Mental health in paediatric and adult myositis-related diseases: current state of research, interventions, and future steps from the MIHRA Psychological Impact Scientific Working Group.

Psychological and emotional well-being are critical aspects of overall health for individuals with chronic rheumatologic conditions. Mental health-related literature, however, predominantly focuses on systemic lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis, with limited emphasis on idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). High proportions of those with juvenile myositis report psychological distress at levels warranting mental health referral. Adults with dermatomyositis diagnosed with depression or anxiety do not receive adequate mental health care. Mental health symptoms in those with IIMs ar

Profiles of intolerance of uncertainty, separation anxiety, and negative affectivity in emerging adulthood: A person-centered approach.

BACKGROUND: Although Intolerance of uncertainty (IU), separation anxiety, and negative affectivity seem theoretically interrelated, no empirical study has considered them jointly so far. However, deepening this topic is clinically relevant, especially during the delicate phase of emerging adulthood. This study aimed to pinpoint psychological profiles based on IU, separation anxiety symptoms, and negative affectivity in a group of Italian non-clinical emerging adults. Such profiles were then compared in terms of key psychological and psychosocial characteristics. METHODS: 868 young adults (73

Monitoring cognitive and psychological alterations in COVID-19 patients: A longitudinal neuropsychological study.

BACKGROUND: SARS-COV-2 infection has been associated to long-lasting neuropsychiatric sequelae, including cognitive deficits, that persist after one year. However, longitudinal monitoring has been scarcely performed. Here, in a sample of COVID-19 patients, we monitor cognitive, psychological and quality of life-related profiles up to 22 months from resolution of respiratory disease. METHODS: Out of 657 COVID-19 patients screened at Manzoni Hospital (Lecco, Italy), 22 underwent neuropsychological testing because of subjective cognitive disturbances at 6 months, 16 months, and 22 months. Tests

Psycho-behavioral responses of Nigerian health workers to an initial human-to-human transmission of the coronavirus disease.

Previous pandemics have had significant impact on psychological well-being of front-line health care workers. Issues such as fear of contracting the disease, high workload as a result of high numbers of infected cases, increased job stress and unavailability of personal protective equipment have been implicated in development of psychological distress in this subset of individuals. The aim of the present paper is to describe psychobehavioral responses of health care workers and potential predictors of emotional response at onset of COVID- 19 outbreak in Nigeria. Cross-sectional web-based surve

'There is trauma all round': A qualitative study of health workers' experiences of caring for parents after stillbirth in Kenya and Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth is a traumatic life-event for parents. Compassionate care from health workers supports grief and adjustment, alleviating psychological distress and minimising serious adverse health and social consequences. Bereavement support in facilities in LMICs, including in sub-Saharan Africa, often fails to meet parents' needs. However, very few studies have explored health worker's experiences in these settings. AIM: To explore the lived experiences of midwives, doctors and others, caring for women after stillbirth in Kenya and Uganda. METHODS: Qualitative, guided by Heideggeri

'Stressed, uncomfortable, vulnerable, neglected': a qualitative study of the psychological and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on UK frontline keyworkers.

OBJECTIVES: Non-healthcare keyworkers face distinct occupational vulnerabilities that have received little consideration within broader debates about 'essential' work and psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was therefore to explore the impact of the pandemic on the working lives and mental health and well-being of non-healthcare keyworkers in the UK. DESIGN: In-depth, qualitative interviews, analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis. SETTING: Telephone or video call interviews, conducted in the UK between September 2020 and January 2021. PARTICIPANT

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Outcome after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in Older People.

OBJECTIVE: Older age is often identified as a risk factor for poor outcome from traumatic brain injury (TBI). However, this relates predominantly to mortality following moderate-severe TBI. It remains unclear whether increasing age exerts risk on the expected recovery from mild TBI (mTBI). In this systematic review of mTBI in older age (60+ years), a focus was to identify outcome through several domains - cognition, psychological health, and life participation. METHODS: Fourteen studies were identified for review, using PRISMA guidelines. Narrative synthesis is provided for all outcomes, from

Outpatient CBT for Motor Functional Neurological Disorder and Other Neuropsychiatric Conditions: A Retrospective Case Comparison.

OBJECTIVE: No gold-standard treatment exists for motor functional neurological disorder (mFND), and limited evidence has been found for the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in treating the disorder. This study examined sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, treatment outcomes, and treatment dropout among patients with and without mFND who received CBT in a neuropsychiatric outpatient clinic in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Data from a large anonymized psychiatric register were used to identify patients who received outpatient CBT in a neuropsychiatry clinic between 2

Group Therapy for Patients with Adjustment Disorder in Primary Care.

A high percentage of patients have a diagnosis of adjustment disorder (AD) when they arrive at primary care (PC) appointments. However, most of them do not receive adequate psychological treatment. The present study's aim is to determine the efficacy of a group psychological treatment program in patients with AD. The sample consisted of patients with AD from two PC units in Valencia, from which two groups were randomly generated: A treatment group (n = 31) and a waiting-list group (n = 20), homogeneous in terms of socio-demographic and psychometric variables prior to treatment. Treatment consi

Reporting of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Cardiac Misconceptions Following Cardiac Rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Approximately 15% of cardiac patients experience posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), double the incidence seen in the general community. Posttraumatic stress disorder can seriously affect psychological and physical recovery. This study assessed how many patients reported symptoms of PTSD following a cardiac event and examined whether there was any change after completing a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program. Associations between PTSD and anxiety, depression, and cardiac misconceptions were also explored. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study using repeated measures. All pat

Modulation of clinical expression of plaque-induced gingivitis: effects of personality traits, social support and stress.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown an association between an acute stressful event and gingivitis. However, the possible effects of personality traits associated with stress resistance/susceptibility and current level of stress on the clinical expression of plaque-induced inflammation remain to be examined. The aim of this study was to characterize the subject-based clinical behaviour of the gingiva during experimental gingivitis in relation to personality profile, psychological stress and coping behaviour. METHODS: Ninety-six systemically and periodontally healthy subjects (mean age: 23.6+/-1.7

Top Ten Tips All Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Anorexia Nervosa and Eating Disorder Care.

Eating disorders (ED), particularly anorexia nervosa (AN), represent high-morbidity, high-mortality psychiatric illnesses with multisystem medical complications, frequent relapse, and substantial caregiver burden. As palliative care (PC) clinicians increasingly encounter patients with severe and enduring ED, they may be asked to help manage complex symptom distress, navigate treatment refusals, support families, and participate in values-based goals of care discussions amid prognostic uncertainty. At the same time, the emerging and contested discourse around "terminal anorexia nervosa" undersc

An occupational perspective of the lived experience of individuals with Alopecia Areata: A scoping review.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic condition that causes unpredictable hair loss, often leading to significant psychological distress. While the social and medical implications of AA have been explored, the occupational impact has not been considered. This scoping review aimed to explore the lived experiences of individuals with AA from an occupational perspective. A five-stage methodological framework was followed, with a search conducted across three databases (2003-2023), identifying key terms related to AA and its effects on both children, adults, and older adults. Eleven qualitative studie

Corrective camouflage in pediatric dermatology.

Many dermatologic diseases, including vitiligo and other pigmentary disorders, vascular malformations, acne, and disfiguring scars from surgery or trauma, can be distressing to pediatric patients and can cause psychological alterations such as depression, loss of self-esteem, deterioration of quality of life, emotional distress, and, in some cases, body dysmorphic disorder. Corrective camouflage can help cover cutaneous unaesthetic disorders using a variety of water-resistant and light to very opaque products that provide effective and natural coverage. These products also can serve as conceal

Non-surgical management of erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is a common and distressing medical condition that is now highly amenable to treatment almost irrespective of the cause. Safe, non-surgical treatments with unequivocal efficacy are psychological therapy, intracorporeal injection of vasoactive drugs, transurethral vasodilators and oral sildenafil, all of which have been reported to have a 50-70% overall response rate. Vacuum constriction devices are acceptable for some, usually older patients and oral yohimbine is thought to have marginal efficacy. Local creams to induce or enhance erectile function are currently being inve

Feasibility of a Cognitive-Behavioral Couple Therapy Intervention for Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder.

Female sexual interest/arousal disorder (SIAD) is strongly influenced by interpersonal factors; however, there are no empirically-supported, couple-based sex therapy interventions for this disorder. This pre-registered study tested the feasibility of a cognitive-behavioral couple therapy (CBCT) intervention for SIAD. A sample of 19 couples in which a female partner was diagnosed with SIAD completed a 16-session CBCT intervention delivered online by therapists with PhD-level training in clinical psychology. Women with SIAD (Mage = 43.47, SD = 12.76) and their partners (Mage = 43.74, SD = 11.68)
