The neural substrate of gesture recognition.

Previous studies have linked action recognition with a particular pool of neurons located in the ventral premotor cortex, the posterior parietal cortex and the superior temporal sulcus (the mirror neuron system). However, it is still unclear if transitive and intransitive gestures share the same neural substrates during action-recognition processes. In the present study, we used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the cortical areas active during recognition of pantomimed transitive actions, intransitive gestures, and meaningless control actions. Perception of

Relationship of temporal lobe volumes to neuropsychological test performance in healthy children.

Ecological validity of neuropsychological assessment includes the ability of tests to predict real-world functioning and/or covary with brain structures. Studies have examined the relationship between adaptive skills and test performance, with less focus on the association between regional brain volumes and neurobehavioral function in healthy children. The present study examined the relationship between temporal lobe gray matter volumes and performance on two neuropsychological tests hypothesized to measure temporal lobe functioning (visual perception-VP; peabody picture vocabulary test, third

Cortical responses to Mozart's sonata enhance spatial-reasoning ability.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined the effects of Mozart's music on spatial-reasoning ability by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: The subjects comprised five males and five females (aged 25-35 years). They were administered the seven original core subtests of the Japanese version of the Tanaka B-type intelligence test, which includes a spatial-reasoning subtest. We used three different music conditions: Mozart's sonata (K. 448), Beethoven and a silent control condition. Moreover, we used optical topography to assess the effects of music on brain function with a spatial-reasoning

The time course of amplitude specification in brief interceptive actions.

The interception of fast moving objects typically allows the object to be seen for only a short period of time. This limits the time available to prepare the movement. To deal with short preparation intervals, performers are likely to prepare a motor program in advance. Although motor preparation may begin before the target is seen, accuracy requires that certain program parameters are determined from observations of the target. In the experiments reported here we sought to determine the last moment at which information about the distance to move (amplitude) can be incorporated into a program.

Involuntary cueing effects during smooth pursuit: facilitation and inhibition of return in oculocentric coordinates.

Peripheral cues induce facilitation with short cue-target intervals and inhibition of return (IOR) with long cue-target intervals. Modulations of facilitation and IOR by continuous displacements of the eye or the cued stimuli are poorly understood. Previously, the retinal coordinates of the cued location were changed by saccadic or smooth pursuit eye movements during the cue-target interval. In contrast, we probed the relevant coordinates for facilitation and IOR by orthogonally varying object motion (stationary, moving) and eye movement (fixation, smooth pursuit). In the pursuit conditions, c

Temporal feature of BOLD responses varies with temporal patterns of movement.

Which brain sites represent the final form of motor commands that encode temporal patterns of muscle activities? Here, we show the possible brain sites which have activity equivalent to the motor commands with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We hypothesized that short-temporal patterns of movements or stimuli are reflected in blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) responses and we searched for regions representing the response. Participants performed two temporal patterns of tapping and/or listened to the same patterns of auditory stimuli in a 3T fMRI. The patterns were designe

Imidacloprid induces neurobehavioral deficits and increases expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein in the motor cortex and hippocampus in offspring rats following in utero exposure.

Imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid, is one of the fastest growing insecticides in use worldwide because of its selectivity for insects. The potential for neurotoxicity following in utero exposure to imidacloprid is not known. Timed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats (300-350 g) on d 9 of gestation were treated with a single intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of imidacloprid (337 mg/kg, 0.75 x LD50, in corn oil). Control rats were treated with corn oil. On postnatal day (PND) 30, all male and female offspring were evaluated for (a) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) activity, (b)

Cognitive and motor development during childhood in boys with Klinefelter syndrome.

The goal of this study was to expand the description of the cognitive development phenotype in boys with Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY). We tested neuropsychological measures of memory, attention, visual-spatial abilities, visual-motor skills, and language. We examined the influence of age, handedness, genetic aspects (parental origin of the extra X chromosome, CAG(n) repeat length, and pattern of X inactivation), and previous testosterone treatment on cognition. We studied 50 boys with KS (4.1-17.8 years). There was a significant increase in left-handedness (P = 0.002). Specific language, acad

Stimulus context and motor preparation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

AIM: To investigate (1) whether and how local stimulus context variation may modify behavioural and preparatory motor processes in children, and (2) if these effects differ between healthy children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aged 9-12 years. METHODS: Behavioural parameters and contingent negative variation (CNV) at cortical motor electrodes were recorded during a cued continuous performance task (AX-CPT) in three stimulus context conditions (Go, NoGo, neutral). Stimulus context was varied on the basis of stimulus types preceding the cue letter A. RESULT

[Motor Fitness. Results of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS)].

Motor fitness was investigated in children and adolescents aged 4-17 using specific short tests. These tested the motor abilities: co-ordination, strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and flexibility. Among the 4-10 year olds, the focus of the investigation was on recording coordination, strength and flexibility; in the age group of the 11-17 year olds it was on recording cardiorespiratory fitness. The current investigation describes motor fitness based on the tested abilities according to age, sex and sociodemographic aspects. In all the test tasks, as expected, there are better results from ol

A blindsight conundrum: how to respond when there is no correct response.

Whereas research on blindsight customarily defines the correct responses to all visual stimuli presented to the cortically blind field, we here introduced a small number of unexpected 'no stimulus' trials in a localization task, to discover whether they would elicit the same responses as blind field targets. As no correct responses existed for the blank stimuli, our subjects, three hemianopic and one normal monkey, and one human hemianope who was aware of many blind-field targets, could either respond to these catch trials as to a target or refrain from responding. Visual stimuli were presente

Comparison of cognitive function in deaf children between before and after cochlear implant.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to examine improvements of cognitive abilities after cochlear implantation in deaf children. We also examined the psychosocial factors that predict good outcomes of cochlear implantation. DESIGN: A neuropsychological test battery was administered to 17 deaf children (mean age, 7 yr 2 mo) before receiving the cochlear implant, and they were reassessed with the same test at 6-mo follow-up. Their parents completed questionnaires concerning their medical and educational history, parenting style, and parental emotional problems. RESULTS: Deaf children showed m

The effects of differential training procedures on linked perceptual class formation.

When the stimuli in one perceptual class (A') become related to the stimuli in another perceptual class (B'), the two are functioning as a single linked perceptual class. A common linked perceptual class would be the sounds of a person's voice (class A') and the pictures of that person (class B'). Such classes are ubiquitous in real world settings. We describe the effects of a variety of training procedures on the formation of these classes. The results could account for the development of naturally occurring linked perceptual classes. Two perceptual classes (A' and B') were formed in Experime

Evidence of a posterior cingulate involvement (Brodmann area 31) in dyslexia: a study based on source localization algorithm of event-related potentials.

The study investigates the differences regarding the position of intracranial generators of P50 component of ERPs in 38 dyslexic children aged 11.47+/-2.12 years compared with their 19 healthy siblings aged 12.21+/-2.25. The dipoles were extracted by solving the inverse electromagnetic problem according to the recursively applied and projected multiple signal classification (RAP-MUSIC) algorithm approach. For improved localization of the main dipole the solutions were optimized using genetic algorithms. The statistical analysis revealed differences regarding the position of intracranial genera

Impaired reproduction of second but not millisecond time intervals in Parkinson's disease.

The basal ganglia have been associated with temporal processing in ranges of milliseconds and seconds. However, results from PD patient studies are elusive. Time perception in these patients has been tested with different approaches including repetitive movement tasks (i.e. finger tapping) and cognitive tasks (i.e. time reproduction), and both abnormal and normal performances have been reported for different time intervals. Furthermore, when PD patients were required to learn two target durations in the same session when they were off medication, they overestimated the short duration and under

The "special effect" of case mixing on word identification: neuropsychological and transcranial magnetic stimulation studies dissociating case mixing from contrast reduction.

We present neuropsychological and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) evidence with normal readers, that the effects of case mixing and contrast reduction on word identification are qualitatively different. Lesions and TMS applied to the right parietal lobe selectively disrupted the identification of mixed relative to single-case stimuli. Bilateral lesions and TMS applied to the occipital cortex selectively disrupted the identification of low-contrast words. These data suggest that different visual distortions (case mixing, contrast reduction) exert different effects on reading, modulated

Mental chronometry of target detection: human thalamus leads cortex.

Attentive monitoring of environmental stimuli is most fundamental for rapid target detection. The aim of this study was to assess the timing of thalamic versus cortical processes involved in this cognitive operation. To this end, simultaneous depth and scalp EEG was recorded in eight patients with essential tremor, undergoing thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS), when the DBS electrodes could be accessed via their temporarily externalized leads. The patients performed an oddball task consisting of 300 presentations of one frequent and two rare visual cues, appearing in randomized order. One o

Ventrolateral prefrontal cortex activation and attentional bias in response to angry faces in adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: While adolescent anxiety disorders represent prevalent, debilitating conditions, few studies have explored their brain physiology. Using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a behavioral measure of attention to angry faces, the authors evaluated differences in response between healthy adolescents and adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder. METHOD: In the primary trials of interest, 18 adolescents with generalized anxiety disorder and 15 comparison subjects of equivalent age/gender/IQ viewed angry/neutral face pairs during fMRI acquisition. Partially enhanced thalamocortical functional connectivity in autism.

Based on evidence for thalamic abnormalities in autism, impairments of thalamocortical pathways have been suspected. We examined the functional connectivity between thalamus and cerebral cortex in terms of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal cross-correlation in 8 male participants with high-functioning autism and matched normal controls, using functional MRI during simple visuomotor coordination. Both groups exhibited widespread connectivity, consistent with known extensive thalamocortical connectivity. In a direct group comparison, overall more extensive connectivity was observed in t
