Gut Microbiota and Its Metabolite Taurine-β-Muricholic Acid Contribute to Antimony- and/or Copper-Induced Liver Inflammation.

Antimony and copper can contaminate vegetables and enter the human body through the digestive tract, inducing severe and extensive biotoxicity. However, the role of bile acids (BAs) in the pathogenesis of liver inflammation by antimony or copper has not been elucidated. Our results indicated that antimony and/or copper induced liver inflammation, causing the disruption of gut microbiota, with the down-regulation of probiotics and up-regulation of harmful bacteria closely correlated to liver inflammation. Targeted metabolomics of BAs showed that antimony and/or copper significantly up-regulated

Nrf2 as a Molecular Guardian of Redox Balance and Barrier Integrity in IBD.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, represents a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by immune dysregulation, oxidative stress, and impaired epithelial barrier function. Among the complex molecular networks involved, the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has emerged as a central regulator of redox balance, anti-inflammatory signaling, and mucosal homeostasis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the pathogenic role of oxidative stress in IBD, detailing the

Implications of gut microbiota in hepatic and pancreatic diseases: Gut-liver-pancreas axis.

The gut-liver-pancreas axis (GLPA) is a critical network shaped by gut microbiota (GM) and their metabolites, essential for maintaining metabolic and immune balance. Disruption of this microbial equilibrium, known as dysbiosis, contributes to the development and progression of various hepatic and pancreatic diseases. Through mechanisms such as increased intestinal permeability and exposure to microbial products-including lipopolysaccharide, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and secondary bile acids-dysbiosis promotes inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and carcinogenesis. These changes a

The gut-brain axis in Alzheimer's disease: how gut microbiota modulate microglial function.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder that can be caused by multiple factors, such as abnormal amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition, pathological changes in Tau protein, lipid metabolism disorders, and oxidative stress. Recent studies have revealed the potential link between gut microbiota and AD, particularly the impact of gut microbiota and its derivatives on microglia. As immune cells in the central nervous system (CNS), microglia are involved in neuroinflammation and the regulation of cognitive function. Research indicates that the dysregulation of gut microbiota may aff

The gut microbiome as a major source of drug-resistant infections: emerging strategies to decolonize and target the gut reservoir.

Infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria represent a significant global health crisis that continues to worsen, creating an urgent need for alternative treatment and prevention strategies. A major source of drug-resistant bacteria is the human gut. The gut microbiota consists of bacteria that are frequently exposed to antibiotics, leading to selective pressure that promotes the development of resistant strains such as carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). These drug-resistant bacteria can spread from the gut to other body sites, le

Impact of Periodontal Host-Modulation Therapies on Oral-Gut Microbiome Axis in Periodontitis Patients with Hematological Diseases: A Narrative Review.

Host-modulating therapies and oral microbiome-targeted approaches are emerging options in periodontal care and are especially relevant for patients undergoing immunotherapy for hematologic malignancies. Immune dysregulation induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors or CAR-T cell therapy may worsen periodontal inflammation and alter the composition and functions of the oral microbiota. Beyond these, other immunomodulatory treatments commonly employed in hematologic malignancies-including monoclonal antibodies (e.g., rituximab, daratumumab), immunomodulatory drugs (e.g., lenalidomide, thalidomide)

Gut-microbiota-derived indole sulfate promotes heart failure in chronic kidney disease.

Heart failure (HF) is highly prevalent in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associates with alterations in gut microbiota, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, complicating diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we identify indoxyl sulfate (IS), produced by E. coli through the tryptophanase (TnaA) pathway, as a key metabolite involved in CKD-related HF. Mechanistically, IS disrupts cardiac mitochondrial function and induces myocardial apoptosis via the AHR-CYP1B1 axis, driving HF progression. To target this gut-microbiota-IS axis for clinical improvement of CKD-related HF, we app

Double-Layer Magnetic Microspheres with Dual Drug Delivery of Antibacterial and Maintenance Agents for the Treatment of Candida albicans Vaginitis.

Candida vaginitis (CV) is the most common fungal infection among gynecological diseases, caused by Candida albicans (C. albicans). Traditional treatment for CV has led to increased antibiotic resistance, complicating treatment and indiscriminately killing both pathogens and beneficial bacteria in the vagina. Additionally, the inconvenience of traditional vaginal administration and the short residence time of treatments pose significant challenges. We developed a safe and effective combination drug delivery platform featuring magnetic bilayer gel microspheres to combine antibacterial properties

Recent Advances in the Etiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Marmoset Wasting Syndrome.

One of the primary challenges encountered in managing captive callitrichids is a group of gastrointestinal disorders that are collectively known as Marmoset Wasting Syndrome (MWS). Unfortunately, MWS is still not well understood. It is suggested that MWS has a multifactorial etiology; stress, infection, malnutrition, malabsorption, and enteritis or colitis may be associated with MWS. Usually, animals demonstrate more than one of the following clinical signs: progressive weight loss, alopecia, chronic diarrhea, muscle atrophy, hypoproteinemia, and anemia. Recent advances in diagnostics, mostly

The Anti-Lupus Plate: Mapping Nutritional Interventions to Inflammatory Pathways in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

A complicated autoimmune illness known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is typified by multi-organ dysfunction and ongoing inflammatory processes. Although medication is still the mainstay of managing SLE, tailored nutrition provides a mechanistically sound way to reduce inflammation and promote immunological balance. The present article links certain nutritional factors to pathways controlling cytokine equilibrium, oxidative damage, endothelium integrity, and regulatory T cell activity. These elements include unsaturated fats, vitamins, polyphenols, probiotics, and fiber-derived short-ch

Chronic inflammation in Long COVID relationship to autoimmune diseases.

The new coronavirus pandemic has been ongoing for nearly five years. In addition to the severe symptoms in the acute phase, it is accompanied by long-term complications and sequelae involving the respiratory, neurological, immune, circulatory, and gastrointestinal systems for several months or even years, which is called the Long COVID. Many studies have suggested that systemic chronic inflammation caused by residual viral components may be one of the pathophysiologic mechanisms of Long COVID. In this paper, we will review the autoimmune diseases caused by chronic inflammation. In particular,

Extracellular vesicles from L. paracasei improve neuroinflammation, GABA neurotransmission and motor incoordination in hyperammonemic rats.

Patients with liver cirrhosis may show minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) with motor incoordination and cognitive impairment that reduce life quality and span. Motor incoordination is due to neuroinflammation and enhanced GABAergic neurotransmission in cerebellum. Recent reports support that probiotics, including L. casei, may improve cognitive function in different pathologies and MHE in cirrhotic patients. Extracellular vesicles (EV) are small cell-derived membrane vesicles that carry bioactive molecules released from cells, including bacteria. We hypothesized that EV from Lacticaseibacill
