Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation induces oscillatory power changes in chronic tinnitus.

Chronic tinnitus is associated with neuroplastic changes in auditory and non-auditory cortical areas. About 10 years ago, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of auditory and prefrontal cortex was introduced as potential treatment for tinnitus. The resulting changes in tinnitus loudness are interpreted in the context of rTMS induced activity changes (neuroplasticity). Here, we investigate the effect of single rTMS sessions on oscillatory power to probe the capacity of rTMS to interfere with tinnitus-specific cortical plasticity. We measured 20 patients with bilateral chronic tin

Reward processing in healthy offspring of parents with bipolar disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Bipolar disorder (BD) is highly familial and characterized by deficits in reward processing. It is not known, however, whether these deficits precede illness onset or are a consequence of the disorder. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether anomalous neural processing of reward characterizes children at familial risk for BD in the absence of a personal history of a psychopathologic disorder. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study compared neural activity and behaviors of children at high and low risk for mania while they anticipate and respond to reward and loss. The study was pe

Unveiling metabolic patterns in dementia: Insights from high-resolution quantitative blood-oxygenation-level-dependent MRI.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) and deoxyhemoglobin (DoHb) levels reflect variations in cerebral oxygen metabolism in demented patients. PURPOSE: Delineating the metabolic profiles evident throughout different phases of dementia necessitates an integrated analysis of OEF and DoHb levels. This is enabled by leveraging high-resolution quantitative blood oxygenation level dependent (qBOLD) analysis of magnitude images obtained from a multi-echo gradient-echo MRI (mGRE) scan performed on a 3.0 Tesla scanner. METHODS: Achieving superior spatial resolution in qBOLD necessitates the ut

Parietal and prefrontal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for mild cognitive impairment (MCI): A pilot randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Even though studies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) have demonstrated improvements in cognitive function, we know little about what site of stimulation would be ideal for improving memory. METHODS: We investigated two sites: (1) the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC); and (2) the lateral parietal cortex (LPC), a more novel site. Forty amnestic MCI participants were randomized to one of three rTMS groups: (1) active DLPFC; (2) active LPC; and (3) sham. After completing 20 sessions of MRI-neuronavigated, bilateral rTMS, the participants were followed for 6

Assessment of Hippocampal, Prefrontal Cortical, and Striatal Dopaminergic Circuitry Underlying Altered Social Behavior in Diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a systemic metabolic disorder increasingly implicated in central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, yet the molecular substrates underlying diabetes-induced dopaminergic (DAergic) dysregulation remain poorly defined. This study evaluated region-specific alterations in DAergic neurotransmission within the hippocampus, striatum, and prefrontal cortex, and their association with social behavioral deficits in diabetic mice. According to the weight and age of the animal, two groups were designated as the control group and the diabetes group. The control group was d

Neuroimaging in lesioning therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder: region-based and network analysis of preoperative outcome predictors and postoperative effects.

INTRODUCTION: Lesioning procedures such as capsulotomy and cingulotomy offer therapeutic options for patients with severe, treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, treatment response remains variable, and mechanisms underlying clinical improvement are poorly understood. Neuroimaging may help identify response predictors and elucidate mechanisms of action. METHODS: We systematically reviewed neuroimaging findings from studies of lesioning therapy for OCD, focusing on preoperative predictors of response and postoperative imaging changes. To synthesize findings, we perfo

Resting State Functional Connectivity Among Cortical and Subcortical Grey Matter Structures Can Distinguish Fallers in Parkinson's Disease.

The underlying neural mechanisms associated with falls in Parkinson's disease (PD) are not fully understood. We aimed to identify measures of resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) among cortical and subcortical regions that best discriminate fallers from nonfallers in people with PD. People with mild-to-moderate PD were classified as fallers (n = 23) or nonfallers (n = 35) based on falls in the previous 12 months. Following resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, measures of rs-FC were obtained for multiple subcortical and cortical regions of interest (ROIs) associated wit

Cerebral differences between roller and speed skaters: preliminary evidence for roller-to-ice talent transfer.

OBJECTIVES: Talent transfer (TT) from roller skating to speed skating is a recognized pathway for developing elite athletes. This study aimed to identify the sport-specific cerebral characteristics in these athletes by comparing their brain structure and function, thereby providing preliminary neuroimaging evidence relevant to "roller-to-ice" TT. METHODS: We acquired structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 10 national-level speed skaters and 14 roller skaters. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to assess whole-brain gray matter volume (GMV), and

Medial parietal alpha-frequency transcranial alternating current stimulation for chronic insomnia: a randomized sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic insomnia are characterized by alterations in default mode network and alpha oscillations, for which the medial parietal cortex (MPC) is a key node and thus a potential target for interventions. METHODS: Fifty-six adults with chronic insomnia were randomly assigned to 2 mA, alpha-frequency (10 Hz), 30 min active or sham transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) applied over the MPC for 10 sessions completed within two weeks, followed by 4- and 6-week visits. The connectivity of the dorsal and ventral posterior cingulate cortex (vPCC) was calculated b

Reviewing Psychological Practices to Enhance the Psychological Resilience Process for Individuals with Chronic Pain: Clinical Implications and Neurocognitive Findings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Psychological practices have emerged as promising treatments for coping with chronic pain (CP) as a psychological resilience (PR) enhancer mechanism. These practices contain cognitive, behavioral and emotional modulation of pain. In this regard, classical cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and current trends in CBT, including acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness-based practices may demonstrate significant improvements in pain perception, physical functioning, catastrophic beliefs and fear-avoidance behaviors among patients with CP. However, understanding the neu

Downregulation of Small-Conductance Potassium Channels in Cortical Pyramidal Neurons of the Supplementary Motor Cortex Underlies High Cocaine-Seeking Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Drug relapse remains the primary challenge in treating addiction. Despite substantial research into the neural mechanisms of relapse, particularly in the medial prefrontal cortex associated with drug craving, effective treatments are still elusive. We recently reported that the excitability of cortical pyramidal neurons (CPNs) in the supplementary motor cortex (M2), but not in the primary cortex (M1), is crucial in regulating relapse risk, although the mechanisms are unclear. METHODS: We used a model of cocaine seeking in male rats, tested 45 days after withdrawal (WD45) from five

Different stimulation targets of rTMS modulate specific triple-network and hippocampal-cortex functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is widely applied to treat Alzheimer's disease (AD). Various treatment targets are currently being explored in clinical research. However, target diversity can result in considerable heterogeneity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether different rTMS targets can enhance cognitive domains by modulating functional connectivity (FC) of the hippocampus (HIP) and triple network, which comprises the salience network (SN), central executive network (CEN), and default mode network (DMN). METHODS: We enrolled 63 patients wit

Animal Model of Autism Induced by Valproic Acid Combined with Maternal Deprivation: Sex-Specific Effects on Inflammation and Oxidative Stress.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) etiology probably involves a complex interplay of both genetic and environmental risk factors, which includes pre- and perinatal exposure to environmental stressors. Thus, this study evaluated the effects of prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) combined with maternal deprivation (MD) on behavior, oxidative stress parameters, and inflammatory state at a central and systemic level in male and female rats. Pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to VPA during gestation, and the offspring were submitted to MD. Offspring were tested for locomotor and social behavior; ra

Characteristics of corticomuscular coupling during wheelchair Tai Chi in patients with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Wheelchair Tai Chi (WCTC) has been proved to have benefits for the brain and motor system of spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, the characteristics of corticomuscular coupling during WCTC are scarcely known. We aimed to investigate changes following SCI on corticomuscular coupling, and further compare the coupling characteristics of WCTC with aerobic exercise in SCI patients. METHODS: A total of 15 SCI patients and 25 healthy controls were recruited. The patients had to perform aerobic exercise and WCTC, while healthy controls needed to complete a set of WCTC. Mapping Brain Structure Variability in Chronic Pain: The Role of Widespreadness and Pain Type and Its Mediating Relationship With Suicide Attempt.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain affects nearly 20% of the U.S. POPULATION: It is a leading cause of disability globally and is associated with a heightened risk for suicide. The role of the central nervous system in the perception and maintenance of chronic pain has recently been accepted, but specific brain circuitries involved have yet to be mapped across pain types in a large-scale study. METHODS: We used data from the UK Biobank (N = 21,968) to investigate brain structural alterations in individuals reporting chronic pain compared with pain-free control participants and their mediating effect o

Brain volumetric correlates of electroconvulsive therapy versus transcranial magnetic stimulation for treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) are effective neuromodulation therapies for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). While ECT is generally considered the most effective antidepressant, rTMS is less invasive, better tolerated and leads to more durable therapeutic benefits. Both interventions are established device antidepressants, but it remains unknown if they share a common mechanism of action. Here we aimed to compare the brain volumetric changes in patients with TRD after right unilateral (RUL) ECT versus left dorsolateral pr

Associations of VGF with Neuropathologies and Cognitive Health in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: VGF is proposed as a potential therapeutic target for Alzheimer's (AD) and other neurodegenerative conditions. The cell-type specific and, separately, peptide specific associations of VGF with pathologic and cognitive outcomes remain largely unknown. We leveraged gene expression and protein data from the human neocortex and investigated the VGF associations with common neuropathologies and late-life cognitive decline. METHODS: Community-dwelling older adults were followed every year, died, and underwent brain autopsy. Cognitive decline was captured via annual cognitive testing. Com
