Balancing Innovation and Access: Insights from AIM's Fair Pricing Model and Its Current and Future Applications.

OBJECTIVE: Access to affordable medicines is a cornerstone of equitable healthcare, yet escalating drug prices increasingly strain national healthcare systems. Cost-based pricing can be a useful complement to value-based pricing, provided that relevant variables are considered. METHODS: We applied the International Association of Mutual Benefit Societies (AIM) Fair Pricing Model to ten market-protected medicines authorized by the European Medicines Agency between 2015 and 2018, covering oncology, rare diseases, and chronic conditions. Analyses were conducted across six European countries-Belg

Hypothetical interventional effect of health behaviors for improving depression symptoms among patients diagnosed with cancer: a g-formula based study.

BackgroundDepressive symptoms are frequently reported among patients undergoing treatment for malignancies and among cancer survivors. However, treatment options for depression in this population remain limited due to significant side effects and suboptimal efficacy. These challenges underscore the urgent need for safe, well-tolerated, and effective strategies to alleviate depressive symptoms in individuals affected by cancer. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the hypothetical interventional effects of seven lifestyle factors on alleviating depressive symptoms in individuals currently or previou

Clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements in oncology--an assessment of their methodological quality.

BackgroundConsensus statements and clinical practice guidelines are widely available for enhancing the care of cancer patients. Despite subtle differences in their definition and purpose, these terms are often used interchangeably. We systematically assessed the methodological quality of consensus statements and clinical practice guidelines published in three commonly read, geographically diverse, cancer-specific journals. Methods Consensus statements and clinical practice guidelines published between January 2005 and September 2013 in Current Oncology, European Journal of Cancer and Journal o

Accuracy of self-reported tobacco use status among hematopoietic SCT patients.

Tobacco use is a risk factor for adverse outcomes among hematopoietic SCT (HSCT) patients. Accurate identification of tobacco use offers a vital opportunity to treat this risk factor. The current study compared self-reported tobacco use status with serum cotinine levels among HSCT patients at the time of pre-transplant evaluation. A total of 444 participants completed both assessments; 44 participants (9.9%) were classified as tobacco users with serum cotinine concentrations >2 ng/mL vs 29 with self-reporting. Sensitivity and specificity of self-reporting were 65.9% and 100%, respectively. Pos

Pressure injury risk assessment for palliative care patients in the acute hospital setting: a scoping review.

BackgroundHospitalised palliative care patients are at risk of pressure injury. The development of pressure injuries causes physical and psychological distress for patients. Therefore, the prevention of hospital-acquired pressure injury is a nursing priority. The first step in prevention is conducting a risk assessment, which should be population-specific. In Australia, four palliative care phases guide care planning for appropriate clinical management of palliative care patients. In phases 1-3, the palliative patient cohort is based on acute care, where patients require medical treatment and/

Incidence and predictors of Bone Metastases (BM) and Skeletal-Related Events (SREs) in Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): A Swiss patient cohort.

Objectives: Bone metastases (BM) and skeletal-related events (SREs) are frequent complications in patients with lung cancer. Whereas in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) incidence, prognostic impact, and risk factors are well established, there is only little knowledge in patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). We retrospectively evaluated the incidence of BM, SRE and their treatment in a SCLC patient cohort treated at our hospital. We further assessed the role of Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), a possible predictor of BM development in SCLC patients. Materials and Methods: We retrospective

Therapeutic Potential of Chlorogenic Acid in Chemoresistance and Chemoprotection in Cancer Treatment.

Chemotherapeutic drugs are indispensable in cancer treatment, but their effectiveness is often lessened because of non-selective toxicity to healthy tissues, which triggers inflammatory pathways that are harmful to vital organs. In addition, tumors' resistance to drugs causes failures in treatment. Chlorogenic acid (5-caffeoylquinic acid, CGA), found in plants and vegetables, is promising in anticancer mechanisms. In vitro and animal studies have indicated that CGA can overcome resistance to conventional chemotherapeutics and alleviate chemotherapy-induced toxicity by scavenging free radicals

Navigating isolation- barriers and multidimensional support needs in symptom self-management for HSCT patients within laminar airflow rooms: a descriptive qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a crucial therapy for hematological malignancies and other conditions. However, the intensive therapy and required isolation place significant physical and psychological burdens on patients. Although effective symptom self-management during isolation is pivotal, the current efforts are often challenged, leading to distress and feelings of loss of control. Nevertheless, research specifically addressing the self-management needs and barriers faced by patients with HSCT confined to laminar airflow rooms is limited. This study aimed to

Anakinra: efficacy in the management of fever during neutropenia and mucositis in autologous stem cell transplantation (AFFECT-2)-study protocol for a multicenter randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Since decades, fever and infections have been the most important complications of intensive chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in the treatment of hematologic malignancies. Neutropenia has long been considered to be the most important risk factor for these complications. However, recent studies have shown that not neutropenia, but the development of mucositis is the most important cause of these complications. Currently, limited options for the prevention and treatment of mucositis are available, of which most are only supportive. The pro-inflammatory c

Ten years of marketing approvals of anticancer drugs in Europe: regulatory policy and guidance documents need to find a balance between different pressures.

Despite important progress in understanding the molecular factors underlying the development of cancer and the improvement in response rates with new drugs, long-term survival is still disappointing for most common solid tumours. This might be because very little of the modest gain for patients is the result of the new compounds discovered and marketed recently. An assessment of the regulatory agencies' performance may suggest improvements. The present analysis summarizes and evaluates the type of studies and end points used by the EMEA to approve new anticancer drugs, and discusses the applic
