical Spine Surgery: A Focused Review on Recent Evidence and Perioperative Management.

Airway complications after cervical spine surgery are infrequent but potentially catastrophic. The mechanisms of postoperative airway compromise differ according to surgical approach, extent of surgery, and underlying cervical pathology and include prevertebral and airway soft-tissue edema, retropharyngeal hematoma, recurrent laryngeal nerve dysfunction, cervical malalignment, and restricted cervical mobility. In patients with concomitant cervical spinal cord injury or myelopathy, impaired respiratory mechanics and bulbar dysfunction may further increase airway vulnerability. Recent evidence s

Perioperative management of severe interstitial pneumonia for rectal surgery: a case report.

This report describes a case of rectal cancer with severe interstitial pneumonia (IP) and chronic pneumothorax. Acute exacerbation of IP is a serious postoperative complication and the consequences are extremely poor. To provide less invasive surgery and to prevent acute exacerbation of the IP, the patient received chemo-radiotherapy for controlling locally advanced tumor following low anterior resection under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia. Adequate epidural analgesia during the postoperative period had been shown and the epidural catheter was removed on the 3rd postoperative day. The pa

Foot TcPO2 response to lumbar sympathectomy in patients with focal ischemic necrosis.

We prospectively evaluated all patients with superficial foot necrosis of 1-3 cm and transcutaneous oxygen tension (TcPO2) values of <30 mmHg who received a sympathectomy as the primary treatment of their vascular occlusive disease. Preoperatively, and every 2-3 days in the postoperative period, measurement of TcPO2 of the forefoot was performed. Clinical success was defined as healing of the necrosis or healing of a toe amputation and avoidance of a major below-knee/above-knee amputation for 1 year. Ten patients were available for long-term evaluation. During the first 4-5 days, all patients

The clinical outcomes of using a new cross-linked hyaluronan gel in endoscopic frontal sinus surgery.

In endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) synechiae formation and ostial stenosis are frequently encountered. This is not uncommon after frontal recess and ostium interventions due to the narrow recess and difficult anatomy of the region. The goal of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of the new cross-linked hyaluronan gel-PureRegen® Gel Sinus-on wound healing and synechiae prevention in endoscopic frontal sinus surgery. The study consists of two groups of patients who underwent ESS, including frontal sinus surgery. In the study group of 37 patients, PureRegen® Gel Sinus was applied to both the fr

Effect of postoperative atrial fibrillation on length of stay after cardiac surgery (The Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation in Cardiac Surgery study [PACS(2)].

Atrial fibrillation (AF) after cardiac surgery is thought to increase length of stay (LOS). A clinical pathway focused on the management of postoperative AF, including prophylaxis with beta blockers, was implemented to assess the effect of AF on LOS after cardiac surgery. Data were obtained on consecutive cardiac surgery patients in preoperative normal sinus rhythm, no prior history of AF, and no chronic antiarrhythmic therapy from January to May 1995 (control) and November 1996 to June 1997 (pathway). Statistical analysis was performed to assess the effect of postoperative AF on the LOS, clin

[Evaluation of healing time of osteochemonecrosis of the jaw after surgery: Single-center retrospective study and review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Osteochemonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a chronic ischemic bone exposure. It has an increasing incidence. ONJ is mainly related to bisphosphonate and denosumab therapies in oncologic settings. Healing is considered uncertain ad as occurring slowly. International recommendations suggest to treat ONJ symptomatically in a first attempt. A surgical procedure, potentially aggressive, should be carefully weight up in patients in poor condition and whose life expectancy is often limited. However, surgical treatment seems to allow for a high rate of clinical remission. Postoperative remis
