BACKGROUND: The term "Caucasian" is still used to describe study populations in medical publications, often without explicit definition or transparent operationalization. This can limit reproducibility, comparability, and external validity. As a case example, we use the first German clinical atropine trial for myopia control in children, the Low-dose AtropIne for Myopia Control in Children (AIM) study.
METHODS: Commentary based on an analysis of publicly available documents related to the AIM trial (protocol/published information) and a structured literature and policy/statement review (PubMe

East Asia is navigating a period of unprecedented demographic aging, with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and other dementias (ADODs) and Parkinson's disease (PD) emerging as primary public health challenges. Utilizing Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data, this review evaluates the longitudinal epidemiological trends in Taiwan compared to neighboring East Asian countries. We found that while ADODs remained relatively stable in most regions, Taiwan exhibited a recent increase in mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY). Notably, ADODs DALY trends are primaril

Brain disorders affect more than one in three people globally, representing a leading cause of disability and morbidity. While the etiology of several of these disorders remains elusive, it is increasingly evident that both genetic and environmental factors contribute to their onset and progression. Given the persistent effects of environmental exposures on biological systems, this review highlights the role of heavy metals (particularly lead, mercury, vanadium, and chromium) in altering behaviour and contributing to the development of neurodegenerative and demyelinating diseases, such as Alzh

Diet is a modifiable lifestyle factor with a proven role in cardiovascular disease risk reduction that might also play an important part in cognitive health. Evidence from observational studies has linked certain healthy dietary patterns to cognitive benefits. However, clinical trials of diet interventions have demonstrated either null or, at best, small effects on cognitive outcomes. In this Review, we summarize the currently available evidence from observational epidemiology and clinical trials regarding the potential role of diet in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia. We furth
