Lipid-induced mononuclear cell cytokine secretion in the development of metabolic aberration and androgen excess in polycystic ovary syndrome.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the effect of saturated fat ingestion on mononuclear cell (MNC) TNFα, IL-6 and IL-1β secretion and circulating IL-6 levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Women with PCOS exhibit increases in MNC-derived TNFα, IL-6 and IL-1β secretion and circulating IL-6 following saturated fat ingestion even in the absence of obesity, and these increases are linked to metabolic aberration and androgen excess. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cytokine excess and metabolic aberration is often present in PCOS. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A cross-sectional desig

Exploring the Psychological and Physiological Insights Through Digital Phenotyping by Analyzing the Discrepancies Between Subjective Insomnia Severity and Activity-Based Objective Sleep Measures: Observational Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a prevalent sleep disorder affecting millions worldwide, with significant impacts on daily functioning and quality of life. While traditionally assessed through subjective measures such as the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the advent of wearable technology has enabled continuous, objective sleep monitoring in natural environments. However, the relationship between subjective insomnia severity and objective sleep parameters remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) explore the relationship between subjective insomnia severity, as measured by ISI scores, and ac

A mediation model explaining the impact of fear of COVID-19 and COVID-19- induced changes in multiple life domains on adolescents' subjective well-being in sub-Saharan Africa.

Though the impact of COVID-19 pandemic's effects on individuals' life domains and quality of life has been widely researched, there remains unanswered questions on the mechanisms that explain the impact of fear of COVID-19 on different measurements of adolescents' subjective well-being (SWB) particularly in the sub-Saharan African context. In a mediation model, we employed data collected during the pandemic to examine the mediating mechanisms that links fear of COVID-19 and COVID-19-induced changes in multiple life domains (subjective feelings of unsafety, positive affect and peer relationship

An Efficient Convolutional Neural Network Model for Classifying Positive Affective States from EEG Data Considering Sleep Condition.

BACKGROUND: The recognition of affective states from EEG recordings considering the sleep condition can be an important supporting tool in therapy and in the treatment of psychological or psychiatric disorders. NEW METHOD: Since sleep deprivation changes EEG characteristics, a two-stage framework is developed for affective state classification. First, a classification between "Normal Sleep" (NS) and "Sleep-Deprived" (SD) is conducted using resting-state EEG data. The data are then fed into one of two newly proposed, lightweight Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to recognize four affective

Validation of the German version of the Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia (SSTICS).

Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) are characterized by cognitive deficits that can significantly impact daily functioning and quality of life. The Subjective Scale to Investigate Cognition in Schizophrenia (SSTICS) is a widely used self-report tool for assessing subjective cognitive impairments. This study validates the German version of the SSTICS. Data from N = 308 participants (38% female) with SSD were analyzed to evaluate factor structure, reliability, and convergent/discriminant validity. A second sample of N = 60 inpatients (37% female) with SSD was used to assess sensitivity to ch

A single dose of cannabidiol increases ad libitum energy intake in healthy adults but does not affect postprandial glucose or lipid metabolism.

The endocannabinoid system is a potent regulator of energy intake, but effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on appetite/eating behaviour in humans are not documented. We examined whether acute CBD ingestion affects energy intake, subjective appetite, or postprandial glucose and lipid metabolism in fifteen healthy adults (four females). A double-blind, randomized, crossover design was used. Participants ingested 298 mg CBD or placebo, with postprandial metabolic outcomes (blood-based energy substrates/hormones, and indirect calorimetry) assessed following consumption of a mixed-macronutrient breakfast

The effect of walking speed on spinal loads and trunk muscle forces using subject-specific musculoskeletal modeling: A database for clinical and modeling applications.

BACKGROUND: Gait analysis of patients with spinal disorders at different walking speeds helps clinicians diagnose conditions and investigate treatment/rehabilitation effectiveness. A subject-specific database for trunk muscle forces and lumbar spine loads of healthy individuals during different walking speeds is therefore useful. METHODS: Ten healthy participants walked at three speeds (slow, normal, and fast) while motion and force-plate data were collected. Force in trunk muscles and loads on the lumbar spine discs were estimated using subject-specific musculoskeletal simulations in OpenSim

Associations Between Repetitive Negative Thinking and Objective and Subjective Sleep Health in Cognitively Healthy Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Poor sleep and high levels of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), including future-directed (ie, worry) and past-directed (ie, brooding) negative thoughts, have been associated with markers of dementia risk. The relationship between RNT and sleep health in older adults is unknown. This study aimed to investigate this association and its specificities including multiple dimensions of objective and subjective sleep. METHODS: This study used a cross sectional quantitative design with baseline data from 127 cognitively healthy older adults (mean age 69.4 ± 3.8 years; 63% female) who to

The effect of COVID-19 lockdowns on sleep time perception: Comparing actigraphy and sleep diary measures.

COVID-19 has become a long-term problem, and global pandemic conditions may persist for years. Researchers are providing mounting evidence of relationships between COVID-19 lockdowns and sleep problems. However, few studies have investigated the impact of home isolation on sleep time perception, especially in comparable social isolation situations with similar pressures. Subjective sleep time perception parameters were derived from sleep diaries. Objective parameters were derived from actigraphy. Subjective and objective data were obtained between February 17 and February 27, 2020 from 70 adul

Voice-Related Quality of Life in Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis: Effect of Serial Intralesional Steroid Injections.

OBJECTIVES: Serial intralesional steroid injection (SILSI) is an emerging treatment for idiopathic subglottic stenosis (ISGS), providing improvement in both subjective symptoms and objective airflow parameters. Little is known about how this airway remodeling affects the voice. This project analyzes subjective voice changes after SILSI and correlates these with airflow parameters. METHODS: An ISGS database containing voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL) and spirometry (peak expiratory flow percentage [%PEF]) was retrospectively queried. Included were ISGS patients from 2009 to 2019 who had

Time Perception and the Experience of Time When Immersed in an Altered Sensory Environment.

The notion that exposure to a monotonous sensory environment could elicit reports indicating aberrant subjective experience and altered time perception is the impetus for the present report. Research has looked at the influence of exposure to such environments on time perception, reporting that the greater the environmental variation, the shorter is the time estimation obtained by the method of production. Most conditions for creating an altered sensory environment, however, have not facilitated an immersive experience, one that directly impacts both time perception and subjective experience.
