Problem gambling is complex and often comorbid with other mental health problems. Unfortunately, gambling studies on comorbid psychiatric disorders among Chinese communities are extremely limited. The objectives of this study were to (a) determine the prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders among treatment-seeking pathological gamblers; (b) compare the demographic profiles and clinical features of pathological gamblers with and without comorbid psychiatric disorders; (c) explore the associations between pathological gambling and psychiatric disorders and their temporal relationship. There are only a few studies in which both preoperative psychiatric comorbidity in pharmacoresistant focal epilepsy and its outcome after epilepsy surgery have been investigated. In this study, 144 patients evaluated for epilepsy surgery received psychiatric examination, 84 proceeding to intervention were reassessed postoperatively. Preoperatively, 60% met criteria for ICD-10- or epilepsy-specific psychiatric diagnosis. Twenty-seven percent, predominantly female, suffered from dysphoric disorder (DD) associated with temporal epileptogenic foci. Prevalence of DD correlated with complex partial

We report a case emphasizing the association of epilepsy with psychopathology. The patient was first referred for impulsive and inattentive behavior at the age of 4, and was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder. At the age of 7, intermittent daytime episodes characterized with sudden fear and purposeless running, jumping, clapping, and rocking started. Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings did not reveal any abnormality. Two years later, night-time episodes started, which were quite similar to the daytime spells. An overnight EEG showed bilateral frontal spike and wave disch

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between culture and symptoms of comorbid psychopathology in those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
DESIGN: Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs) for each country and each sub-scale of the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Comorbid for Children (ASD-CC). Follow-up independent univariate analyses and post-hoc tests as needed.
METHODS: Separate samples from South Korea, the UK and Israel were compared to a sample from the US in order to examine cultural contributions, using the ASD-CC.
RESULTS: Overall, few differences were found. Significantly, the US

The current study examined sex differences in psychological (i.e., self-reported anxiety, panic symptoms, and avoidance) and physiological (i.e., heart rate and skin conductance level) response to, and recovery from, a laboratory biological challenge. Participants were a community-recruited sample of 128 adults (63.3% women; M(age)=23.2 years, SD=8.9) who underwent a 4-min 10% CO(2)-enriched air biological challenge. As predicted, women reported more severe physical panic symptoms and avoidance (i.e., less willingness to participate in another challenge) and demonstrated increased heart rate a

Bipolar disorder is a debilitating psychopathology with unknown etiology. Accumulating evidence suggests the possible involvement of Na(+),K(+)-ATPase dysfunction in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. Here we show that Myshkin mice carrying an inactivating mutation in the neuron-specific Na(+),K(+)-ATPase α3 subunit display a behavioral profile remarkably similar to bipolar patients in the manic state. Myshkin mice show increased Ca(2+) signaling in cultured cortical neurons and phospho-activation of extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK) and Akt in the hippocampus. The mood-stabili

OBJECTIVE: To examine correlates of childhood maltreatment in women with binge-eating disorder (BED).
METHOD: Semistructured interviews evaluated 137 women with BED for psychiatric disorders and eating psychopathology, and self-reported childhood maltreatment was assessed.
RESULTS: Emotional abuse was reported by 52% of participants, physical abuse by 28%, sexual abuse by 31%, emotional neglect by 66%, and physical neglect by 48%. Maltreatment categories were not associated with most lifetime psychiatric diagnoses, although specific associations were observed for dysthymic disorder, posttrau

The current study investigated anxiety sensitivity, distress tolerance (Simons & Gaher, 2005), and discomfort intolerance (Schmidt, Richey, Cromer, & Buckner, 2007) in relation to panic-relevant responding (i.e., panic attack symptoms and panic-relevant cognitions) to a 10% carbon dioxide enriched air challenge. Participants were 216 adults (52.6% female; M(age)=22.4, SD=9.0). A series of hierarchical multiple regressions was conducted with covariates of negative affectivity and past year panic attack history in step one of the model, and anxiety sensitivity, discomfort intolerance, and distre

We examined the association of callous-unemotional (C/U) traits with length of psychiatric hospitalization among two samples each with 50 participants: a group of 7-11 year-olds (39 males and 11 females) receiving services on a children's unit, and a group of 12-17 year-olds (27 males and 23 females) receiving services on an adolescent unit. Our analyses focused on the additionally predictive value of C/U traits above and beyond the influence of pre-established risk factors for length of stay, including age, gender, ethnicity, overall levels of functioning and psychopathology, and the diagnosi

Researchers postulate that both shame and guilt are emotions important to anxiety disorders. Extant data, however, indicate that guilt-proneness shares non-significant relationships with psychopathology symptoms after controlling for shame-proneness. To further investigate the relevance of shame and guilt to the anxiety disorders domain, the current study examined associations between shame- and guilt-proneness and anxiety disorder symptoms using data from patients (N=124) with primary anxiety disorder diagnoses. Results indicated that only symptoms of social anxiety disorder (SAD) and general

To investigate the safety and tolerability of the atypical antipsychotic quetiapine in anorexia nervosa patients, and to determine the effect of quetiapine treatment on anorexic psychopathology and other key outcome measures including weight and body image, we conducted a naturalistic, open-label, 12-week randomized controlled trial of low-dose (100-400 mg/day) quetiapine treatment versus treatment as usual in 33 anorexia nervosa patients from our Eating Disorder Clinics. To monitor the effects of treatment over the medium term, the participants were then followed up with assessment visits at

Childhood maltreatment (CM) as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is said to result in functional changes to amygdalae and orbitofrontal cortex. Thus, it might be expected to change olfactory function in adults with a CM-history and current PTSD symptomatology as amygdalae and orbitofrontal cortex are of major importance for olfactory information processing. To explore this we investigated olfactory function in 31 women with current psychopathology and a history of CM, 28 without CM, and 27 healthy women. We used the "Sniffin' Sticks" threshold and identification test and analyzed ch

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disruption has been linked to numerous neural regulatory problems and problems with social emotional and behavioral functioning, and researchers have shown that sleep disruption is prominent in children with symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These issues are germane to foster children, who have numerous disparities in areas of self-regulation and psychopathology but for whom there has been very little examination of sleep quality or the associations between poor sleep quality and physiological/behavioral dysregulation.
METHOD: Actigraphy measures were used

This review provides an overview of the involvement of the corpus callosum (CC) in a variety of developmental disorders that are currently defined exclusively by genetics, developmental insult, and/or behavior. I begin with a general review of CC development, connectivity, and function, followed by discussion of the research methods typically utilized to study the callosum. The bulk of the review concentrates on specific developmental disorders, beginning with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC)-the only condition diagnosed exclusively by callosal anatomy. This is followed by a review of se

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have shown reduced pain perception in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and current self-injurious behavior (SIB). The aim of the present study was to test whether pain perception in patients with current SIB is different from that of patients who had stopped SIB, and whether pain perception of the latter group differs from healthy controls (HC).
METHOD: We investigated 24 borderline patients and 24 HC. Thirteen patients showed current SIB (BPD-SIB) and 11 patients did not exhibit SIB anymore (BPD-non-SIB). Pain thresholds were assessed using therm

Dopaminergic medications could increase the occurrence of a set of dysregulated behaviours in Parkinson's disease (PD), including reward-seeking behaviours (pathological gambling, hypersexuality, compulsive shopping, binge eating, reckless driving), punding and compulsive medication use. We report a preliminary evaluation of a questionnaire to assess the presence of these impulsive-compulsive behaviours associated to dopamine replacement therapy in PD. We screened 38 patients and their caregivers, comparing dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) patients and non-DDS patients. The questionnaire

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders. In panic disorder, panic attacks often occur at unpredictable times, making it difficult to study these episodes in the laboratory. In specific phobias, symptoms occur in very circumscribed situations and specific triggers are sometimes difficult to reproduce in the laboratory. Ambulatory assessment, or ecological momentary assessment, can further the understanding of the natural course and scope of symptoms under ecologically valid circumstances. Because bodily symptoms are integral to the diagnosis of anxiety disorders, the obj

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research suggests that individuals with a history of multiple suicide attempts exhibit more severe psychopathology than individuals with only one or no previous suicide attempts. Given the strong link between diagnoses of major depression and suicide risk, our primary goal was to determine which specific depressive characteristics differentiate multiple attempters from patients with one or no previous attempts.
METHODS: Participants were 121 depressed adult psychiatric inpatients. Participants were administered diagnostic interviews to assess the course and chara

Persons with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and related traits appear in many forensic psychiatry settings. Their clinical hallmarks affecting judgment, insight, impulsivity, motivations, and regulation of emotions, as well as their frequently chaotic lives (internal and external), inaccurate perceptions, rationalizations, and comorbid syndromes can have a marked effect on many civil, criminal, and institutional (eg, corrections) issues. Individuals with BPD are overrepresented in civil, criminal, and child custody forensic situations. The character psychopathology of these individuals
