BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback is a self-regulation strategy used to improve conditions including asthma, stress, hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Respiratory muscle function affects hemodynamic influences on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and HRV and HRV-biofeedback protocols often include slow abdominal breathing to achieve physiologically optimal patterns of HRV with power spectral distribution concentrated around the 0.1-Hz frequency and large amplitude. It is likely that optimal balanced breathing patterns and ability to entrain heart rhy

The acute mechanism of toxicity of waterborne nickel (Ni) was investigated in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in moderately hard ( approximately 140 mg l(-1) as CaCO(3)) Lake Ontario water, where the 96-h LC(50) for juvenile trout (1.5-3.5 g) was 15.3 mg (12.7-19.0, 95% C.L.) dissolved Ni l(-1). No marked impact of Ni exposure on average unidirectional or net fluxes of Na(+), Cl(-), or Ca(2+) was observed in juvenile trout exposed for 48-60 h to 15.6 mg Ni l(-1) as NiSO(4). Furthermore, when adult rainbow trout (200-340 g) were fitted with indwelling dorsal aortic catheters and exposed

Objective.Electrical stimulation of the baroreceptors pathways at the carotid sinus bulb-known as baroreflex activation therapy (BAT)-is intended to change autonomic tone and ultimately reduce blood pressure (BP) and heart rate. BAT is pre-market approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of heart failure and received an FDA humanitarian device exemption for drug resistant hypertension. However, responder rates are limited by side-effects including numbness in the head and neck, altered speech, respiratory constriction, dry cough, vomiting, and altered s

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airway inflammation, remodeling, and hyperresponsiveness to triggers that lead to airway constriction and impaired airflow. Bronchial smooth muscle (BSM) plays a central role in these processes by constricting the airways and producing proinflammatory cytokines in response to environmental triggers, allergens, and cytokines. Although current therapies, including bronchodilators, corticosteroids, and biologics, effectively treat many patients, additional strategies are needed for difficult-to-treat asthma. Emerging evidence suggests tha

Biallelic variants in PYROXD1 are associated with a life limiting muscle and connective tissue disorder characterised by generalised muscle weakness, breathing and feeding difficulties, distal laxity, hypernasal speech, blue sclera and osteopenia. PYROXD1 encodes an oxidoreductase implicated in mitochondrial function and tRNA ligase activity. Herein we present the first comprehensive suite of mouse models designed to elucidate PYROXD1 redox functions and the underlying pathogenetic basis for PYROXD1 disorders. A LacZ reporter strain reveals ubiquitous expression of Pyroxd1, particularly in the

Botulinum toxin (BoNT), a neurotoxic protein produced by Clostridium botulinum, is widely used for cosmetic and therapeutic purposes, including managing muscle hyperactivity, movement disorders, and chronic migraines by blocking acetylcholine release at neuromuscular junctions. While generally safe, it can cause localized adverse effects (erythema, ptosis, pain) and rare systemic complications (dysphagia, dysarthria, respiratory distress), particularly with improper dosing. From August 2024, This case report presents three female patients, aged 25, 50, and 49, in the Affiliated Hospital of Yun

The pathophysiology of muscle damage in peripheral artery disease (PAD) includes increased oxidant production and impaired antioxidant defenses. Epicatechin (EPI), a naturally occurring flavanol, has antioxidant properties that may mediate the beneficial effects of natural products such as cocoa. In a phase II randomized trial, a cocoa-flavanol-rich beverage significantly improved walking performance compared with a placebo in people with PAD. In the present work, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effect of cocoa flavanols were investigated by analyzing baseline and follow-up

BACKGROUND: Dominant and recessive autosomal pathogenic variants in the three major genes (COL6A1-A2-A3) encoding the extracellular matrix protein collagen VI underlie a group of myopathies ranging from early-onset severe conditions (Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy) to milder forms maintaining independent ambulation (Bethlem myopathy). Diagnosis is based on the combination of clinical presentation, muscle MRI, muscle biopsy, analysis of collagen VI secretion, and COL6A1-A2-A3 genetic analysis, the interpretation of which can be challenging.
OBJECTIVE: To refine the phenotypical spectrum

In addition to the cholinergic and adrenergic nervous systems, a new noncholinergic and nonadrenergic nervous system has recently been described, involving the afferent sensory nerves in the airways. Many irritants (dusts, chemicals) stimulate these sensory nerves to release neuropeptides. Among these neuropeptides, the "tachykinins" exist in sensory nerves of airways (substance P, neurokinin A). These tachykinins have the ability to affect multiple cells in the airways and to provoke many responses including smooth muscle contraction, mucus secretion, plasma extravasation and neutrophil adhes

Respiratory viral infections cause significant mortality. Pre-existing atopy has demonstrated protection from virus-induced death. Atopic mice with house dust mite (HDM) extract survive normally lethal parainfluenza (Sendai virus, SeV) and influenza A (IAV) infection. Neuregulin-1 (NRG1), markedly elevated in airways of atopic mice, has been shown to significantly attenuate mortality to SeV and IAV in non-atopic mice. Hypothesizing that atopy and NRG1 mediate protection from death through similar mechanisms, we anazlyed single-cell RNA sequencing data from CD45+ (hematopoietic) and CD45- (stru

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron degeneration, leading to muscle weakness and respiratory issues. Enteral nutrition is used in ALS patients when they experience severe weight loss, dysphagia, dehydration, or a risk of aspiration pneumonia. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is essential for managing respiratory failure in ALS patients, especially during feeding tube placement procedures. This narrative review compares percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG), and radiologically in

Juvenile myasthenia gravis (JMG) is a rare autoimmune disease acquired in childhood, comprising 8%-15% of all myasthenia gravis cases depending on geographic and ethnic populations. Ocular myasthenia gravis presents as ptosis with extraocular movement restriction and is frequently misdiagnosed as third nerve palsy or congenital ptosis when bilateral. Early diagnosis prevents disease progression and unnecessary interventions. We report a case of JMG initially misdiagnosed as Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) to highlight diagnostic pitfalls. A 4-year-old girl presented with left eye ptosis, followe

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disease-modifying treatments (DMT) have dramatically changed phenotypes in patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Because publications regarding standards of care were published before DMTs emerged, detailed recommendations and guidelines for physiotherapeutic management are still lacking. The objective of this study was to map the physiotherapeutic management of patients with SMA within the SMArtCARE network, a disease-specific registry for patients with 5q-SMA with 83 participating centers in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
METHODS: An online survey using
