BACKGROUND: Alcoholism (ALC) is highly prevalent in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection (HIV), and those with comorbidity (ALC+HIV) may suffer compounded deficits in cognitive and motor functions affected by both conditions. Given that each disease can adversely affect motor, visuospatial, and executive functions, we used an expanded version of the Digit Symbol (DS) test to assess the separate and combined effects of ALC and HIV infection on these cognitive and motor components.
METHODS: Participants were 44 ALC, 43 HIV, 55 ALC+HIV, and 49 normal controls (NC). We modif

BACKGROUND: Several studies suggest an association between hypovitaminosis D and mood disorders including major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. On the other hand, there is not enough study about acute manic episode and hypovitaminosis D. This data insufficient zone led us to study on whether vitamin D deficiency is associated with acute manic episode and has an impact on disease activity Methods: Thirty-one patients with bipolar disorder in remission, 26 patients with acute manic episode and 40 healthy controls with no major psychopathology

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis use is very frequent in bipolar disorder and has been found to increase the duration and frequency of manic symptoms while decreasing those of depression. Bipolar patients who use cannabis were shown to have poorer compliance to treatment, more symptoms that are psychotic and a worse prognosis than patients who do not. In this study, we have evaluated the importance of cannabis use among bipolar patients admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital of the Cross, Lebanon (Hôpital Psychiatrique de la Croix [HPC]) as well as the clinical differences between cannabis users and non-u

OBJECTIVES: There is mixed evidence as to the merits of continuing versus discontinuing medication with anticonvulsants before starting electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in patients with manic episodes. The aim of the present study was therefore to compare, in a controlled double-blind randomized clinical trial, treatment improvements and treatment outcome in patients with current manic episodes while treated with ECT with and without concurrent sodium valproate therapy.
METHODS: A total of 42 inpatients (mean [SD] age, 32.1 [9.6]; 88% men) with bipolar disorders and currently during a manic st

Among the youths referred to our Psychiatric Inpatient Emergency Service, we focused on bipolar disorder (BD), to explore predictive elements for the outcome. Fifty-one patients (30 males, 21 females, age range 8-18 years, mean age 14.2 ± 3.1 years) received a diagnosis of BD, according to historical information, prolonged observations, and a structured clinical interview (K-SADS-PL). Twenty-seven patients (52.9%) were responders at the end of hospitalization according to CGI-I 1 or 2 and 50% decrease of both Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS). Responders

Interferon-ß is used in patients with multiple sclerosis to reduce autoimmunity; although other psychiatric side-effects are common, in contrast to interferon-alpha, psychosis has been reported only once. A patient with multiple sclerosis developed auditory hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and increased aggressiveness after 16 months of treatment with interferon-ß-1b, 250 mg every other day. He responded after about one month to antipsychotic treatment, but tended to relapse upon dose reduction, and after 2 years still needs antipsychotics to control his symptoms. Because there was no chang

Patients with adult autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continue to suffer from impairment in socialization and communication skills, and a proportion of them may develop psychiatric symptoms. It is thus likely that physicians in adult psychiatric departments may see a number of patients with ASD. Identification of patients with ASD is helpful and important for rehabilitation. This study estimated the prevalence of ASD among adult psychiatric outpatients in a Taiwanese medical center. A total of 660 patients were screened with Nylander and Gillberg's "Autism Spectrum Disorder in Adult Screening Que

BACKGROUND: Although agitation associated with psychosis is a common presentation in the psychiatric emergency service, there is no consensus concerning the best treatment. Standard treatment often consists of intramuscular (i.m.) injection of high-potency neuroleptics, sometimes combined with benzodiazepines. The objective of this study was to determine the relative efficacy, safety, and tolerability of oral risperidone versus intramuscular haloperidol, both in combination with lorazepam, for the emergency treatment of psychotic agitation in patients who are able to accept oral medications.

The sample of mental patients in sheltered care has a lower arrest rate than the general population in California in all categories of crimes, except for violent crimes. For violent crimes, the sheltered-care population is likely to be arrested at 1.33 times the rate of the state population, even when the heterogeneity of aggravated assault was taken into consideration. This indicates empirically that the mentally ill in sheltered care are more dangerous than the general population. For prediction of criminality, four factors are found to be significant predictors of resident criminality after

Cognitive theories hold that biased attention to threat plays a prominent role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. In support of this view, attention training has been shown to affect emotional reactivity. An important limitation of most attention training studies is that they almost exclusively rely on self-report measures to assess changes in fear. In the present study, we trained attention towards or away from spiders. We assessed not only self-reported spider fear, but also implicit spider associations, physiological, and behavioural measures of spider fear. Although w

We examined changes over 28 days in mood states, craving for cocaine, and sleep during short-term abstinence reported by 12 male, predominantly intravenous-using, cocaine-addicted subjects residing in a research facility. For comparison, we examined 10 nonaddicted control subjects. There were no significant differences between cocaine addicts and controls regarding demographics and selected DSM-III-R diagnoses other than psychoactive substance use disorder and antisocial personality disorder. There were significantly higher scores of psychiatric symptoms reported by cocaine addicts 1 week befo

The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders introduced a dimensional approach to personality pathology, with maladaptive traits assessed by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form (PID-5-BF). Despite extensive validation, evidence on its diagnostic accuracy and empirically derived cutoff scores remains limited. This study aims to compare PID-5-BF trait levels and profiles across individuals with personality disorders (PDs), clinical participants without PDs, and nonclinical participants and to evaluate its diagnostic accuracy and screening cutoffs. This cross-sectional study i

Psychobiotics have been suggested as an alternative or adjunctive intervention for depressive symptoms. Bifidobacterium longum (B. longum) 1714 has previously been shown to influence stress response and sleep quality. This double-blind, placebo-controlled trial investigated whether B. longum 1714 (1 × 10¹⁰ colony-forming units/day) affects severity of depressive symptoms in 168 adults (aged 18-70) with mild to moderate depression over 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the change in Beck's Depression Inventory-II scores. Secondary outcomes included changes in sleep quality and mental wellness, m

Background: Given the high burden of trauma in Sub-Saharan Africa, there is a critical need for scalable tools to screen for trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, especially in low-resource settings. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the utility, reliability, and validity of the Primary Care PTSD Screen for DSM-5 (PC-PTSD-5) administered over the telephone to individuals previously enrolled in the Neuropsychiatric Genetics of African Populations-Psychosis study (NeuroGAP-Psychosis) study in Uganda (N = 4,921) and Kenya (N = 3,149).Method: Cases with psychosis and contr

Structured clinical interviews are the gold standard for identifying borderline personality disorder (BPD) in research. No self-report instrument has been validated as a replacement tool for BPD diagnosis. However, clinical interviews can be time and cost-intensive, limiting their utility as appropriate screening tools. Also, data are lacking regarding the level of training and education interviewers need to use BPD screening instruments effectively. The goal of this project was to clarify best practices for brief screening interviews to identify potential research participants with BPD. We an

OBJECTIVES: The Worry and Anxiety Questionnaire (WAQ) was initially developed to provide a rapid and efficient assessment of all the symptoms and diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Given that few instruments have been validated for evaluating GAD in older adults, the WAQ-being brief and assessing each component of GAD separately-may offer a valuable measure for this population. The present study examines its psychometric properties in older adults.
METHOD: A total of 495 participants aged 60-90 years took part in the study. The sample included 141 individuals diagnose

Psychomotor slowing (PS) is common across mental disorders and has been linked to the clinical course of major depressive disorder (MDD). Prospective evidence as a predictor of treatment outcomes remains limited. We hypothesized that baseline PS severity would be associated with negative treatment outcomes in patients with MDD including the severity of acute suicidality. We analyzed data from a 6-month prospective, multicenter observational study of inpatients with MDD and acute suicidality.
