The Robot Of Theseus: a modular robotic testbed for legged locomotion.

Robotic models of biological systems are useful for independently varying specific features to determine their contribution to whole-system behavior, but most quadrupedal robots differ so greatly from animal morphologies that they have minimal biomechanical relevance. Commercially available quadrupedal robots are also prohibitively expensive for biological research programs and difficult to customize. Here, we present a 3D printable, low-cost quadrupedal robot with modular legs that can match a wide range of animal morphologies for biomechanical hypothesis testing. The Robot Of Theseus (TROT)

Prosthetic rehabilitation of a hemifacial defect using hybrid digital-conventional workflow.

The choice of appropriate treatment aids holds paramount significance in achieving optimum treatment outcomes. Rehabilitation of large craniofacial defects following conventional workflow is challenging and is influenced by the required material properties, operator's expertise and anatomical complexity. A woman in her early 30s was referred for the prosthetic rehabilitation of an extensive facial defect following traumatic avulsion from a fodder-cutting machine. The defect involved the frontal bone, orbit, cheek and upper lip on the right side, including complete nose. Analogue impressions we

Development of a Realistic Physical Phantom for Laparoscopic and Robotic-Assisted Sacrocolpopexy Training and Associated.

OBJECTIVE: Robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy is the gold standard for treating advanced pelvic organ prolapse, but its most critical step, presacral dissection, carries a significant risk of vascular and ureteral injury. Traditional training relies heavily on intraoperative exposure, yet no simulator currently provides an anatomically realistic, reusable, and cost-effective platform for practicing this high-risk procedure. METHOD: To address this gap, we developed a modular phantom designed for training in laparoscopic and robotic sacrocolpopexy procedures. A hierarchical task analysis was cond

3D bioprinting of stromal vascular fraction enriched with MXenes for enhanced intestinal regeneration.

Intestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel diseases and gastrointestinal fistulae are marked by chronic inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and impaired repair, conditions insufficiently addressed by current treatments. Regenerative strategies able to restore epithelial integrity and support stromal and vascular remodeling are therefore highly needed. The stromal vascular fraction (SVF), a heterogeneous and autologous cell population from adipose tissue, offers angiogenic, immunomodulatory, and regenerative properties, while three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting enables its embedding in hydro

Development of a simulation-based laparoscopic ventral rectopexy module: skills training for minimally invasive pelvic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic pelvic surgery presents significant technical challenges due to anatomical constraints such as limited working space and proximity to neurovascular structures. Laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVMR) was selected as the procedural framework for model design and validation, given its complexity and relevance as a representative pelvic procedure. This study aimed to develop and validate a synthetic and reproducible simulation model with structural and functional fidelity to support the acquisition of laparoscopic skills in anatomically restricted pelvic environments.

Advanced manufacturing of coil-reinforced multilayer vascular grafts to optimize biomechanical performance.

Small diameter vascular grafts require a complex balance of biomechanical properties to achieve target burst pressure, arterial compliance-matching, and kink resistance to prevent failure. Iterative design of our multilayer vascular grafts was previously used to achieve high compliance while retaining the requisite burst pressure and suture retention strength for clinical use. To impart kink resistance, a custom 3D solution printer was used to add a polymeric coil to the electrospun polyurethane graft to support the graft during bending. The addition of this reinforcing coil increased kink res

Influence of polishing methods on the physical properties of temporary restorations.

Although surface polishing of temporary restorations is a crucial clinical step, there is a lack of information about the effect of different polishing protocols on the surface properties of 3D printed resins for temporary restorations. This study had as goal to evaluate the effect of different polishing methods on the surface roughness, contact angle, and color stability of temporary restorations. One bis-acrylic resin (Integrity/IT) and 3 resins for 3D printing (Denture teeth, Formlabs/DT, Crown and Bridge MFH, Nextdent/CB, and Cosmos Temp, Yller/CT) were polished following 5 protocols (No p

Experimental and Computational Analysis of Bolus Fragmentation during Model Oropharyngeal Swallowing.

Fragmentation of the liquid bolus during swallowing may enhance the risk of airway exposure to the passing bolus and thereby increase vulnerability for aspiration. Our goal was to develop an experimental and a computational model that depicts how physical forces applied to a model bolus affect cohesion during simulated swallowing. A physical replica of the oral cavity was created through 3D printing to emulate the bolus-accommodating tongue within the oral cavity. The intent was to assess the effect of linear force applied to the bolus, similar to that of the deforming tongue during bolus prop

The Role of 3D technology in corrective osteotomy for forearm malunion.

Forearm malunion affects upper limb function, impairing rotation, grip strength, and dexterity. Traditional osteotomies, based on two-dimensional imaging and intraoperative adjustments, may fail to address the intricate three-dimensional aspects of forearm deformities. Advances in 3D technology, including imaging, virtual surgical planning and 3D-printed patient-specific guides, have transformed corrective osteotomy by enhancing precision and predictability. This paper discusses the limitations of traditional methods, the role of 3D imaging in detailed deformity analysis, the benefits of virtu

3D Bioprinting Inner Ear Organ of Corti Organoids Induce Hair Cell Regeneration.

Hearing loss is often regarded as "invisible disability" which seriously affects the quality of life. The majority of hearing loss cases are caused by the damage to inner ear hair cells or connected spiral ganglion cells, and there is a lack of effective treatment measures. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the use of two-dimensional (2D) culture systems to induce the regeneration of auditory cells. However, the regenerated hair cells cannot form effective functional ciliary bundles under the 2D system, let alone establish synaptic contact with spiral ganglion cells, so th

Construction of a 3D bioprinted skin model for psoriasis research and drug evaluation.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease involving complex genetic, immune, and environmental interactions. Currentin vitromodels fail to fully replicate the human psoriatic microenvironment, while animal models are limited by species differences and ethical concerns, restricting their applicability in pathogenesis studies and drug screening. Here, we present a human-derivedin vitropsoriasis model constructed via 3D bioprinting. By optimizing the bioink composition, we fabricated a full-thickness skin model with a vascularized dermal layer and a dense stratified epidermis. Cell viabili

Mobilization of impacted teeth in the digital age: a technical note.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth mobilization is a challenging orthodontic treatment. Inadequate interdisciplinary communication between surgery and orthodontics, as well as limited knowledge of the topography of the surgical field, can lead to unfavorable positioning of the appliance. This can result in dangerous force vectors for tooth movement. Comprehensive digital planning and customized tools could reduce these sources of error. Two cases of impacted canines were treated using cutting guides and customized attachments. METHOD AND MATERIALS: A CBCT and intraoral scan were taken for planning. A CAD proc

A rapid and low-cost method to fabricate well of the well (WOW) dishes with arbitrary 3D microwell shapes for improved embryo culture.

Despite its high cost, the success rate for in vitro fertilization (IVF) remains < 33% in humans, driving the need for new techniques to improve embryo culture outcomes. The well-of-the-well (WOW) culture system is a platform for in-vitro mammalian embryo culture that has been shown to enhance the developmental competence of embryos and clinical pregnancy rates in humans. However, discovery and testing of the best design for optimal embryo culture quality is hindered by the lack of a method to flexibly produce WOW dishes of various designs. Here, we present a low-cost and simple method to fabr

Hybrid 3D bioprinting for advanced tissue-engineered trachea: merging fused deposition modeling (FDM) and top-down digital light processing (DLP).

In this present study, we introduce an innovative hybrid 3D bioprinting methodology that integrates fused deposition modeling (FDM) with top-down digital light processing (DLP) for the fabrication of an artificial trachea. Initially, polycaprolactone (PCL) was incorporated using an FDM 3D printer to provide essential mechanical support, replicating the structure of tracheal cartilage. Subsequently, a chondrocyte-laden glycidyl methacrylated silk fibroin hydrogel was introduced via top-down DLP into the PCL scaffold (PCL-Sil scaffold). The mechanical evaluation of PCL-Sil scaffolds showed that
