Perceived depriving parental rearing and depression.

Four groups of depressed patients 47 unipolars, 21 bipolars, 34 with neurotic-reactive depression, and 39 with unspecified depressive disorder completed, after recovery, the EMBU, a Swedish instrument aimed at assessing the experience of parental rearing practices. The results for three factors: "rejection", "emotional warmth" and "over-protection" and the global judgement scores of "severity" and "consistency" in rearing attitudes were compared with those obtained from 205 healthy individuals. Depressed patients, particularly in the unipolar unspecified groups rated both parents lower than th

A theory of adolescent substance abuse.

This report applies a theory of psychological individuation to inferences drawn from an 8-year series of clinical studies of men who practice heavy, chronic use of different drugs. Each man was studied intensively over a period of 4-5 months, using interviews and a comprehensive battery of dimensional and morphogenic assessment procedures. Users of barbiturates and sedative hypnotics were found to be least mature, followed by users of opiates, users of amphetamine, users of cocaine, and nonusers of drugs, who were found to be most mature. A theory is described which conceives adolescent substa

Outcome of anorexia nervosa in males.

Twenty-seven consecutive male patients suffering from anorexia nervosa were followed-up 2-20 years after presentation; 20 had been treated with an in-patient refeeding/psychotherapy regime. The outcome of the series compared very closely with a similar group of female anorectics: 12 (44%) had a good outcome, stable weight restoration and normal sexual functioning; seven (26%) had an intermediate outcome, and eight (30%) poor (weight more than 15% below normal, and poor or no sexual activity). No patient had died. Good outcome in terms of weight was associated with good psychological and social

Examination of alcoholics by computed tomographic (CT) scans: a critical review.

Neuroradiological studies have consistently demonstrated that alcoholics have morphological abnormalities of cortical, ventricular, and cerebellar structures suggesting brain atrophy. This atrophy is weakly correlated with impaired psychological test performance. Because brain atrophy and intellectual impairment can also be found in normal aging it is necessary to compare alcoholics with age-matched control subjects. It is currently unknown if alcohol-associated brain atrophy and intellectual impairment are the result of conditions preceding alcohol consumption or conditions only indirectly re

Lumbar epidural analgesia in labour: relation to fetal malposition and instrumental delivery.

The incidence of instrumental delivery and malposition immediately before delivery was compared in patients who were given lumbar epidural analgesia and those who were not. Instrumental delivery was five times more common and a malposition of the fetal head was more than three times as common in the epidural group as in women who did not receive regional analgesia. Similar incidences were found even when the epidural was electively chosen before labour in the absence of medical indications. The instrumental delivery rate was affected by parity, the length of the second stage of labour, and the

Relations between electric response audiometry, conventional audiometry and psychodiagnostic examinations in hearing-impaired children.

To obtain a more objective determination of the hearing loss and thereby a more effective therapy, we compared the results of conventional audiometry (reflex and behavioural audiometry) with electric response audiometry (ERA) results in 522 children whose median age was 3 years. ERA threshold was more sensitive at 10.8 +/- 17.5 dB. The mean difference and its standard deviation are both much greater for the younger children and particularly for non-cooperative children, but neither relates clearly to intelligence. In the case of 'difficult-to-test' children (due to behavioural disturbance, men

Efficacy of progressive muscle relaxation training in post-traumatic stress disorder after the Kahramanmaraş earthquake: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake was one of Turkey's most devastating natural disasters, causing serious psychological issues, especially Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Although various treatments exist for PTSD, they can be costly and sometimes ineffective. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Training (PMRT) is a low‑cost, self‑administered technique with no side effects, but randomized controlled trials on its effectiveness for post‑earthquake PTSD remain very limited. This randomized trial examined whether PMRT effectively treats PTSD in individuals after the Kahr

BACKGROUND: Burnout and mental distress among nurses are global public health epidemics that adversely affect nurse well-being and healthcare quality. Evidence-based, scalable mental health interventions are urgently needed. AIMS: To evaluate the 3- and 6-month outcomes of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing a psychologically safe, digital mental health screening and referral program alone versus the same screening and referral program combined with the video-based online MINDBODYSTRONG (MBS) cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based skills-building program among nurses at risk for m

Comparing Movement Patterns and Physical Function Between Chronic Low Back Pain Patients With Nociplastic and Nociceptive Pain Categories.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with chronic low back pain (LBP) often present with significant physical dysfunction. The underlying cause is difficult to diagnose due to the heterogeneous nature of LBP categories. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-six patients were assessed as having either nociceptive (NC) or nociplastic (NP) chronic low back pain using validated surveys, including the PainDETECT Questionnaire and a chronic overlapping pain condition screener. Additional covariates of anxiety, depression, and fear avoidance were evaluated using standard surveys. Physical function was judged objectivel

Neuromuscular exercise combined with pain neuroscience education for knee osteoarthritis management in older women: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis is a prevalent chronic condition in older adults, particularly postmenopausal women, affecting physical, psychological, social, and economic aspects of life. Existing neuromuscular exercise programs for knee osteoarthritis are often incomplete, focusing on isolated components such as strength or balance, without simultaneously targeting all key elements, including core stability, balance, and lower-limb strength. Additionally, these programs rarely address psychosocial factors or integrate pain neuroscience principles. Evidence suggests that combining a comprehe

Effectiveness of the Rewind technique in treatment-seeking military veterans presenting with post-traumatic stress disorder in an NHS setting.

INTRODUCTION: Emerging evidence supports the effectiveness of psychological reconsolidation interventions, such as reconsolidation of traumatic memories (RTM), for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in military veteran populations. The Rewind technique is hypothesised to work through memory reconsolidation, much like RTM, and has shown positive results when treating non-military populations with PTSD.To our knowledge, no peer-reviewed studies have focussed on Rewind's effectiveness in military veteran populations. We propose that Rewind may be a useful and effective treatment for U

Effects of laughter on focus and stress in middle-aged adults: a single-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Disorders associated with mental health significantly impact disability-adjusted life year values and represent an ongoing problem in stressed societies. Worsening mental health also affects cognitive function and quality of life. Increasing attention has thus been attracted to preventive measures for mental and brain health in daily life. This has created a growing interest in care using laughter. This study assessed the effects of a short-term, laughter-based intervention on the mental health and cognitive functions of middle-aged adults. METHODS: The study applied a single-blin

Biopsychosocial factors of depression among community-dwelling geriatric population with low perceived social support; a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Although significant and disabling consequences are presented due to geriatric population-related depression, an insufficient comprehension of various biological, psychological, and social factors affecting this issue has been observed. Notably, these factors can contribute to geriatric population-related depression with low social support. This study aimed to identify factors associated with depression among the community-dwelling geriatric population with low social support in Malaysia. METHODS: This study used secondary data from a population-based health survey in Malaysia, na
