Seventeen pediatric encephalitis (n = 12) or stroke (n = 5) cases clustered temporally during the 2023-2024 Mycoplasma pneumoniae epidemic in South Korea; similar patterns had not been noted in previous seasons. Those findings might reflect postpandemic changes in clinical manifestation and underscore the need for neurologic surveillance during M. pneumoniae epidemics.

We describe a series of severe neuroinvasive infections caused by Toscana virus, identified by real-time reverse transcription PCR testing, in 8 hospitalized patients in Bucharest, Romania, during the summer seasons of 2017 and 2018. Of 8 patients, 5 died. Sequencing showed that the circulating virus belonged to lineage A.

From 2014-2019, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis complicated 7.2% (0-23.1% in different influenza seasons) of cases of influenza-associated respiratory failure in Edmonton, Alberta. Disease outcomes ranged from survival without therapy to death despite antifungals. Clinician vigilance, longitudinal local surveillance, and refined criteria to identify patients requiring therapy are needed.

We analyzed results of recent microbiologic surveillance of meningitis in northern Cameroon. During the 2007 and 2008 meningitis seasons, all 57 identified meningococcal isolates were serogroup W135. This situation might indicate that the area is experiencing a period between epidemic waves due to 2 different clones of serogroup A meningococci.

We conducted a study to determine whether juvenile stray dogs could be sentinels for West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance. Seroconversion was detected 6 weeks before the first reported human case. Our findings provide evidence that dogs could be useful sentinels for monitoring areas for evidence of WNV during transmission seasons.

OBJECTIVE: Asian sand dust (ASD), originating in the deserts of Mongolia and China, spreads over large areas and is associated with adverse effects on human health in East Asia, including asthma, heart disease, and some allergic diseases. However, the effect of ASD on patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis caused by Japanese cedar pollen (SAR-JCP), the most common form of allergic rhinitis, remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ASD on SAR-JCP patients.

BACKGROUND: Japanese cedar (JC) pollen sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT)-tablets (5000 Japanese allergy units [JAU]) are licensed for the treatment of JC-pollinosis with no age restriction on the basis of the results of a 5-year clinical trial. However, there have been no large-scale surveys of 5000 JAU in an actual clinical setting.
METHODS: This was a multicenter observational prospective study. We assessed the safety and effectiveness of the long-term use of 5000 JAU in patients with JC-pollinosis, with an observation period of two seasons of JC pollen dispersal, at clinical sites in Japan.

The daily emergence of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium cercariae was investigated under field conditions. Intermediate host snails of both schistosome species were collected during the rainy season, cold dry season and warm dry season and kept separately in test tubes in habitat water. Shed cercariae were collected from each of the test tubes at two hourly intervals, transferred to Petri dishes and counted.
